Why doesn't England have a National Anthem?

It's frustrating to hear them sing the 'God Save the King' British national anthem. Why doesn't England have its own national anthem instead of singing one which covers all of the union (in theory)?

Oh, can I ask a question (as a non-Brit) to all those of you who sing ‘God Save the King’? How long did it take you to remember to sing ‘King’ rather than ‘Queen’, and are some people still forgetting? Every time I’ve seen the England team singing the anthem, I’ve mentally gone ‘Oh, forgot QE2 is no more ’…

It's not half as confusing as trying to remember that the Prince of Wales isn't Chuckles.

There was definitely a period of “God Save the Quing”. Not sure if that’s still the case - I suspect most Britons don’t really sing it very often anyway (can’t actually remember the last time I did)

My dad would have loved you!

Ooh why ???

itwontletmechoose · 14/07/2024 21:04

Yep as a Welsh atheist republican maybe it's not the English singing it that bothers me then, but everything else about it 😬

Just confirmed with my Welsh teenage daughter that she doesn’t know GSTK. I consider that parenting done right.

Amen. DC informed me only the other week that the head teacher got arsey with the kids because not all of them knew all the words to the National Anthem.

As far as I'm concerned DC never has to sing it again.

😀😀 Yes, I was wondering about whether in fact many of you were celebrating the rule of a gracious Quing for a while.

Very much understand it and very much live it.
How anyone can take issue with me saying there are fanatics in NI is beyond me. It wouldn’t have any issues if there weren’t fanatics.

You said this....

Isn’t God Save essentially the English national anthem though? It’s not exactly popular in Scotland, Wales or NI (other than the fanatics no one cares about who think they are more English than the English).

Your post is therefore not clear. I think it insinuates that all who sing GSTK are fanatics???? Is that what you are suggesting ?

I never ever suggested there were no fanatics if you read my posts. Every society has fanatics.

You’ve pretty much got your own parliament?

Mp representing England do not legislate on issues involving the other Countries but they can on issues that affect England only.So no we don't really have our own parliament.

Tubthumping by Chumbawumba should be the anthem tbh.

I imagine it will be just in time for the next king...

But then that's only in my head. I don't think I've sung the words since primary/ever.

England has 80+% of the MPs and absolutely legislates on UK/England and Wales issues. What purpose would having another layer of government be to you? We voted to have our own, via devolution because having only 30 representatives in the HoC meant Wales’ needs weren’t met. England feathers its nest in the current system just fine.

I’m think we are allowed to. We exercise our right not to.

GeminiGiggles · 14/07/2024 21:15

Surely if we win the national anthem will end being "We Are The Champions"

So many great Queen songs being suggested as a national anthem and I love it 🤣

Thatcat · 14/07/2024 21:16

Is it not:
VINDALOOOOOO
NAH NAH
WE’re gonna score one more than you ENGERLUUUUND
ME AND ME MUM AND ME DAD AND ME GRAN […]

etc?

Well, maybe the English should have thought about that when they were trying to obliterate us, our language and our traditions. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I like 'I Vow To Thee My Country'. It would be a good national anthem for England.

This gets my vote too.

LordEmsworth · 14/07/2024 21:19

ROFL at the idea of Jerusalem being a national anthem. "This country's so shit, let's destroy it and start again", hmm yeah that's rousing, but possibly not in a good way 😂

Why is it “sad” that Scotland, Wales and NI have devolved powers in order to deal with their own concerns and political priorities, which are not the same as those in England?

5128gap · 14/07/2024 21:20

There'll always be an England maybe?

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 14/07/2024 21:20

Also the old Prussian Imperial Anthem ("Hail Thee in the Victor's Crown").

Same melody as the old de facto Swiss anthem. Which was in use before Switzerland officially adopted a national anthem (the Swiss psalm, which is still in use today).

Well that’s ironic considering you keep only referring to Britain and not The UK.
