I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

2 major concerns in my view:

  1. Bird flu mutating. It’s a big concern. People now being infected from dairy cattle in America.
  2. Climate change. This is the big one. The charts of unprecedented warming are shocking, especially over the past 2 years. We are in uncharted territory, and it’s kicking off far quicker than scientists predicted. And we are doing next to nothing to mitigate it, so the trajectory remains straight up.
Paul2023 · 25/05/2024 21:59

I think it’s entirely possible that a Cold War could start again. Putin can keep his war going , as long as he wants and it’s possible he won’t stop at Ukraine. Ukraine is only able to fight because they are being funded by NATO countries.

If that happened though, I don’t see how having an extra 3 days worth of food will help us !

So yes, as I said -a threat of war is possible.

This is a terrifying read when you suffer with anxiety. 😔

I barely scraped through the whole COVID /lockdowns saga mental health wise and I'm still not back to how I was before.

I'm torn between making a list of stockpiling items or googling easy ways out tbvh.

You and me both. I'd managed to miss the thread yesterday and am wishing I never opened it today.

I can't even look at my beautiful children thinking I have done this to them. I should never have brought them into this world.

I am in absolute panic. If anyone has any reassuring words to get me out of this pit I would appreciate it.

I’ve heard speculation that the Palestine situation is going to escalate.

Yep I had to have the MMR in my 30s on the advice of Public Health England (as it was then) for reasons that I won't go into. The vaccination nurse at my surgery said that it was open to anyone who wanted it but most people aren't aware of the issues with the older single vaccine. And honestly I wasn't either.

I didn't know that about the old single vaccines. Fortunately I've had mumps and German measles though 😁

marie3e · 25/05/2024 22:24

I made an Amazon basket, but I thought I will need a fire pit if things go that bad to need all this, and I've decided not to buy any of it, and I don't care

Throughout history there’s been so many wars, so many disasters it’s just part of life. The majority of people are absolutely fine. The only thing that’s different to how life has nearly always been is the visibility of the bad things.

It isn't that stupid a concept.
This is what happened in food supply in 2020.

You’re right. It isn’t a stupid concept.

I’m in Australia we locked down later than most places.

Everyone thought it was going to be like contagion.

The problem was no one factored in was panic buying and how the supply chain works now compared to 20+ years ago and it was absolute madness.

Shops were stripped of inventory and they don’t keep it out the back anymore.

Everything is located off site and it’s transported from a warehouse somewhere. The problem was there wasn’t the inventory in those warehouses.

I think that you are onto something. The supermarkets are worried the panic buying that happened in 2020 will happen again and they are preparing for people to panic again.

The question is - what is going to happen in the next four weeks that people are going to panic over?

Both of these things suggest potential
lockdown to me. We need cars back off the roads, hopefully it will make people reassess (clean) veganism as good on all fronts. We need to stop buying so much shit, fast fashion etc.

The World is one big old mess at the moment and unfortunately there’s no getting away from that. That does not mean however that you are at risk of harm from imminent nuclear war (*other apocalyptic scenarios are available). It means we should be bloody grateful for what we have, and that we can offer our children relative stability and security. It’s a luxury denied to many.

There is absolutely no need for anyone to be in a spiral of panic. Some people on this thread should be ashamed of baseless scaremongering. incidentally I wonder if at least some of them might not be as they seem.

Ffs, feeling sick reading the rest of this. Is something going to happen, do we need to be worried or all just a silly thread

Paul2023 · 25/05/2024 22:36

It makes me annoyed when I hear about panic buying ! Seriously, if the shit hit the fan and war broke out , what good would a few extra cans of soup or beans do ?!

If things got that bad a bit of extra food would make fuck all difference!

I’d be very surprised if anything significant other than what’s already going on were about to happen.

BettyBoo246 · 25/05/2024 22:42

The government have updated their website this last week to advise how to deal (stock up) with an emergency i.e war, plandemic, blackouts etc. Also we are apparently already at war with Russia according to some mps and ngos and Sunak made it clear he didn't want to be a wartime pm hence then early election call.

SpoonyFish · 25/05/2024 22:44

I just read that Sunak has announced national service for 18 year olds if Tories get re-elected ... it feels like they don't even want to win?!

It's basic emergency planning for a range of scenarios from localised bad weather to the end of the world and everything in between.

It's all been in place for decades and it just happens to have been mentioned as official advice again. This thread clearly shows that the public needs to be reminded of the plan more often, so they take note of it and get used to its existence.

Having a bit of spare food in is not designed to protect people against nuclear war, just to give people a bit of resilience so they don't run out at an inconvenient moment, eg when the weather is bad. Or if there's a giltch in the banking system and you can't pay for things.

It's just like the emergency services. The presence of fire engines, police officers and ambulances doesn't mean that you should expect your house to burn down, to get robbed and to have a heart attack. They just there to help out if those things happen.

It would be from Sept 2025 so for those panicking does not point to imminent doom.

My sister worked in ICU, which was filled up during the waves with people dying. Once the vaccine came along, the only people in there were unvaccinated.
My close friend all the way over in North Carolina had the same experience.
Both have retired from ICU since.

Much of what you wrote is untrue.
I am sorry that Covid hurt your feelings by making you feel unimportant. But you should refrain from posting poison.

This.

And in fact reading about it (noting I hate the Tories) it’s a great idea. Doesn’t necessarily need to be military service, can also take the form of supporting the emergency services.

Holycows · 25/05/2024 22:53

💐 I'm sorry. Feeling a bit scared myself. My first baby is due in July and I'm wondering what on earth is going on. Knowing there's nothing I can do if things really kick off is helping. Children are brought into the world through all sorts of thing. Just remember it's not your fault. ❤️

It’s a terrible idea, there are reasons we got rid of conscription to begin with!

It’s just trying to appeal to extreme right wing Reform voters none of which unless very old would have had to be conscripted! Complete hypocrisy!
