Have you ever been on a game show?

Purely random curiosity after watching some 90’s game shows. Would love to hear from anyone who appeared on one of these - more so if you won! How long before you received your prizes? Where did you moor your speedboat?

No

My Dad was on “What’s my line?” and the contestants had to write their name on a flip chart. He misspelled his own name on TV. Someone in my class at school found out he was on the show, and put it on the TV in the 6th from common room, I was mortified (my Dad was a “character”) and my friends called him by the misspelled version of his name for the next decade. Hideous.

RichPetunia · 19/05/2024 17:49

A member of my family was on 15 to 1. From being the brightest of people, when faced with the reality of being in a tv studio, his mind went blank. As soon as he was knocked out he was able to answer the questions again 😁😁.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 19/05/2024 17:51

Not me but NDN’s/friends went on Big Break. A young Ronnie O’Sullivan was playing and won the woman a dishwasher or washing machine. Their DD was an attractive teenager then and ended up dating Ronnie from then on. The dad of the family was an aspiring comedian and I think had been on tv.

Alarae · 19/05/2024 17:57

Another not me, but someone in my school year was on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Phoned a friend for the last question, which was another person from my year, who got the answer right. He won £125,000.

Poshjock · 19/05/2024 18:08

I've been on 3 from the 90s. Wheel of Fortune, 100 to 1 and Win Lose or Draw. I won a washing machine and portable tv/video on WoF, total fail on 110 to 1 but got a mug and I won money (£100?) on WLD and of course the Brass Easellette photo frame which I still have.

It was a brilliant experience from start to finish. All expenses met and during filming, well looked after. I can't remember there being any delay in prizes, I arranged for the washing machine to be delivered directly to my mum and I kept the TV.

InNeedOfAWin · 19/05/2024 19:24

Thanks for your stories! These are really interesting. A friend of mine was on bargain hunt many years ago - I don’t think he won anything though. It was so cheesy to watch!

I've been on a few. First one in 1997, Big Break. I won. I was offered the prizes or cash equivalent. I took the latter, it was about £1200 as I'd just missed out on the top prize of a holiday in Barnstaple when the black ball bounced off the pocket in the final seconds. Jim D was a lech. John V was an absolute sweetheart. Got the cheque same day.

I then went on Weakest Link in 2007. I won it and won £3230. Can't recall how and quickly I got prize money.

I won another game show that was short-lived, presented by Chris Tarrant called The Great Pretender, but the other contestants "stole" and split my winnings. So I walked away with nothing. It was about £3k.

I went on 1vs100 a few times, beat 96 people, but from the 4 remaining I wasn't picked to play for the money.

I came second on Tipping Point. The bloke who beat me got the £10k and the winnings he built up. He took me and another contestant out for a drink after.

I'm desperate to get on the 1% Club. Have applied before. Didn't hear back.

Fucking hell. The holiday was meant to say BARBADOS! How did my phone change it to Barnstaple?!? 😂😂

@IchWill doesn’t surprise me about Jim D. Eurgh!

I wanted to get a photo with him and John afterwards in the green room. Jim said I could only get a photo with him if I sat on his lap as he was "too tired". My photo with him is me gingerly perched on his knee, grimacing.

Oh, and get this. In the bumph from the BBC ahead of filming stipulated that female contestants must wear a dress or skirt on the day of filming!!!

On the actual show that went out, Jim makes a comment, "Nice legs!" Then slid off the chair next to me and onto the floor!!! 🫣

I applied for weakest link and got an interview but I didn't go.

Great story

I did go but didn’t get picked. It was full of young white women in their 20s and it was heavily suggested you’d have far better chance of getting on if you were male, older or non-white as they needed a “diverse lineup”

Nice one! Who was your chaser? Did you leave with the prize money that day or was there a wait?

I was on a show in Ireland called Winning Streak. You entered by getting 3 stars on a scratch card of the same name and you sent it in. Then all 3 star tickets were put in a drum and 5 names pulled out randomly on the live show every week. It will be 12 years ago next Sat. I won €67,800. Got chq there and then.

Tarkan · 20/05/2024 00:21

I've been on The Chase as well and won £10,500.

I've applied to a few other quizzes over the years but not had any response from most of them.

The furthest I got from the others was auditioning for University Challenge and got to the second or third round of auditions for my uni (can't remember exactly which round it was now but it was a zoom call where we had questions as if we were on the show and we had to "buzz" in to answer then we had team rounds to discuss answers, I didn't get past that audition though).

Funnywonder · 20/05/2024 00:40

Two girls in my class were on Blockbusters in the 80's. That's the closest I ever got to a quiz show - ie nowhere near. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes. But I admire all those who do go on for my entertainment!

Groovy48592747 · 20/05/2024 01:02

Family Fortunes when I was 18. I think I came away with about £1000 after the winnings had been shared. It was great fun.

Anne Hegarty.

We got the money through the post by cheque - it wasn't a long wait for it, maybe a week or so.

TheEyesOfLucyJordon · 20/05/2024 22:02

I was on Beat The Chasers. It was like being a film star for a day 😊

Hobbesmanc · 20/05/2024 22:20

I did 15 to 1 when I was still in six form. It was fairly new on channel four. I did a phone audition and then they sent me a travel voucher to London. I stayed with friends of my mum the night before. I'd never been anywhere that far on my own.

William G Stewart was rather brusque to us all. I was by far the youngest. Got through round one but swiftly eliminated. It was so fast. I can still remember the questions.

I also did Going for Gold a few years later and a daytime thing called Change That with Linda Barker and a guy off Blue Peter.

StealthNameChange · 20/05/2024 22:22

I was on Deal or No Deal.
