To think Joe Biden needs to be replaced as a candidate

I just saw a headline saying Biden absolutely lost the plot last night and was totally incoherent. Why on earth is he bring put forward as a candidate. I know a lot of folk on here think nothing could be worse than Trump. Or does it not really matter who is President as somebody else makes the big decisions anyway and the President is just a figurehead. I find it a bit scarey that the USA can only come up with those two. Many Democrats are apparently calling for him to be replaced.

Neither party has held its convention yet. Neither man is the formal nominee of his party. Either could choose to release the delegates pledged to him during the primaries.

The American media are full of pleas today for Biden to do this. There are some excellent Democratic governors who could step up as well as the VP and some Cabinet members

Gavin Newsom/Kamala Harris might be a winning ticket. She can’t win the presidency right now but the party needs her. A ticket with 2 women is sadly a nonstarter. GN is the governor of CA, which is something like the 7th or 8th largest economy in the world and is doing pretty well. It is in many ways a microcosm of America. GN has been effective and is charismatic.

We can but wait and see, though not for long

Remember back when Dick Cheney was Vice President and he accidentally shot his friend? Kamala Harris is polling lower among Americans than he did right after the shooting.

From this site, I get the impression that a lot of people in the UK don’t grasp how unpopular Kamala Harris is among - among everybody, really. She dropped out of the Democratic primary in 2016 because she had so few votes and her campaign was running out of money. The left doesn’t approve of many things she did as a prosecutor. The right isn’t happy with her because Biden flat-out said that he wanted a black woman VP long before he picked her. She was picked to be the best black woman for the job, not the best all-around candidate for the job. And she has a history of saying things weirdly or awkwardly and leaving people cringing.

He has a stutter, ffs. Noting more suspect than that!

My nine-year-old has a stutter. She’s more coherent half-asleep than Biden is on a national stage.

Viviennemary · 29/06/2024 18:57

The thought of Biden having to take his place among the world leaders and make decisions that affect us all is terrifying. Bets are he will have to go.

Oh come on, a stutter has nothing to do with how he stares vacantly into the crowd and seems to completely loose his train of thought. His cognitive ability is clearly in decline and it is just cruel and sad that this is happening so publicly. He would not be considered for a senior position in any organisation let alone the leader of the free world.

Yep. He was nothing like this during eight years as Obama’s VP. Had his share of boneheaded remarks, but they were coherent.

Papyrophile · 29/06/2024 21:56

@CanadianJohn . I agree. Not younger than 35 and no older than 60, but allowing an incumbent a second term. So no President could take office for a second term at over 65. I think it is important that Presidential candidates are fit and healthy enough to serve two terms. It is an immensely demanding office, intellectually and also in needing to visit natural disasters; the travel schedule is a nightmare.

Papyrophile · 29/06/2024 22:01

I liked Pete Buttikrieg (Sp?) last election but he was gay, which is unlikely to play well with middle America. They are so not going to go for a male partner to the POTUS. Maybe in the big cities, but definitely not in the areas in between.

User135644 · 30/06/2024 08:25

I'm sorry bit if they can't do better than Biden the party should give up and fold.

Viviennemary · 30/06/2024 08:41

I think his wife must take some of the blame. I saw a press review programme last night and a commentator was saying this. 'His wife encouraged him as if he was a primary schoolchild.' And not President of arguably the most powerful country in the world. I reckon he will be replaced. Its just getting too embarrassing.

Edited

I saw the clip where she did this. I generally think she is terrific but it was indeed reminiscent of a teacher with a young child. Cringe

I used to think Jill Biden was intelligent and dignified. I'm afraid my view of her has taken a massive nosedive in the last couple of days.

Bouledeneige · 30/06/2024 11:41

I agree my opinion of Jill has plummeted too. It's ridiculous to lie to him and cheerlead for him - an indulgence the US cannot afford. Biden is driven by the belief that he is the only man who can defeat Trump, having done it before. But if he loses - which he surely will after that performance - he will blight his not inconsiderable career and track record - when he could be leaving the stage with dignity and respect. Because he would be doing what's right for the nation.

BruFord · 28/06/2024 17:31

@YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME I think much of it is the amount of money that candidates need to run, plus the sheer brutality of American politics today.

Someone in my neighborhood ran for a city council seat and received personal threats. He was also torn to shreds online. He says that he’s never running for anything again and this was just the local council!

Yep, money definitely is the issue. I understand the abuse on line too, as the world seems to be more brutal the more the virtual becomes the norm for communication - it allows appalling behaviour to hide!

Viviennemary · 30/06/2024 14:59

Apparently Biden has retreated to Camp David to think over the campaign. I bet he stands down in the next week or so.

I bet he'll stay. He's been very frail mentally and physically for a while now so clearly someone else/a senior team are really looking after the majority of Presidential affairs and they're happy to keep it going.

Let's see.

They might be but the American people won't and he'll lose the election.

4 more years of Trump because of Democrat nonsense.

ThatLovingTurtle · 30/06/2024 15:33

Maybe they don't care about the American public but care more about not losing their jobs if Biden steps down. It's possible. There's a lot of power at the top of all political parties that some people enjoy.

Anyway if Trump does win, and there's still no absolute guarantee of that, the Dems will work on gaining control of the House and retaining Senate thus limiting Trump. There's more to US politics than who actually sits in the Oval Office.

I agree. If he stays, it will cost the democrats the election.

@cupcaske123

"It's crazy that in a country with a population of 333 million, these two are the best they can come up with."

I would add that in a country of 67 million it's crazy that the best they can offer to be PM is Sunak or Starmer.

I think we are witnessing the slow decline of democracy as a form of government.

What stands out in my mind is the quote by Alexander Tytler in the late 1700s and the Tytler Cycle

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship."

And the dreadful Truss was the best the Tories could come up with. She was worse than Biden and Trump. I don't think that much of Stammer. So am going off the idea of voting Labour though I had made up my mind I was going to a week or two ago.

It's over a month since I started this thread. And things have gone from bad to worse. Every day I expect his withdrawal as a candidate. Surely things are beyond crisis point now. Calling the President of Ukraine President Putin. Can things get any worse. But I do agree sometimes Biden speaks well and lucidly. I think Trump has more or less won whatever they do.

My mum always said Jill Biden loves the limelight and I was like noooo she’s lovely, sadly now I think it’s true.

Viviennemary · 13/07/2024 19:28

I absolutely agree about Jill Biden. She is very attractive and obviously loves being first lady. And she isn't going to give that up without a fight.

I’m still cringing after watching clips from that debate. It’s insane that he’s been allowed to run! Too many people behind the scenes who are rubbing their hands together at being able to run the show under Biden. But surely they realise the damage they’re doing??
You know it’s bad when he was making Trump come across as the serious candidate!

I don't agree at all and think she's getting a very hard time. Biden is very stubborn, has a big ego and has wanted to be president for a very long time. He has a team around him, propping him up, it's naive to think he's unilaterally making decisions. I doubt there's much Jill can do except support him. He's evidently not going to step aside without a fight.

I can see your point on this. And I suppose its all guess work. Biden obviously doesn't want to step down and maybe she thinks it would look pretty bad if she didn't support him in public. Its a mess whatever way you look at it. My bet is he will step down.
