Why doesn't England have a National Anthem?

It's frustrating to hear them sing the 'God Save the King' British national anthem. Why doesn't England have its own national anthem instead of singing one which covers all of the union (in theory)?

It does - it’s the same as the United Kingdom’s national anthem.

It’s also the same as Liechtenstein’s national anthem, for all you fact fans out there.

None of the nations have an official anthem apparently:

I didn't know that!

Wales and Scotland have their own anthems. England’s should be either Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory (I think LoH&G should actually be the UK anthem).

Also the old Prussian Imperial Anthem ("Hail Thee in the Victor's Crown").

Mainly because no-one can agree what it should be.

I think each of the home nations should have their own, used when each nation is acting individually; and the British one be used when its more than one or whole of UK

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 14/07/2024 20:04

Well there’s a (now unsung) verse in GSTK about crushing rebellious Scots, so yeah, it’s very English and Scots don’t want it. Unsurprising they adopted their own.

NeedToChangeName · 14/07/2024 20:05

Totally agree OP

England should have their own song

Also the old Prussian Imperial Anthem ("Hail Thee in the Victor's Crown").

And the old Austro Hungarian imperial anthem the 'Gott Erhalte'

AzureAnt · 14/07/2024 20:08

Nah we are fine with God save the King thanks x

PuppyMonkey · 14/07/2024 20:09

They should sing Vindaloo Grin

Or The Archers theme tune.

I remember rugby internationals at the old Murrayfield in the 70s featuring heartfelt singing of their anthem by the Welsh and unanimous booing of GSTQ by both home and visiting supporters.

Peakypolly · 14/07/2024 20:10

I think, despite not liking GStheK, we could use that for British events and individual songs for sports when we play as individual nations. I would choose Land of H&G.

Needmorelego · 14/07/2024 20:11

At least we were singing - unlike that Spanish lot 🤣
(does the Spanish anthem not have words?)

StaringAtTheWater · 14/07/2024 20:11

I totally agree - it's really weird when say, England play Wales in football or rugby, and England sing an anthem which is meant to represent Wales as well.

I admit I might be biased though as I think 'God Save the King' is incredibly dreary.

ClevererThanMost · 14/07/2024 20:11

Just confirmed with my Welsh teenage daughter that she doesn’t know GSTK. I consider that parenting done right.

Luddite26 · 14/07/2024 20:12

I would pick bohemian rhapsody. I think that will come with the Republic! 😄

CrushingOnRubies · 14/07/2024 20:13

At commonwealth games when England get a gold Jerusalem is played. Never understood why especially as when England football and rugby have God Save the King

The Spanish anthem has no words.
(did you not know this? 😂)

Cinocino · 14/07/2024 20:22

Isn’t God Save essentially the English national anthem though? It’s not exactly popular in Scotland, Wales or NI (other than the fanatics no one cares about who think they are more English than the English).

Surely at commonwealth games, the king is the monarch of most of the countries.

Yes it does and my Spanish friends are baffled

Anonymouseposter · 14/07/2024 20:28

Have you actually heard the words of Land Of Hope And Glory. (Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set etc.) Not ideal. Jerusalem might do.

CrushingOnRubies · 14/07/2024 20:28

True but you can also be a republic but be part of the commonwealth

devildeepbluesea · 14/07/2024 20:30

As a Welsh person, trust me - it’s not our anthem! Even in the Limpix or other “UK” comps.

Im with a PP and Billy Connolly the Arxhdrs theme tune is favourite.
