Cat Deeley making fun of epilepsy

AIBU in thinking that any tv presenter who ridicules people with serious health conditions should not be in post? This is what I think about Cat Deeley ridiculing people with epilepsy during This morning yesterday. People like this should not be tv presenters because of their intolerance and making fun of children and adults with epilepsy. AIBU?

Dp has epilepsy and the he'd find her comments funny... he often jokes about how he could win a breakdancing competition whilst having a seizure.

Are you one of the professionally offended? Do you suffer from epilepsy or are you just choosing to be offended on behalf of other people?

The comment was poorly thought out but might actually end up bringing attention to the disease and hopefully This Morning will do a slot on it to increase understanding further.

When deciding whether to be offended by someone the first thing I do is look to see if the person intends to cause offense. If they don't then a little education is always the best answer.

LittleMonks11 · 18/06/2024 19:55

Oh get away with yourself - and take your pearls with you.

Bunnybear42 · 18/06/2024 19:58

A bad insensitive joke that is all !! The world has gone mad!!! OP get a grip!
I hear comments about people joking they must be deaf when they don't hear something/ it doesn't offend me and my daughter is deaf. I know they are not being rude about the deaf community. It's all about the context . We need to stop the madness... t

I thought her apology was badly worded. She said "I made a light hearted comment". She should have said it was "intended" to be lighthearted. Sounded like she was belittling the people who complained and making it clear she was apologising under duress.

If you can't control your gob don't work in live tv for a huge salary.

This. I thought I was the only one who thought her apology was badly worded and very forced!

My daughter and partner have epilepsy, whilst no one is responsible for our own personal triggers, I didn't think it was right to say. However, I don't think she should be cancelled.

XenoBitch · 18/06/2024 20:21

FFS, she made fun of her own dancing, not people with epilepsy.

She didn't even mention epilepsy. Seizures happen for several reasons, with some being nothing to do with epilepsy. They are a symptom, not an illness.

Springchickenonion · 18/06/2024 20:34

You don't need to be offended by everything.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 18/06/2024 20:41

Not a fan of hers but she made a silly joke and has apologised. Move on

Frenzi · 18/06/2024 21:43

Why do we have to be so uptight and offended by everything nowadays. Its getting ridiculous.

And yes - I do have a daughter with epilepsy who has frequent seizures and no - I am not the slightest bit offended if someone makes a comment about looking like she has a seziure when she dances. Why on earth would I be!!!

Littleguggi · 18/06/2024 21:47

I saw this live and thought I misheard so hit the rewind button and was actually shocked 😮

MooonDreamer · 18/06/2024 21:49

Get a grip OP

Eeeden · 18/06/2024 21:55

Oh wise up. They were ill chosen words. She wasn't making fun of people with epilepsy.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 18/06/2024 21:59

ClaustrophobicKipper · 18/06/2024 19:02

She was dancing and said her dancing made her look like she was "having a seizure"

I personally dont see the harm, and i miss the days where you could joke and be silly freely

Same. I have a condition not too dissimilar which is often the subject of jokes and I couldn’t give a shit. Why are people so sensitive.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 18/06/2024 22:09

Don't be ridiculous. She did not mention epilepsy, adults or children and was not making fun of anyone other than herself.

Branleuse · 18/06/2024 22:15

Cat Deeley clearly just hates disabled people. Outrageous

BobLemon · 18/06/2024 22:17

Good job the OP hasn’t heard the joke about the two nuns and the flasher.

LordSnot · 18/06/2024 22:17

Burn the witch!

Knitgoodwoman · 18/06/2024 22:19

We’ve all said silly things we regretted. cancel culture needs to stop.

Noseybookworm · 18/06/2024 22:20

It was an ill-judged light hearted comment about her own dancing, she was definitely not mocking people with epilepsy. It's live tv - these things happen. Who out of us hasn't put their foot in their mouth on occasion. She's rightly apologised and I think that should be enough.

Codlingmoths · 18/06/2024 22:20

gamerchick · 18/06/2024 19:09

Is this what we do now. People make a small fuck up, apologise for it and get their lives ruined anyway?

Goes to show how quick people can turn on you and bay for blood.

This. Cancel culture is voting wholeheartedly for the leopards eating faces party.

HappyAndJolly · 18/06/2024 22:20

I’m fuming about this. I’ve got epilepsy and found it extremely hurtful. I’ve been called a freak before and laughed at by bystanders when I’ve been coming round from a seizure. To use language like that is legitimatising it and she shouldn’t have done it.

BTW, I won’t be changing my mind on this.

Flyrightby · 18/06/2024 22:21

Yes, you're being unreasonable.

I often think AIBU should be Am I Being Ridiculous.

Sallyh87 · 18/06/2024 22:22

Seizures are not specific to epilepsy, for instance as a diabetic I have had seizures. People need to get over themselves, it was a clumsy and ill thought joke.

Scruffily · 18/06/2024 22:22

Saying that you danced like you were having a seizure does not equate to saying that danced like you had epilepsy, given that people can have seizures for a number of reasons. The "joke" was clearly intended to be at her own expense, not anyone else. She's apologised, that's enough in this case.
