For feeling awful about throwing away this letter?

Just received a letter through the post (addressed to us, not by name - just address) from a Linda. She's a Jehovah's Witness and is wanting to spread the word.
It's handwritten, and postage has been paid so I would imagine she's gone to a lot of time, effort and expense to send all these letters out.
I have zero interest at all in what the letter or enclosed leaflet say, but feel awful at the idea of throwing it away!
Am I being a fanny? Or would you also feel a bit of guilt - like it's akin to spitting at poor old Linda in the street?! 😅

Straight in the bin here. We had a spate of loads of them, haven't had one for a while now.

C1N1C · 26/06/2024 15:06

If all it takes is a hand-written letter to convince you, I have a nice used car if you're interested ;)

@SerendipityJane I get really annoyed when I see the ones on the street with their leaflet stands stood barely a metre away from a homeless person.
Helping people would be a better use of their Christianity - rather than trying to recruit to their church.

Jehovah Witnesses are not Christian. They may use the same terminology but their beliefs are very different.

Pleasetakeaseat · 26/06/2024 15:10

LOL we've had a few of these

Hold it up to the light, is it actually hand written letter, or a scanned copy of a handwritten letter? Mine turned out to be a copy, I felt slightly scammed 😂

Another vote for bin!

ginasevern · 26/06/2024 15:11

You sound as bad as me OP. I get a bit silly about things like that. Are you a Pisces by any chance?

Anyway, bin it and don't look back. As others have said, they send them to everyone and anyone.

Needmorelego · 26/06/2024 15:12

@HauntedCosmos I didn't realise that. I thought they were a variation of Christianity.
Even so - I'm sure God would be more impressed if they did some more helpful contributions to society 😂

MartyFunkhouser · 26/06/2024 15:12

I wouldn’t feel guilty, I’d feel really cross that religious claptrap was being sent to me in this way.

Slugsandsnailsresidehere · 26/06/2024 15:12

If its not JWs it's the bloody Lib Dems here - both have taken to sending "handwritten" letters to make you think its personal and not a mail merge 🙄

CocoapuffPuff · 26/06/2024 15:13

Why on earth would you feel guilty. It's spam!! Chuck it out and let Linda bask in her artificial pious glow that she's done her duty and spread the word to one of the many sinful bins in the world.

paasll · 26/06/2024 15:13

Linda has done this because the religion requires it of her.

Bin it and think no more of it.

CurlewKate · 26/06/2024 15:13

Why "fanny"?

OperationGoldDawn · 26/06/2024 15:15

id put it in a scrap book @aperolspritzbasicbitch

downwithmaterialistdogma · 26/06/2024 15:15

JWs go through the recently deceased pages and target people who're bereaved hoping to catch one or two. They also practice shunning and cut people off from their families. They're utter parasites and it's nothing more than a stupid cult. I pity anyone who is involved with them.

They believe they have to earn their salvation by putting in so many hours per week writing letters, knocking on doors or standing in the street handing out literature.
In contrast, Christians believe that they can't earn their salvation as it is a free gift from God. There are many other theological differences too.

downwithmaterialistdogma · 26/06/2024 15:18

They're not Christians.

SmallBox · 26/06/2024 15:19

I've had those but they went to the effort of looking at the electoral roll and using our names. They are a deranged doomsday cult. Bin it.

Testina · 26/06/2024 14:16

You sound a bit naïve.

You know that Linda has a printer at home, and a laptop, right? And that Linda’s church has a photocopier? And that they all know about mailmerges?

They also know about… marketing.

This isn’t Linda’s lovely idea that she woke up to. This is a suggestion by her church that she hand writes for engagement.

If anything, see that manipulation for what it is - and have extra reason to chuck it on the recycling pile 🤷🏻‍♀️

They're handwritten not printed.

OrlandointheWilderness · 26/06/2024 15:28

Yes @Blouson I think that was the point the PP was trying to make... they have access to printers and computers, but choose to handwrite for manipulation and marketing.

My bad!

OrlandointheWilderness · 26/06/2024 15:33

No worries!

SeasickAccountant · 26/06/2024 15:34

What's the alternative to binning it?

Round here someone religious leaves cards in the cubicles of ladies toilets, addressed as 'A little something for you' or something like that. The first time I found one, I chased the lady who'd just left the cubicle, thinking it was hers & she'd left it behind! As she hadn't, & the envelope wasn't stuck down, we had a look & found religious stuff written inside.

I can't think it's likely to help anyone. But it's better than the obsessed, stalkery messages that used to be left on one church noticeboard locally. Or the porn I found on the library shelf! I found a librarian & said, "This is going to sound weird, but I just found some porn between the books over there." She rolled her eyes & said, "Not again!".😁

ifIwerenotanandroid · 26/06/2024 15:40

I mean, someone unattached to the church was leaving the stalkery messages.

All the meanies on here. I think you should frame and treasure it, after all the trouble Linda has gone to, writing you a personal letter. Get a lovely God frame for it and put it high above, on the living room wall 😇
