Cat Deeley making fun of epilepsy

AIBU in thinking that any tv presenter who ridicules people with serious health conditions should not be in post? This is what I think about Cat Deeley ridiculing people with epilepsy during This morning yesterday. People like this should not be tv presenters because of their intolerance and making fun of children and adults with epilepsy. AIBU?

Wonder how long it will take before Godwin’s Law is enforced here..

TiredSlug · 18/06/2024 22:23

I don’t condone her “joke” and I think the apology could have been better but I think most
of us have been guilty of making jokes or comments that could hurt others. I don’t think it’s as catastrophic as some are acting.

HappyAndJolly · 18/06/2024 22:23

Pinkbits · 18/06/2024 19:27

Its the sort of comment that nobody would have thought twice about a couple of years ago.

You might not have, but I would have.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 18/06/2024 22:23

Shame!

Cat Deeley making fun of epilepsy
Teddleshon · 18/06/2024 22:23

She’s apologised - what else do you want?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 18/06/2024 22:24

The internet doesn’t allow for redemption. It’s the religion with zero ability to repent.

Justcallmebebes · 18/06/2024 22:24

Ridiculous to get worked up about this. She was not mocking people with epilepsy, she was mocking herself. I wish the fun police would have a day off every now and again

It’s scary. Don’t forget - it eventually comes for you.

masomenos · 18/06/2024 22:27

I have epilepsy. My seizures look nothing like what she did. She wasn’t ridiculing me at all - frankly, I wouldn’t mind if I did look like that during a seizure!! It’d be better than passing out and pissing myself 🙄

Some people really do have a terrible time with epilepsy, especially when it’s on top of other problems. Cat Deeley OBVIOUSLY wasn’t targeting that segment of epileptics. You really have to be looking for offence to find it there.

Dita73 · 18/06/2024 22:27

🙄

thisfilmisboring123 · 18/06/2024 22:28

Argh! Ffs!

Do people never tire of looking for offence in everything!!

When did she mention anything about epilepsy?!

Was it funny? No, I didn’t think so but there was no laughing at or belittling people who have seizures.

Have a fucking day off.

AstonMartha · 18/06/2024 22:30

Let’s take down another sleb! Go girl! Hopefully this is it, career over. She apologised but still, it’s not ok for her to be a human and make a misjudged comment.

(obviously I don’t mean any of this)

HappyAndJolly · 18/06/2024 22:20

I’m fuming about this. I’ve got epilepsy and found it extremely hurtful. I’ve been called a freak before and laughed at by bystanders when I’ve been coming round from a seizure. To use language like that is legitimatising it and she shouldn’t have done it.

BTW, I won’t be changing my mind on this.

Agree - not saying she should be sacked etc but that the entire concept of 'oh it's OK to laugh at epilepsy' should be re-addressed

ADHDspoonie · 18/06/2024 22:40

Have epilepsy, have read about it as I don't watch the show.

It was a joke. Life is taken too seriously these days. Can't be arsed getting offended about something that was clearly self deprecating and not meant to offend anyone except herself tbh.

ShinyGreenAngled · 18/06/2024 22:46

It’s not even an unacceptable remark. It’s an everyday remark that anyone might say, that I would never find offensive.

NoNameNonsense · 18/06/2024 22:48

NuffSaidSam · 18/06/2024 19:01

I think she was just a bit insensitive with her choice of language rather than setting out to 'make fun of epilepsy'.

She made a mistake. Has been called out. Has apologised.

Why do you want more than that?

Totally agree. She didn’t do it maliciously. It was just a stupid comment which came across as very insensitive.

The world we live in now is so woke.. this horrific cancel culture. Honestly I despair. It’s a non issue.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 18/06/2024 23:06

Yes you ABVVVU

As nearly everyone else has said, this was a misjudged remark about herself. Chill.

Apart from she didn’t say that did she?

Panicking23 · 18/06/2024 23:10

Just epilepsy? Not brain tumours, high temperatures, cs fluid build up or any of the other many, many causes of seizures?

YABU. Although I suspect you have reason to be over sensitive, which I'm sorry if you do. Dealing with serious illness is never easy.

Berlinlover · 18/06/2024 23:24

Ridiculous thread title, that’s not what happened.

OriginalUsername2 · 18/06/2024 23:32

Errors · 18/06/2024 19:18

It’s everywhere. Even in MN threads that are full of holes because everything anyone says is breaking the talk guidelines
<waits for this post to be deleted>

It’s quite scary when you say it like that 😮

yumyumyumy · 19/06/2024 01:16

She apologised, get the stick out of your bum.

WalkingonWheels · 19/06/2024 02:46

Pinkbits · 18/06/2024 19:27

Its the sort of comment that nobody would have thought twice about a couple of years ago.

When I was a child, I remember everyone saying the phrase, "Having an eppy" for describing someone who was overreacting to something, or a teacher shouting etc.
Not sure if this was a regional thing, but my epileptic brother was one of the worst for saying it!

I can't get worked up about what Cat said.

When will everyone stop taking life so seriously

Omg check your privilege please some of us HAVE to take life seriously in fact hand the mic over to those that do and stop taking up space, use your platform for good and decolonise your mind. You should be defunded and cancelled immediately so tone deaf

/sarcasm

LionBarPlease · 19/06/2024 03:10

The great news is she apologised. The other good thing is that people who might not have thought about the same thing also had it drawn to their attention and so wouldn’t do the same thing. Other people saw her make a graceful apology so might learn from that too. Great outcome all round! Unless you wanted her flogged publicly?
