Leaving pegs on washing line?

I've always left my pegs on the washing line... All year round.
I saw a peg bag in the shop and now I'm wondering... Should I bring my pegs in each day with the washing? AIBU to leave them out all the time?🤣
Do you bring yours in? Why? 🤷‍♀️🤣

Pretty sure that Mother would arrange to have me struck by lightening if I left the pegs out. There are only us oldies at home now so once the weeks washing is done I put the rotary drier away too. My garden is very pretty, the drier is not

I bought stick on numbers from Amazon. Much posher. 😁

I used a screw to scratch the number and some shading to emphasise it - rather artistically, I thought - then wiped paint over it and wiped it off, so there are fine lines showing the number. It looked quite good.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 03/06/2024 18:18

As for leaving the pegs out, no, it looks scruffy. Take them in.

ThisQuirkyPeachHare · 03/06/2024 18:28

Hahahaha to be honest, I wasn't expecting many replies.... Definitely not so many strong feelings about it 🤣
Thanks for your time 😅

I always bring my pegs in and I'd recommend the Brabantia peg bag, it's got a hook to hang on the line or to hook to your jeans belt loop - so convenient. www.dunelm.com/product/brabantia-premium-peg-bag-black-1000202759 and they're only £8 in Dunelm 😀.

I bring them in because I collapse my line and put its cover on

Me too. Sad as fuck

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 03/06/2024 22:15

Ooh this is great - a new divisory subject for MN. When you join, you should be asked whether you're shoes on or shoes off in the house, whether you think pierced ears on children is cute and sensible or child abuse, and now, whether or not you leave your pegs out overnight.

goingslightlyinsane · 03/06/2024 23:03

It was drilled into me from a young age that only common people leave pegs on the line.

My pegs live in a peg house bag and so should yours!

NattyTurtle · 03/06/2024 23:17

Another one who always brings them in - they last longer. I've had the same pegs for decades and mostly they are as good as new. I keep them in a container which sits in the laundry basket.

Claide · 03/06/2024 23:25

Being them in or they get rusty! We also have plastic ones which seem to go brittle if left out

I've a rotary clothes line and always close it and put the cover on. Pegs are in a bag and hung on a hook in the cupboard.

I remember my Mum always cleaned the washing line before she hung out the laundry, as it did get dirty. No covers in those days!

I've never heard of a clothes line cover! Must be a UK thing maybe?

I bought aluminium pegs like Winter2020 shows.

It's the other household members who also leave pegs out - plastic get brittle and ping off in my eyes and wooden ones went slimy and rusty.

I have been bought "normal" pegs since by extended family I just got rid of them and stick with the aluminium pegs - they also do aluminium socks dryers.

They cost a bit more initially but have lasted well - and saves me having to worry about getting them in and storing them so they don't disappear.

I bought aluminium pegs years ago for when my plastic ones disintegrate. However, I take such good care of the plastic ones they are still going strong 😅

I will still bring the aluminium ones in however, as others have said what's the point of having to move them to peg things on the line?

Magnastorm · 03/06/2024 23:33

I leave mine out. It's just less faff and i really couldn't give a crap if people think it's common or some other daft shit.

Gottleogear · 04/06/2024 05:53

@NattyTurtle
I use this one

Unless we're in a heatwave, I'm usually doing consecutive leads of washing so no need to take the pegs in. And yes, I leave washing out overnight - our garden gets morning sun and a load left out overnight in midsummer will be nearly dry by 8am.

It honestly would never occur to me to take the pegs in. I must be very common 😁 The line stays up all summer anyway as it's difficult to get to the far end which is attached to the fence at the back of the back border. I usually get it in end of October, and it goes back out in February/March depending on the weather.

Sago1 · 03/06/2024 12:18

Leaving them out looks messy, they get dirty and rust.
I have a shoulder bag for mine so it’s easy to peg put and put them back in the bag.

That's a brilliant idea.

kittybiscuits · 04/06/2024 06:37

Very slovenly 😄

You wash your clothes, then you hang them out with dirty pegs. It's a no from me.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 04/06/2024 06:48

NattyTurtle · 03/06/2024 23:25

I've never heard of a clothes line cover! Must be a UK thing maybe?

We do have all the weather here (admittedly in short bursts and not as extreme as other places). But the result is that anything left outside rarely stays clean and so covers are necessary.

Although I have a retractable line so no cover.

MrsDTucker · 04/06/2024 07:08

It never occurred to me to bring in pegs????

Those that leave pegs on the line must have a big garden.

My washing line is right where the path is so if I didn't take it down I wouldn't be able to walk through the garden to the bins.

I take the pegs off but leave them in a bag outside.

CharlotteBog · 04/06/2024 08:22

I have been thinking about this (deary me!).

I put my pegs in a peg bag. I think it's quicker, so it's nothing to do with saving time.

When I bring the washing in I tend to scoop the clothes up in my left hand, while taking the pegs off with my right. I can get quite a few clothes in my left hand and a few pegs in the other before dumping in laundry basket and the pegs in the bag around my neck.

Leaving the pegs on would need more dexterity I think. They would also need moving about when I put the next load on. If your last load was socks and small things and the next is bedding I'd have to remove the extraneous pegs so the bedding hangs smoothly.

My line stays out all the time, it would be a pain to retract it and pull it out each time. It takes over the whole garden as it goes from one corner to the diagonal opposite. I do try and hang shorter things in the middle so people can move about, but if I'm home alone I don't bother and just flap it out of the way.

Zanatdy · 04/06/2024 08:24

I never leave my pegs out as they get rusty / dirty

Fizbosshoes · 04/06/2024 08:25

I bring them in, the plastic ones go brittle if left out

Zanatdy · 04/06/2024 08:25

My mum always cleans the washing line before using it. I do occasionally if I remember to take a wipe / wet tissue

Nannyfannybanny · 04/06/2024 08:33

Pegs in,used to be a cotton peg bag, eventually forgotten, and left in the rain.wooden ones left out leave marks on clothes.plastic becomes brittle, metal rusts. Now have a plastic container. Rotary airer, with cover. Anyone coming round and we're using the garden,it's removed to behind the shed, and there's a little flap that closes over the hole,so you wouldn't even know I was there. I have made the mistake.....once of folding it down without removing the pegs!!

Nannyfannybanny · 04/06/2024 08:35

I forgot to add, the pigeons and gulls, poo on the washing line if it's left unfolded.
