Have you ever been on a game show?

Purely random curiosity after watching some 90’s game shows. Would love to hear from anyone who appeared on one of these - more so if you won! How long before you received your prizes? Where did you moor your speedboat?

Not a game show as such. Last year my husband won a place on the plane with Saturday night takeaway. They had a TV crew set up locally to us with an opportunity to win a holiday to Florida.

We had a fun week away with a few compulsory events to attend but mainly able to do as we pleased. Hotel, theme park tickets and $2K worth of vouchers to spend at the parks.

'Let's see what you could have won'.

Lurkingandlearning · 18/05/2024 22:22

wha a good idea for a thread. I haven’t but looking forward to reading posts from those who have.

Hotttchoc · 18/05/2024 22:23

No but people I know have

i don't think they win anything

PitterPatter3 · 18/05/2024 22:25

I swear the sort of people who went on the 80s ones they show on Challenge TV just don’t exist anymore.

Goodawn · 18/05/2024 22:30

I applied for weakest link and got an interview but I didn't go.

Great story

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 18/05/2024 22:31

Not a game show nor me but a sibling was on Mastermind years ago

Borborygmus · 18/05/2024 22:35

Not personally, but my dad was on Criss Cross Quiz a VERY long time ago. He won £10 of premium bonds.

InheritedClock · 18/05/2024 22:38

I was on my country’s version of University Challenge. We won.

I went to an audition for TWL. I was on the reserve list. So if any of the 70-100 people selected were unable to film the show due to illness etc - I would have been called up.

A lovely customer, sadly no longer with us was a member of the 1p club in Deal or No Deal.

alloutofcareunits · 18/05/2024 22:44

As a child I was on Puzzle Party hosted by Giles Brandreth, I was 8 and can't remember much about it but we did win a stuffed gnu that was kept in a glass case in the school reception 😂

PitterPatter3 · 18/05/2024 22:49

My mum went on Crackerjack in the 60s. She won a Crackerjack pencil which she still has.

pambeesleyhalpert · 18/05/2024 22:50

I was on the chase. Didn't win! Made it into the bloopers so that's always fun when it's shown at Xmas 🫠

RatATatTatty · 18/05/2024 22:58

DH was on Lucky Numbers, won £500 - mid nineties show hosted by Shane Ritchie. They filmed two shows per sitting, the other show was won by a woman who got £10,000! A friend was on Wheel of Fortune and won a car.

InNeedOfAWin · 19/05/2024 14:02

@Qwertyme that must have been really cool!

Honestly, I was watching the price is right yesterday and this woman won a speed boat, a hot tub, fridge freezer and all sorts of other random stuff!
I can just imagine my neighbours watching my boat being delivered if that was me. I live absolutely no where near any stretch of water!

AutumnLeaves333 · 19/05/2024 14:13

I always wondered if they were allowed ti take the cash instead if they didn’t want a speedboat etc or would you just have to sell it yourself?

Jagsy · 19/05/2024 14:15

Great thread, never been on a game show but watch lots an imagine winning lots of holidays 😀

IchWill · 19/05/2024 14:21

I've been on a few. First one in 1997, Big Break. I won. I was offered the prizes or cash equivalent. I took the latter, it was about £1200 as I'd just missed out on the top prize of a holiday in Barnstaple when the black ball bounced off the pocket in the final seconds. Jim D was a lech. John V was an absolute sweetheart. Got the cheque same day.

I then went on Weakest Link in 2007. I won it and won £3230. Can't recall how and quickly I got prize money.

I won another game show that was short-lived, presented by Chris Tarrant called The Great Pretender, but the other contestants "stole" and split my winnings. So I walked away with nothing. It was about £3k.

I went on 1vs100 a few times, beat 96 people, but from the 4 remaining I wasn't picked to play for the money.

I came second on Tipping Point. The bloke who beat me got the £10k and the winnings he built up. He took me and another contestant out for a drink after.

I'm desperate to get on the 1% Club. Have applied before. Didn't hear back.

aimingforthesky · 19/05/2024 14:28

I won Supermarket Sweep in 1997 when Dale Winton hosted. My mate entered us, I didn't answer any questions and she did the final run around bit! Won a grand each and redecorated the house and went on holiday .

FitAt50 · 19/05/2024 17:14

I was on Pointless about 6 years ago and loved it. We won the trophy but did not get a pointless answers (actresses in Dinner Ladies, Keeping Up Appearances or Dinner Ladies). Really great experience and loads fof fun.

IsANameImportant · 19/05/2024 17:22

I was on the 1% club but only got to the 30% question. If I had won anything, they would have paid me 30 days after the show aired.

I’ve just applied for Michael McKintyre’s Spin The Wheel.

LessonsInPhysics · 19/05/2024 17:36

I was on a day time C5 game show. I got to round 2 and won nothing. The person who beat me won £500 - it was all very low budget.
A few weeks after I was on it, the show got pulled as it had one of those dodgy "phone this number to be in with a chance of winning £20000" and it turns out they weren't given out any prizes.
I retired from TV when I discovered the camera really does add two stone.

Iwantmybed · 19/05/2024 17:42

My Dad was on 15 to 1. I'd love to try a gameshow, more catchphrase than countdown though.
