Why doesn't England have a National Anthem?

It's frustrating to hear them sing the 'God Save the King' British national anthem. Why doesn't England have its own national anthem instead of singing one which covers all of the union (in theory)?

It would cause so much trouble to pick an English Anthem, but there are so many awesome ballads to consider.
I've always loved Shirley Bassey belting out Diamonds are Forever, or History Repeating Itself. Of course Dame Shirley is Welsh so possibly not very tactful.
I saw Bananrama live a couple of times they had some marvellous songs that the audience all knew the words to. And those attractive gentlemen from Spandau Ballet have some excellent songs for singing along.
I saw the Weather Girls sing Its raining men at the Fridge in Brixton, that went down well with the crowd. Especially the young men.

Love love these ideas 😂

@Euridicefortuna I'm a firm believer in English votes for English laws

Which non English votes ever dictate English laws??

England's tuition fees

Growing up in Wales GSTQ was never played, used or sung in any situation, it was only this year that I was in a situation where GSTK was played and I realised I'd never actually sung it so wasn't even sure of the words! It's very much an English anthem to my mind.

Or The Archers theme tune.

Hi Billy Connolly 🤣

Let's leave Jerusalem. "And did those feet..?" Well, almost certainly no.

We could sing "There'll always be an England."
Although as Flanders and Swann pointed out, that doesn't say much, because there'll always be an North Pole (if some dangerous fool doesn't melt it)

So they did try and write their own. What about (Edited to say I was watching the football and didn't notice someone had already linked it!)

“Let's leave Jerusalem. "And did those feet..?" Well, almost certainly no.”

Well Blake took Milton advice and I would beg to differ! - although I’m very much against using Parry’s “Jerusalem” as a national anthem

@gotmyknickersinatwist In N.I. they are Northern Irish

Actually a minority of people in NI class themselves as Northern Irish.

When did I suggest a majority identify as Northern Irish?
To quote you 'fanatics no one cares about who think they are more English than the English'. This is hardly based in fact. I don't know any Northern Irish native who thinks of themselves as 'English'.
I'm from & live in N.I.
I know plenty who identify themselves as British. You said English, not British.
As for minorities, percentages etc., the 2021 census is readily available.

NeverEnoughPants · 14/07/2024 22:02

Needmorelego · 14/07/2024 20:11

At least we were singing - unlike that Spanish lot 🤣
(does the Spanish anthem not have words?)

It doesn't have official words.

Probably when you said In NI they are Northern Irish.

I very much enjoy David Bowies many anthem like songs also. Possibly not Space Oddity, Heros is great as is Starman.
I suspect an ABBA song would score very highly in a free vote, Waterloo might satisfy those who enjoy a bit of historical allusion. But Super Trouper is also very rousing.

SisyphusDad · 14/07/2024 22:14

Another vote for Flanders and Swann. "The English, the English, the English are best. I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest!"

How on Earth does that suggest I was referring to a majority? You referred to 'fanatics' identifying as English. I suggested that no, they don't say they're English, they say they're British. No mention of majorities, numbers, percentages etc. Etc. Etc....

If the Scots the Welsh and the Northern Irish wish to leave the Union they should go ahead. I doubt the English would be crying too much about it

You weren't around for the independence referendum then?

I firmly believe the vast majority of English people would happily lance NI like a boil on its bloated arse.

Have you actually heard the words of Land Of Hope And Glory. (Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set etc.) Not ideal. Jerusalem might do.

I thought Jerusalem was an unofficial hymn for women's suffrage? Which is why the WI sing it?

MrsClownland · 14/07/2024 22:27

Well this thread is taking an unpleasant turn

Isn’t God Save essentially the English national anthem though? It’s not exactly popular in Scotland, Wales or NI (other than the fanatics no one cares about who think they are more English than the English).

Its not supposed to be. Its supposed to be the anthem of the UK and the Commonwealth Realms I believe. England is the only country that doesn't have a separate National Anthem just for itself, and has co opted the UK (dreary non national anthem) for itself.

Hatfullofwillow · 14/07/2024 22:30

I thought "Yakaty Sax", the theme from Benny Hill, was England's unofficial anthem.

I'm not sure 'I was sick and tired of everything when I called you last night from Glasgow' hits quite the right sentimentGrin

HairyToity · 14/07/2024 22:34

Would love to see the monarchy abolished and Jerusalem as our national anthem.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 14/07/2024 22:35

LuluBlakey1 · 14/07/2024 20:49

I like 'I Vow To Thee My Country'. It would be a good national anthem for England.

I agree. I think that is a great song. I dont know all the words, but as with GSTK you can get rid of the dodgy bits. The main problem with GSTK for me is that its about saving one person and how we should all try and pray to God to save the King. Nothing to do with the nation, which surely is what a 'National anthem' should be about.

Give it to Scotland if they get Independence. They caused the mess with the plantation of Ulster anyway.

WithACatLikeTread · 14/07/2024 22:45

Surely you would know GSTK if you watch Olympics etc? So Welsh and Scots don't watch the Olympics?
