I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

1962 Cuban missile crisis. I was six, my brother 3, my mother pregnant. My father had a plan to protect us from nuclear war following John F Kennedy speech to the nation.

1980s with babies of my own we faced it again.

So for those who are fearful. We've been down this road before.

The threat of Armageddon was always in the background – but now young people have to deal with the pandemic and climate crisis too<br>

It’s just trying to appeal to extreme right wing Reform voters none of which unless very old would have had to be conscripted! Complete hypocrisy!

I'm sick and tired of this nudge theory, which really took off under Dominic Cummings the arse hole thought he had it cracked. For a time he did.

Coronavirus: the politics of Cummings’ cull

Not as stupid as was hoped, ordinary working people can resist Cummings and his super-weirdos, writes Sean Ledwith In the science-fiction television series, The Expanse, a profit-driven corporation, conspiring with rogue elements of the state, presi...

Technically, I think we would
be in a state of war if Russian planes flew over NATO airspace of vice versa.
It’s very political. It only takes someone to say something which can start a state of war.

Weirdly, Putin was quite sympathetic towards America after the 911 attacks. Shows how times change.

Rishi needs to take a nap and give his head a wobble.

I don’t fit this description, but I think National Service as it’s being suggested is a great idea.

Delawear · 26/05/2024 00:15

Sunak is desperate, won’t happen

You don’t fit the description so you are a very old man that was conscripted? If not easy to say it is a good idea when it will not be your reality.

I think you know exactly the point I was trying to make. We all talk about things everyday that aren’t our own specific reality. It doesn’t make our views on them any less valid.

Sunhatweather · 26/05/2024 00:36

Yes, I be very happy to send my hardworking 18yr old for national service, delaying his career and further education to fight in wars that have very little to do with us and started by politicians🙄
Have we learned nothing from the past?

Have you read the article describing what would actually happen?

likely on the brink of war with so many situations in the world so it’s not an unreasonable post as there’s all sorts of shit going on that nobody is gonna tell us about till it’s hit the fan.

I actually don’t know the point you were trying to make and evidently you don’t understand the point I am making as your opinion which is as far as I can see essentially is- isn’t it a great idea to make others carry out National Service, is made on the basis of being secure in the knowledge this will not be something you will be made to do.

Let me clear that up for you. I think it’s a good idea. I would also have no problem whatsoever in doing it if it came to it, and I already undertake hours of volunteering a week on top of a FT job.

claretblue79 · 26/05/2024 01:33

Lots of people volunteer, myself included. It’s not volunteering if it is one of two compulsory options. Anyone remember Cameron’s big society? How did that go?

Times are a little bit different now.

BeverForget · 26/05/2024 01:41

This is just Sunak attempting to shore up the right of the party/country.
There will be some narrative about 'woke' young people and the left to follow.
I wouldn't be surprised to see 'British history to be compulsory in schools' as an election pledge next.

Good for you but no one is forcing you to volunteer, you are exercising freedom of choice, NS isn’t that!

SashaPicklepops · 26/05/2024 03:43

Tbh I think you are right about something being afoot. We are having bigger investments in our military, being told to stockpile 3 days food, wars in Ukraine and Gaza, of course the cogs that turn to keep the country going will be the first to know, food, water, transport, medical supplies and Military equipment are being prepared for a reason, we just haven't been told yet.

sheoaouhra · 26/05/2024 04:26

Igotjelly · 25/05/2024 22:50

And in fact reading about it (noting I hate the Tories) it’s a great idea. Doesn’t necessarily need to be military service, can also take the form of supporting the emergency services.

As if the emergency services have the time and money to support and supervise a sudden influx of unskilled 18 years olds who will need training, mentoring, supporting, and finding something to do!

marie3e · 26/05/2024 04:32

I wouldn't want to be in an ambulance with a teenager getting forced to help me

Whenwillitgetwarm · 26/05/2024 04:57

Sunak’s probably lining up his FILs business, Infosys to be awarded a massive tax payer funded contract to help implement his ‘volunteering’ scheme.
