To think Joe Biden needs to be replaced as a candidate

I just saw a headline saying Biden absolutely lost the plot last night and was totally incoherent. Why on earth is he bring put forward as a candidate. I know a lot of folk on here think nothing could be worse than Trump. Or does it not really matter who is President as somebody else makes the big decisions anyway and the President is just a figurehead. I find it a bit scarey that the USA can only come up with those two. Many Democrats are apparently calling for him to be replaced.

Literally just sitting here saying the same thing!

Gingernaut · 28/06/2024 08:03

They both need to be replaced

They are both dire

They are both dire.

But Trump does not raise questions about his stamina, health and cognitive function in his arguments and speech.

The Democrats are handing this to Trump on a plate, they must carry the can for not coming up with a stronger candidate.

cupcaske123 · 28/06/2024 08:08

It makes you wonder what on earth is going wrong in American politics, for those two to be the only options. I personally want Bernie but can only dream.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 28/06/2024 08:10

It's literally unbelievable. Even at his most coherent, Biden is doddery and slow. And his stretched, botoxed face I find more distracting than Trump's orange.

skippy67 · 28/06/2024 08:18

It's crazy to think that Bill Clinton was President 25 years ago, and is still younger than both Trump and Biden!

Biden is already the nominated presidential candidate in a process where delegates from every state votes on their preferred candidate. It is not simple to unseat him - essentially he needs to agree to stand aside.

It is nothing like the UK, where if the ruling political party loses confidence in the PM, they can get rid of them very quickly.

Probably not worth commenting unless you actually watched it... The media generally always has an angle.

I’m glad it’s not just me, I’m finding his face difficult to look at as well, he’s clearly had a lot of work, and it’s now giving him a waxy unnatural look. It doesn’t make him look younger or fresher, he just looks waxy or mummified.

i think it is him who refused to stand down, but what a mess, he is clearly declining fast as some folks sadly do in their 80s.

orange trump looks natural in comparison and in peak health. It’s just mind boggling;

i don't think we're in any position to judge them frankly (well presuming you're in the U.K. too)

As much as sunak and starmer have their issues, as do all politicians, they are a far cry from trump and Biden, cmon.

Really? Which party leader is comparable to alleged multiple rapist Trump?

Turkeyhen · 28/06/2024 08:30

Surely Biden will be under a lot of pressure to stand aside now. Who would replace him? The Democrats need someone young and charismatic to challenge Trump.

The obvious choice seems for Harris to step in but she's very unpopular.

Davros · 28/06/2024 08:33

Radio 4 said a while ago that Biden wanted this debate before a certain deadline is coming up, can't remember what it is called, but he could be replaced

Well facts and history have proved you wrong.

Look how quickly leaders of political parties have been replaced here - even while serving as the Prime Minister! The Tories have changed theirs twice since Johnson led them in the last GE!!

Has any US President ever been ousted and replaced while in office by his own party except via impeachment?

They can't even get rid of a convicted criminal FFS!

Thank Fuck we don't have their system.

Metempsychosis · 28/06/2024 08:39

One big problem is Kamala Harris. Whether it's her own lack of political skill or the White House machine not getting behind her or misogyny/racism or all of the above, she's unpopular and has a low profile. If you're an old-looking eighty year old candidate then your VP really matters.

If she'd achieved popularity and high visibility in her first term then the solution would be obvious.

Misthios · 28/06/2024 08:40

snd he was considered no spring chicken at the time!!

That's just not true. Clinton is the third-youngest ever US President after Theodore Roosevelt and John F Kennedy. He was 46. Younger than Obama.

I really can't see Americans accepting a female POTUS within the next 50 years.

Turkeyhen · 28/06/2024 08:41

Gretchen Whitmer was mentioned as a strong possible on R4

Edited

The clips are fucking terrible though, no angle needed.

Not sure why a pp claimed there are no concerns about Trump’s cognitive abilities, I’ve seen plenty of speculation about the reasons for the drivel he spouts.

OnceICaughtACold · 28/06/2024 08:46

But Trump does not raise questions about his stamina, health and cognitive function in his arguments and speech.

I think he does raise questions about all of this, but he’s always spoken in such a rambling incoherent way that none of it stands out as new. He’s always getting names and dates wrong, or outright lying. The democrats just cannot pin concern about cognitive function on him the way everyone can about Biden.

Violetandgreen · 28/06/2024 08:46

Gavin Newsom is rumoured to be ready to replace Biden. Biden failing last night was fully expected.
