I do. And both of our families also share the same views.

I'm not sure I could have a relationship with somebody that didn't, but perhaps I am being small minded!

Do you share the same views as your SO?

OP posts:
decionsdecisions62 · 24/05/2024 22:12

Yes we do. I think if either set of families had someone with different political views they would stand out like a sore thumb.

Samlewis96 · 24/05/2024 22:13

Nope. Lol.

Frozenblox · 24/05/2024 22:14

Not 100% but pretty much. We would vote the same.

lavenderlou · 24/05/2024 22:16

Yes, pretty much. My parents have completely opposing political views and have been married for nearly 50 years. They seem to manage ok but they both have quite strong views so there are frequent disagreements.

HappyAutumnFields · 24/05/2024 22:19

Yes. I don’t see how anyone could be in a longterm relationship with someone with profoundly opposed political views, unless you’re the kind of person for whom politics is something akin to ‘favourite icecream favour’.

RobertaFirmino · 24/05/2024 22:28

Socialism is important to me so there's no way I could be with a right winger. I am certain that any Tory would feel the same about me.

LieutOliviaBenson · 24/05/2024 22:29

Very similar, yes.

Mooda · 24/05/2024 22:30

We're on the same page. Not identical on everything but close enough. How do you separate politics from values and how do you separate values from your relationship?

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 24/05/2024 22:30

Broadly yes but we differ a lot on minor matters

biscuitcat · 24/05/2024 22:33

Pretty similar - he's become more left wing since we've been together interestingly. I work in a job where I see first hand the impact of all the cuts over the past 10/15 years, whereas he's in a typically quite right wing profession, so I'm fairly sure I've influenced him.

MrsTomRipley · 24/05/2024 22:34

Many years ago when I was at school one of my friends had 3 posters in their front windows, one Conservative, one Labour, one Liberal. It always made me laugh. I thought it was clear they all had different opinions - and that they all respected each others.

WeightoftheWorld · 24/05/2024 22:34

For the most part yes, but we don't necessarily always agree on every bit of minutiae or specific political theory or whatever. We also don't always necessarily have a concrete opinion on every single matter either and we discuss things together with an open mind.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 24/05/2024 22:35

I don't, not really.

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/05/2024 22:35

yes, we are both left wing, couldn't imagine being with someone who didn't share at least some of my politics

Eqei · 24/05/2024 22:35

We do
Nd neither of us would be able to be with someone that didn’t.
I struggle to have friends that aren’t likeminded when it comes to politics but that’s because of the extremeness of it I feel.

🙈🙈

DramaAlpaca · 24/05/2024 22:35

Pretty much, yes. It's important to both of us that we are.

JustMarriedBecca · 24/05/2024 22:35

My views have become more in line with his I think.

I've always been centralist though and actually, whether that's red or blue depends on who is in power. I voted Cameron and Blair. I'd never vote Boris or Corbyn.

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/05/2024 22:37

and am successfully encouraging my traditionally RW colleagues towards the left! With reasoned argument and common sense

Cattery · 24/05/2024 22:38

Yes we do. Neither of us can stand greed and unfairness

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 24/05/2024 22:40

Not really but then we rarely discuss politics,

PostMenPatWithACat · 24/05/2024 22:40

Yep. Please God tell me there's hope for the children to see sense.

No, I'm left, he's right. Been married 33 years this year. He's also Catholic, I'm CofE. He's English, I'm Welsh.

We're also both very political. Both Remainers.

donkey86 · 24/05/2024 22:42

Not at all. He’s to the left of Corbyn, I’m pretty centrist, slightly right leaning. He’s high tax, high state control, I’m low tax, low interference. He doesn’t believe in private property, I believe capitalism has mostly been a force for good. He’s TWAW, I’m GC.

For the most part we muddle along fine. It’s only on the last of those issues that we’ve had to agree not to talk about it for fear of the strength of feeling.

backaftera2yearbreak · 24/05/2024 22:44

Nope. He’s a Protestant Belfast boy. I’m not sure anyone I’ve ever met has the same political views as him 🙄
