For feeling awful about throwing away this letter?

Just received a letter through the post (addressed to us, not by name - just address) from a Linda. She's a Jehovah's Witness and is wanting to spread the word.
It's handwritten, and postage has been paid so I would imagine she's gone to a lot of time, effort and expense to send all these letters out.
I have zero interest at all in what the letter or enclosed leaflet say, but feel awful at the idea of throwing it away!
Am I being a fanny? Or would you also feel a bit of guilt - like it's akin to spitting at poor old Linda in the street?! 😅

We have had several such letters. Don’t give it headroom ( unless you are genuinely interested in their religion of course).
Linda put a lot of time into writing the letter, but failed to stop by the local council / library to read the council tax register and get your names. So not that personal.

You can get peoples names and address from a council tax register? Where would I find it?

They say they’re Christian but they don’t believe in the Holy Trinity.

Not quite sue what that has to do with anything ? Don't confuse religion with divinity. It never ends well.

If all it takes is a hand-written letter to convince you, I have a nice used car if you're interested ;)

That has really made me laugh!!!

Hiddendoor · 26/06/2024 16:52

Bin it. Although I wish I had kept one such letter as it was written in a card that had a drawing of Jesus on the front. Jesus looked like Chris Evans (Captain America, not TFI friday). Wonderful.

The contents of the letter were utter bilge though.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 26/06/2024 16:53

They might be interested in recruiting you but they’re sure as fuck not interested in any sort of Christian behaviour.

Years ago I was in the throes of being made redundant and I was waiting for news. I was very upset and was crying when there was a knock at the door. The two JWs on my doorstep could not give a shit that I was tear stained and snotty, they just banged on about God. How very Christian of them.

So they can fuck right off and I’d cheerfully bin a letter from them. In fact, I’d even more cheerfully send it back wrapped round something that would incur a hefty delivery charge. Like a paving slab.

Prawncow · 26/06/2024 16:54

Someone was saying they’re Christians. Nearly every Christian group accepts the Holy Trinity. The JW are one of the few that don’t. Mormons and Christian Scientists also reject the Holy Trinity. I’m not saying it’s a giant, flaming red flag but …

SapphireSeptember · 26/06/2024 16:59

@OldTinHat That's some evil genius right there! ✨🪩

@HighOnMaiden Daft question, but is your username a reference to Iron Maiden?

@Prawncow I had to look that up, because I've never heard of that. They don't believe in the Holy Spirit at all. My church doesn't believe in the Holy Trinity either, but that God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are three distinct and separate entities.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/06/2024 17:00

I wouldn’t feel in the least bad for binning it. To me, JWs are a PITA, repeatedly coming to the door when I’ve politely enough asked them not to because I’m not, and never will be interested.

PoppyCherryDog · 26/06/2024 17:00

We had a hand written one the other day. Went straight in the bin and didn’t give it a seconds thought.

HauntedCosmos · 26/06/2024 17:01

Rubyupbeat · 26/06/2024 16:32

@HauntedCosmos
Of course they are Christians, they follow the word of Christ and Jehovah (God) probably more Christian than a lot of the big churches, as they practice what they preach.
No, I am not a Jehovah's Witness, I am a Christian though and know the bible very well.

With all due respect I suggest you reread the Bible and the writings of the Jehovah Witnesses and compare. They are not Christian. Here is a useful video from a Pastor explaining the crucial differences.

FWIW, I too am a Christian and know my Bible very well.

@HighOnMaiden Nice! ❤️🤟🏻

HobbitDreader · 26/06/2024 17:07

This guilt route, the one you're facing, seems much more effective for getting attention than the old "foot in the door" technique they used to use. I suspect that's why they've changed strategies.

DiscoBeat · 26/06/2024 17:07

That's the whole point. Don't feel sorry for them, they're loonies.

Imtiredthisyear · 26/06/2024 17:11

Testina · 26/06/2024 14:16

You sound a bit naïve.

You know that Linda has a printer at home, and a laptop, right? And that Linda’s church has a photocopier? And that they all know about mailmerges?

They also know about… marketing.

This isn’t Linda’s lovely idea that she woke up to. This is a suggestion by her church that she hand writes for engagement.

If anything, see that manipulation for what it is - and have extra reason to chuck it on the recycling pile 🤷🏻‍♀️

They genuinely do hand write each letter, honestly lots of them are just quite genuinely trying to help.

Imtiredthisyear · 26/06/2024 17:16

Devilsmommy · 26/06/2024 15:50

😳 what the fuck?! Did you give them a big fuck you message, I would have. Sorry about your DH

I don’t think that was a Jehovah’s Witness, they don’t believe god acts in that way. I’m not one but I think there is allot of misinformation about them out there.

If they were a Jehovah’s Witness they have gone rouge, that’s awful.

Alittlefrustrated · 26/06/2024 17:19

My cousin married a JW and that started years of unhappiness for my lovely shunned auntie.

TheChosenTwo · 26/06/2024 17:24

It’s unsolicited junk mail, it wouldn’t even register in my brain to feel for Linda.
She’s done it for her own gain, not for your benefit.
Glad you’ve binned it.

Teddybearpicniccelebration · 26/06/2024 17:24

ginasevern · 26/06/2024 15:11

You sound as bad as me OP. I get a bit silly about things like that. Are you a Pisces by any chance?

Anyway, bin it and don't look back. As others have said, they send them to everyone and anyone.

I have 3 children who are piscean one boy and two girls. My daughter's are older so I can't talk about my son yet. My daughter's who are 18 and 20 over think things is this a trait for pisces?

PeachBlossom1234 · 26/06/2024 17:28

They started doing them during COVID when they couldn’t bang on your door. Just bin it.

listsandbudgets · 26/06/2024 17:33

I always feel a teeny tiny bit guilty about binning them only because I am quite impressed with the effort JWs in general put into trying to recruit people to their religion.. I mean they must spend hours evert week writing letters, knocking doors, hanging about the streets and that's on top of all their religious stuff plus presumably jobs and bringing up the next generations of JWs. No wonder they find no time to vote or celebrate birthdays!

I still bin them though.. sorry Linda

These efforts are absolutely required of them. I have a JW relative.

MILTOBE · 26/06/2024 17:47

The thing is that Linda has to bear witness to her faith every day. She's done that. It doesn't mean you have to pay any attention to it. Shred it with kindness.

I couldn't agree more. Years ago my friend's mum was recruited by these people; my friend had a serious bowel condition and needed a blood transfusion; her mum wasn't going to give permission for it. She did in the end, but what kind of religion makes up these batshit rules?! They prey on elderly, vulnerable people who are lonely. They make me sick.

EBearhug · 26/06/2024 18:17

I'm pretty sure the one I get was really handwritten, because I thought they should have used thicker paper if they were going to press the pen so hard into the paper, it made indentations on the other side, making that harder to read. But I did like the pictures of bees they'd added and coloured in. And I found out where the local Kingdom Hall is (a bit of town I never go to , which remains unchanged.)

Still binned it, pretty bees and all.
