Have you ever been on a game show?

Purely random curiosity after watching some 90’s game shows. Would love to hear from anyone who appeared on one of these - more so if you won! How long before you received your prizes? Where did you moor your speedboat?

My mum was on 15 - 1 in the 90's.

Zampa · 20/05/2024 22:30

My Dad and his mates from football won Eggheads but sadly not a lot of money as the team before had just won the huge rollover. He said how nice Jeremy Vine was.

I think they have me about half of their winnings in sponsorship for my marathon race 🩷.

Fucking hell. The holiday was meant to say BARBADOS! How did my phone change it to Barnstaple?!? 😂😂

This made me laugh!

rockingbird · 20/05/2024 22:38

My son's teacher won 250k on who wants to be a millionaire.. told no one he was on the show until the lockdown zoom call the day it was being aired 😮 he's still there as a teacher! The irony is the question he passed on and took the money was about the solar system and my son who's autistic is a professor of astronomy lol

This really struck a chord for me - purely because my 3 year old is autistic and totally obsessed with the solar system! I wonder if he will follow the path of your son! 😊

Not a quiz show, but I was on Flog It. I only went along to the valuation day because I was having issues with leaving my home due to depression and anxiety and I was trying to acclimatise myself to going out. The item I ended up selling was valued at between £80 to £120, but when it went to auction, it actually sold for £580. Not a life changing sum in itself, but it turned out to be a life changing experience, because I was watching the dealers in the auction room and thinking to myself "I could do that". So I did, and now I'm a full time antique dealer!

Wow! That's brilliant. Great that you've found something you love.

I went for an 'audition' for Tipping Point (don't watch it, but didn't say that 😁)
It was full of very confident, deliberately? quirky people with wacky hobbies.
One quieter chap I saw later on Dale's In It To Win It (but he didn't)
I miss the shy, unassuming and awkward contestants of Bullseye, Blockbusters etc.

ChristmasFluff · 22/05/2024 09:27

I had a friend who was on Runaround with others from her school, and was really annoyed about it being a set-up, in that there were reshoots for various pointless reasons if the kids they wanted to win did not get the questions right.

I'd have thought she was maybe making it up/exaggerating, but she was 28 at the time she told me, and was still majorly upset at the injustice!

I was about to quote your post when I read it! I live in Barnstaple and I can tell you, I would be disappointed if I won that as a top prize even if I lived here or not 😂

I was on the chase. Didn't win! Made it into the bloopers so that's always fun when it's shown at Xmas 🫠

Who was your chaser and what were they like?

Jenny, she was absolutely lovely

OctopusFriend · 31/10/2024 20:35

I was on University Challenge when it was Bamber Gascoigne - he was really lovely and charming!
My daughter was on it when it was Jeremy Paxman (less so). Neither of our teams got very far ☹️

Not quite a game show but I was on Bitsa.

Yeah, about 5.

Most you've probably never heard of!

Most I won was £100!

birdiesings · 31/10/2024 20:42

FIL was on Countdown but was put up against an octochamp.

I like Countdown because it's one of the few shows that doesn't aim to cast either sob stories or "I'm so random!!! 🤪" types. It's just normal people quietly solving puzzles.

My Dad was on 15 to 1. I'd love to try a gameshow, more catchphrase than countdown though.

So was mine!

I agree, I love Countdown. Tough to be against an octochamp!

ChunkyMonkey2020 · 31/10/2024 21:06

My best friend was on deal or no deal. She was 18 at the time and walked away with 30 grand.

BabyCloud · 31/10/2024 21:21

No but my ex was on Eggheads.

WelcomeToMonkeyTown · 31/10/2024 21:28

My Dad was on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. He was quite entertaining, especially as he phoned my mum (his ex wife) as his phone-a-friend 😂

Eyesopenwideawake · 31/10/2024 21:30

I won €7,000 on the Strawberry Alarm Clock radio show in Dublin. They read out a statement "The 'blanks' are blanks'" and people rang in to guess the missing words. The pot went up by €10 a day, with three callers a day guessing, so this one had been running for MONTHS! Once someone guessed the first word was 'marshmallows' I knew the second word was 'floaters' but it took ages to get through. The presenters were very relieved that it was finally over... 😂

Did your mum answer the question correctly?

WelcomeToMonkeyTown · 31/10/2024 21:38

Yes she knew it.

Chris T made a big joke out of "do you think she'd give you the right answer? Does she like you enough...?"

But she'd already pre-agreed she'd get a cut if she helped 😜
