I hate sharing food!

We went out for Sunday lunch yesterday.. absolutely delicious but the vegetables for 4 came in one dish and then everyone was very polite and only took a little bit. I want my own dish so I know what's mine and what I can eat. Also.. same with Tapas...I like my own portion. I don't mind so much if it's a Thai starter or something like that as it is clear that there are two of something and two of something else. I find it stressful sharing!

I hear you! Solidarity on this!

Itiswhysofew · 06/05/2024 18:24

I'm not a sharer either!

I think it comes from having a DS making sure she always got the biggest & best when we were kids. Also, being the only vegetarian for many years amongst friends & family, with them wanting to try my meal in a restaurants 😠. Everyone knows I don't share my grub.

Snap, I am like it because I am an only child and absolutely hate sharing as I don't want to take too much and be seen as greedy, so I only take a little bit. Unfortunately sil who I detest will take the lions share in the veg situation.
I once upset pil as we were having Chinese and she wanted to share mine. She wouldn't even accept me saying no, several times so I told her to fuck right off.

it even goes as far a sweets, my wife laughs because I count out Smarties!

PauliesWalnuts · 06/05/2024 18:47

My heart sinks when a friend books a restaurant for us and when we get there I find it’s a “small plates” situation and we’re expected to share. She’s 8st soaking wet with the appetite of a bird and I eat like a horse. I end up getting double what she does and looking like a fat pig.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/05/2024 18:49

I don’t mind but I get what you’re saying. It’s nice to know what’s yours.

I don’t mind things like Tapas where the plan is to share. I do mind when people take food from your plate or ask to when it’s one thing per person.

DignityAlwaysDignity · 06/05/2024 18:52

Not a fan either. Especially with cuisines where I don't like much, and others expect to get a whole variety of dishes to share. I just want the one or two things that I like, all to myself!

I love sharing, it’s just not an issue. If you’re still hungry, order more.

pinkyredrose · 06/05/2024 19:01

I'm so with you, I can't stand people's hands in my food!

Goldenbear · 06/05/2024 19:03

I’m the opposite, I like it because I eat less.

ohthejoys21 · 06/05/2024 19:05

Me too. Went to Ottolenghi on Saturday night with friends and even if you order your own dish, they put it in the middle of the table with extra forks to share.

Think back just 10 years and would be unheard of.. everyone ordered for themselves.
If someone on my table has a cold do I really want to be spending my evening watching to check they don't stick their own fork in?

HATE IT!!!

mynameiscalypso · 06/05/2024 19:05

For someone with a history of eating disorders, it's an absolute nightmare. I can't stand it. The only person I will share food with is my 4 year old.

TheBirdintheCave · 06/05/2024 19:05

I'm autistic and not knowing how much of the food is mine is a thing that causes a lot of anxiety. I'm ok sharing with my husband as I trust him to deal out even portions but meals that involve lots of people and sharing are just not for me.

Wherearewe2001 · 06/05/2024 19:10

Pete, have you thought about my Bhunas?

CurlewKate · 06/05/2024 19:11

I LOVE sharing! I am not meant for mumsnet!🤣

We did a 3 small plate brunch and someone declared “let’s all get something different so we can share”

No. I just want have MY 3 plates to myself and not feel guilty about having more than my share of a plate I wanted to order.

RabbitsRock · 06/05/2024 19:14

Absolutely get this OP! I’m a bit of a lightweight, often ordering a child’s portion (especially if it’s a roast), and I like to just have my own food. Friends & I went out for pizza & fries at a pop up place once. The food was delicious but again, I ate only a small amount but paid quite a lot for what I had as we got pizzas & fries to share.

Glipsy · 06/05/2024 19:51

I always do sharing given the choice and always serve meals that way at home. Funnily enough I think it’s also an ED thing, I like not having to look at my own singular plate of food to be eaten and people seeing what I’m going to eat, I can just go a bit here and a bit there and before you know it, whammo, a meal! Plus I get to try loads of different stuff.

Sorry to the rest of you, I’m totally the mate picking the tapas place

ohthejoys21 · 06/05/2024 22:18

Although I hate sharing, when we have friends for dinner I do a buffet which when you think about is the same as sharing I guess.

Damnloginpopup · 06/05/2024 22:24

Put it on my plate and stop making me think. If I wanted to think I'd have cooked. Shared veg FFS.

If I cook and you serve your portion the rest is mine if I want it. Don't tell me you might have some more. If you want more take it now. I'm not letting it go to waste or go cold. Take it or leave it.

And no. That's my crispy shredded beef. We can share the prawn crackers but you can fuck off eating my choice of Chinese. You want it you order it.

Now I'm laughing.. you won't come to me for buffet style then? How do I know how much everyone wants to eat?Grin Some might want more than others...

I don't want anyone touching my food with their gluten infested mitts/utensils.
