Found out I didn’t get the job from social media

There was an internal job going in work and various people applied.

On Friday I noticed I had a missed call from my manager from the day before at 5.30, I had logged off just before 5 so didn’t see the call. Then due to various meetings and work I had to do it just slipped my mind to call him back.

i went onto Facebook after I finished work on Friday and seen a post that my colleague had been given the job and realised that was why my manager had called me.

AIBU to be annoyed to have found out from Facebook or was it my own fault for not calling my manager back?

he said he left me a voicemail but I didnt get the notification for the voicemail and no further attempt was made to try and contact me on the Friday.

Your own fault for nit prioritising calling your manager back. Commiserations on not getting the job though better luck next time.

This. Unfortunately you shit the bed here. But there's always next time.

sweetpickle2 · 24/06/2024 17:20

Was the post by the company or by your colleague celebrating getting the job?

Either way, I don't see what else your company could have done really- your manage tried to get in touch with you.

OnceICaughtACold · 24/06/2024 17:21

Was the Facebook post an official one by the company or an “I got the job” post from your colleague?

If the former, I think your manager should have made sure that you were informed first. I’d expect a formal email, the phone call accompanying it would be nice but not a necessity. If the latter, honestly I still think your manager was remiss in not emailing you, but it’s less of an issue.

whatfornow · 24/06/2024 17:21

i was back to back in meetings most of Friday morning and then had other work to do so just didn’t get a chance and then it slipped my mind, we were supposed to find out 2 weeks ago and I have spoken to various times since then so just didn’t think

Your fault. And does it really matter? You didn't get the job why should the news be embargoed?

whatfornow · 24/06/2024 17:21

The post was on my colleagues Facebook

Do you normally log off before 5?

How is it your managers fault that it slipped your mind? I'd get over it sharpish and look for a job elsewhere

Not your work place's problem then

whatfornow · 24/06/2024 17:23

I got the email today.

i just think I should have been informed first even by email if they couldn’t get hold of me, what would they have done if I was off on leave?

as a side note, i actually didn’t want the job, was just talked into it so not that bothered about that just think it was quite unprofessional to find out on SM

Ultimately, they can’t ask people not to post their good news on their personal Facebook page.

Yes usually most people are finished before 5

You don't seem not bothered

Lostworlds · 24/06/2024 17:27

They usually speak to the person who they are offering the job to first. That way if they decline it then the company can go back and perhaps choose another interviewee.
It’s not your managers fault that the person who go the job posted on social media, rubbish way to find out but they did try to contact you.

Edited

@Lostworlds Agree with this

Itisjustmyopinion · 24/06/2024 17:30

The SM thing has nothing to do with professionalism. You can’t expect the person to not put something on their personal SM

You had plenty of time to be notified before you saw that but you were busy and didn’t bother phoning your manager back. How was anyone supposed to know when it was ok to make a post

Everleigh13 · 24/06/2024 17:31

So you didn’t want the job anyway and your manager did try to contact you? Just let it go. Why waste your time being bothered about it?

SaltyGod · 24/06/2024 17:31

Your manager called and you didn’t call back / pop them a quick message to see what they wanted?

I find this very surprising, I’d always prioritise calling back my manager or at least ‘I’m so sorry, I’m in back to back meetings all day so I can’t call you back immediately. Is there anything that I can help with?’

Not your manager’s fault

AmelieTaylor · 24/06/2024 17:32

@whatfornow

well if you didn't want the job, I'm glad you didn't get it!! At least she seems happy about it!

Yes your manager should have emailed you Friday, but it sounds like you wouldn't have read it anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

Allie47 · 24/06/2024 17:35

Actually I think it's really poor form to not make sure all internal candidates were told first. The manager could have waited the weekend, they could have told the successful candidate but asked they keep it quiet a few days. I recruit a lot and wouldn't do this to someone.

sweetpickle2 · 24/06/2024 17:36

I agree the company probably shouldn't go shouting about it until they've spoken to everyone, but if it's someone's personal FB then nothing you or the company can do about it.

You don't even want the job anyway! Talk about moaning about nothing.

What do you mean they should have informed you first?
That’s not how it works.
The successful candidate is contacted first. If they accept the job offer, then the unsuccessful candidates are contacted.

Your employer did nothing wrong.

Saschka · 24/06/2024 17:39

what would they have done if I was off on leave?

Still called you. You don’t expect hiring managers not to move forward with recruitment because an unsuccessful candidate has gone on holiday for two weeks and isn’t answering their phone? Confused

whatfornow · 24/06/2024 17:40

So just for context my manager usually quite hard to get hold of, never responds to emails or messages, you constantly have to chase him for stuff.

but I take the point, I’ve maybe listened too much to other people saying how terrible it is 🙄
