For feeling awful about throwing away this letter?

Just received a letter through the post (addressed to us, not by name - just address) from a Linda. She's a Jehovah's Witness and is wanting to spread the word.
It's handwritten, and postage has been paid so I would imagine she's gone to a lot of time, effort and expense to send all these letters out.
I have zero interest at all in what the letter or enclosed leaflet say, but feel awful at the idea of throwing it away!
Am I being a fanny? Or would you also feel a bit of guilt - like it's akin to spitting at poor old Linda in the street?! 😅

Bin it! They send them to everyone.

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/06/2024 13:34

Bin

MuscariFan · 26/06/2024 13:36

Linda will have sent them to loads of folk. Her choice to waste her time and money. No guilt for binning them here.

EBearhug · 26/06/2024 13:36

Bin.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 26/06/2024 13:36

Yes, you're being a fanny, it's just junk mail.

Needmorelego · 26/06/2024 13:37

This is what they do now instead of knocking on people's door.
Personally I think they'd be better off spending their spare time actually helping people....but if they want to hand write letters to random people then let them.
Very few people will actually read them !!

Dearg · 26/06/2024 13:37

We have had several such letters. Don’t give it headroom ( unless you are genuinely interested in their religion of course).
Linda put a lot of time into writing the letter, but failed to stop by the local council / library to read the council tax register and get your names. So not that personal.

behindthemall · 26/06/2024 13:39

All JW letters are handwritten and posted from my experience. They do it because they have a duty to spread the word of God as they believe it. They’ve fulfilled their duty by sending the letter. I’m sure they’d love it if you joined the church, but aside from that I doubt they care at all what you do with the letter, they only wrote it for their benefit which it had already served.

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/06/2024 13:39

You are a massive Fanny. I've had several of these and they go straight into the recycling! It's no different to any other unsolicited mail!

PurpleChrayn · 26/06/2024 13:39

If she's include a telephone number just message her to say you're not interested. I'm Jewish and this is what I do.

PurpleChrayn · 26/06/2024 13:40

I mean, asking them to stop is what I do! Not write letters to people

WingSluts · 26/06/2024 13:55

You're supposed to feel guilty. It's a manipulation tactic to get the time of day from you then try and sucker you in.

SerendipityJane · 26/06/2024 14:05

Shame they couldn't donate the cost of paper and postage to a charity. I guess their God isn't really into helping people.

fieldsofbutterflies · 26/06/2024 14:06

Why would you feel awful?

Needmorelego · 26/06/2024 14:11

@SerendipityJane I get really annoyed when I see the ones on the street with their leaflet stands stood barely a metre away from a homeless person.
Helping people would be a better use of their Christianity - rather than trying to recruit to their church.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/06/2024 14:13

I get lots of these (I must look as though I'm in need of 'saving') and I always think 'ooh, nice, a handwritten letter' and then have that sinking sensation when I open it.

As a PP said, the sender feels they have done their duty by God in writing and sending these letters, so you don't need to feel any guilt in throwing it away.

Testina · 26/06/2024 14:16

You sound a bit naïve.

You know that Linda has a printer at home, and a laptop, right? And that Linda’s church has a photocopier? And that they all know about mailmerges?

They also know about… marketing.

This isn’t Linda’s lovely idea that she woke up to. This is a suggestion by her church that she hand writes for engagement.

If anything, see that manipulation for what it is - and have extra reason to chuck it on the recycling pile 🤷🏻‍♀️

Who gives a toss!

saveforthat · 26/06/2024 14:29

I had one a few years ago and I'm pretty sure it was from Linda. Perhaps they all use the same name.

Honestly, just like the manipulative marketing of handwritten letters, I would full expect that there’s a check of the electoral roll, so if you’re 55 with a white-sounding name in a generally white area, yours comes from “Linda”.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/06/2024 14:35

If hell exists there's a special place in it for JWs such as the one who messaged me through Facebook especially to tell me that my late DP was punished by God via cancer because of his Gothic style. And went on to basically tell me that unless I welcomed Jesus into my life I would lose everything and die alone.

I am a very live and let live tolerant person as a rule. However. Even I have my limits.

CloudywMeatballs · 26/06/2024 14:36

Are you serious? You shouldn't feel under any obligation to respond to anything sent unsolicited to you (except, of course, official things things like jury summons). I can't believe you're giving this any headspace.

You're being very unreasonable about considering whether to throw it in the bin. Obviously you put it in the recycling.

Beeinalily · 26/06/2024 14:43

I remember a thread here about someone's DH who had received one of these. If I remember correctly it was a little difficult to make out, and he was really worried about it. Stick it in the recycling.

TippedOverTheGravyJug · 26/06/2024 14:47

I had one of these last month. Binned it. Couldn't give 2 shits how long it took them to be honest.
