Leaving pegs on washing line?

ThisQuirkyPeachHare · 03/06/2024 12:03

I've always left my pegs on the washing line... All year round.
I saw a peg bag in the shop and now I'm wondering... Should I bring my pegs in each day with the washing? AIBU to leave them out all the time?🤣
Do you bring yours in? Why? 🤷‍♀️🤣

I now always bring my pegs in, many years ago I left them out when I first got my own home and as they were the wooden type you could see where they left dirty looking stain marks on the light coloured clothes.

Still use the wooden type but always put in the peg tub, have a fold down line now so also fold and put the cover on that too, helps keep the dirt/bugs off.

When I had a long washing line I'd always wet a peice of kitchen roll and run it over the length of the line a few times, it's surprising how dirty the line was.

PissA · 03/06/2024 13:56

I get them in because I have a retractable washing line.

But mainly because my mum drilled into me from an early age that leaving pegs out was a sign of being lazy, common as muck, slovenly, and lacking any kind of self-respect or housework standards.

My mum had/has * OPINIONS* about pegs.

TimeZonePlantPot · 03/06/2024 13:58

Spiders set up inside the springs. Nope.

Aramiss · 03/06/2024 14:00

I bring them in most of the time. I bought a cheap bum bag and keep them in there. Very handy.

If I leave them out, spiders start setting up camp and the plastic goes brittle. So many have broken from being left out.

They get 'darked' on
Spiders will rub their willies all over them
Looks untidy
Go rusty

And the best one of all (tongue in cheek from mil): "well, she's no better than she ought to be" <sniff> (Her opinion of a woman who leaves pegs on the line...not sure if similar opinion if her son, my DH were to leave them out...)
🤣
I put mine in a peg basket and bring them indoors.

What's "darked on"??? Is this going to make me bring my pegs in?? 😅

Also, I've never considered that spiders have willies??? Do they???... Never mind them rubbing them on my washing!

I have a peg bag on my line but pegs are still on the line 🫣🤣

Ariela · 03/06/2024 14:34

I bring in. I enjoy making new peg bags from nice scraps of fabric.

Invent · 03/06/2024 14:35

My mum was the same about taking pegs off so I have embraced the act of rebellion.
Considering most of the time I can't be arsed with the basket and just carry carry out the washing, finding a peg bag is way too much effort.

I learnt both things from MN.

People leaving their washing out over night (summer months) were told that they can't do that because the clothes would be 'darked' on (spooky night-time air?) And according to Google, spiders don't have willies 🤣, they have appendages called pedipalps.

DappledThings · 03/06/2024 14:56

Surely they get in the way when you're trying to get the washing back out. You must have to move them around and take then on and off to hang a load out anyway so it would annoy me to do that rather than start with a clean line and a bag of pegs.

mynewusername2023 · 03/06/2024 14:57

I have a retractable line so have to bring them in. But I would anyway as they would get dirty being outside all the time.

I leave mine out. I can't believe I've lost 1 minute of my life writing this 😂.

J2os · 03/06/2024 15:04

I bring mine in. Hadn't realised that leaving them out was viewed negatively until my mum saw a couple of pegs on my line and ran out in the pouring rain to get them. According to her it’s basically like painting I AM A SKANK on your house 😭

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 03/06/2024 15:07

Peak drying season, I leave the pegs on the line and they don't rust, but the plastic can become brittle after a few years. Depends on the pegs really.

PraiseTheSunshine · 03/06/2024 15:07

I've always left mine outside but they don't last very well if you do. I got a retractable washing line recently and bought a peg bag so I could put the washing line away when it wasn't in use and the pegs do seem to be cleaner and breaking less often.

K0OLA1D · 03/06/2024 15:09

My plastic ones go all brittle if they're left out. Wooden ones go all manky.

I use an old popcorn bucket!

WittyMcAdder · 03/06/2024 15:10

We have a wallmounted collapsable line, so the pegs come in every time.

stayathomer · 03/06/2024 15:11

I leave mine out, have never gotten rusty but then I use plastic ones

Uhohsummoned · 03/06/2024 15:11

Bring In always

Have you not been on MN long? We are experts in spider willies and things being darked on.

Somerandomgirl · 03/06/2024 15:16

I leave mine out..and whole winter they're out even tho u know washing never goes out..and then by summer theyre ruined and time to buy new..who has time to collect pegs 😂

TheTartfulLodger · 03/06/2024 15:21

Mine go in a bag. I take them out when I hang the washing then bring them in. If I leave them outside over time they go brittle.

Steakandwine · 03/06/2024 15:38

Thing is I get spiders making home in the peg bag so it doesn't really work for me. I would bring them in but I can't be bothered to keep bringing them in and out 😂

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 03/06/2024 15:39

I bring the pegs in and use a retractable washing line so that gets put away too after use, keeps the line clean.

Topseyt123 · 03/06/2024 15:45

I bring ours in. They last much longer that way. If left out too often they get battered by the elements, go brittle and break, especially if they are plastic.

Most of mine are wooden and are pretty solid, though I do have a few plastic ones. They are all lasting well so far.
