Royal Family

TedTheCat · 28/04/2024 22:48

I was chatting to friends earlier today who had mixed opinions on the Royals and whether they support them.

I would prefer not to have a Royal Family, but wonder what other people think.

YABU - Keep the Royal Family

YANBU - Get rid of the Royal Family

What would be your preference to replace the RF?

Leeksinthesun · 28/04/2024 22:50

How exactly do you think you're going to get rid of them? They're fairly benign and do a lot for soft diplomacy, tourism etc. History is our usp in this country, let's not chuck that away too..

orchiddottyback · 28/04/2024 23:03

I’m not sure that would give a very accurate view of mumsnetters opinions as a whole.

I don't think you can claim history as a usp for any one country.

Would they need replaced? We have a government and a prime minister.

Fears · 29/04/2024 01:28

Definitely get rid!

KeyWorker · 29/04/2024 03:21

I fully support them. I love the history, tradition and ceremonies. They do lots of good for the nation, diplomacy, tourism etc. I do support their current practice of slimming down who is a working royal and obviously Prince Andrew needs to be kept out of the way but altogether, the are a good thing for the country.

BMW6 · 29/04/2024 03:24

Gosh, never had a poll on this subject have we 🙄

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/04/2024 03:27

I voted YABU

For not putting this on the right board

Delawear · 29/04/2024 03:30

Get rid. AIBU is the most used board so is appropriate
to get the most accurate impression of the majority view on Mumsnet.

They currently bring in more money then they cost, how would you replace the lost income?

Even if this were true (it's not), I'm dubious that profitability is a sound basis for making decisions on constitutional arrangements.

SpudleyLass · 29/04/2024 07:00

They bring in billions a year so would definitely keep for now.

I do think it should be massively slimmed down though.

No titles except for those directly in line to the throne - so just William's family. And make everybody else pay for their own security, even on engagements.

widgitfidgit · 29/04/2024 07:01

I have no strong feeling about them. Quite happy for them to stay, but I really do think we should update things! Why in this day and age are we bowing to other humans. I could just never do that. Happy to shake hands and be polite

Lisbeth50 · 29/04/2024 07:12

You can't really "get rid" of the Royal Family. They would still exist. You're talking about the monarchy.

There would need to be a viable alternative. The monarch is the Head of State. If there was no monarch, there would need to be a president instead.

There are lots of different models for a president, so it would need to be decided which one we would have first.

There isn't really any political will or need to end the monarchy. There are so many other much more important issues for government to concern itself with. Look at all the efforts expended over Brexit, a totally unnecessary thing. Why on Earth would you want a government focused on getting rid of the monarchy instead of actually running the country?

That would be like asking if you like cats on the litter tray section of mumsnet.

OneWorldly4 · 29/04/2024 08:14

For keeping Andy, get rid of the lot.

skippy67 · 29/04/2024 08:18

I wish we could "get rid", but they're here and they keep multiplying, so we're stuck with them. Unless the peasants revolt, which they won't.

Summerbay23 · 29/04/2024 08:20

I think there is a will to get rid of them, particularly from the under 25s.

We have a prime minister so don’t think we need a president.

I’m definitely in favour of the slimmed down monarchy and think any costs should be extremely highly considered going forward.

Cygnetmad · 29/04/2024 08:22

Wolfpa · 29/04/2024 06:29

That's debatable. Look to France and other countries. Doesn't stop the tourist.

And even if, are you saying as long as something is making money it makes it right? Completely disagree.

x2boys · 29/04/2024 08:39

I'm no royalist and would get rid if i could
They are independently very wealthy so I can hardly see them living on a rundown estate .

CurlewKate · 29/04/2024 08:53

"They bring in billions a year so would definitely keep for now. "

Do y you mean in tourism? France and Spain seek to manage OK with just the buildings....

IsGoodIsDon · 29/04/2024 09:01

I voted to get rid but realistically I’d be happy with it all scaled down. Why so many titles? No titles except the king and the next in line maybe. No one else needs a fancy title. Get rid of all inherited titles in and out of the royal family.
just because you married someone entitled doesn’t mean you should get a title yourself. We don’t need queen consorts. No more princes or princesses or Lady or duchess or countesses.
The class system in this country is so embedded there are still hereditary lords not many but still there are some. No one should be getting extra advantages because they were born with a title and it needs to start from the top.

Spain have a King and Queen and went completely mad last year over the 18th birthday of Princess Leonore , there was acres and acres of coverage of her and her sister . Constant scandals in the wider royal family .

One problem with getting rid of the wider family is the need for people to do visits etc. most people seem unaware that the majority of visits made by the royals are requested by organisations. You write in and request say William and they write back and say he’s busy but you can have Edward or Duchess of Gloucester or whoever . At the moment the offices are over whelmed with requests but no one to offer. I suppose the aim would be that people stop asking , they become less visible and eventually fade away .
