Royal Family

I was chatting to friends earlier today who had mixed opinions on the Royals and whether they support them.

I would prefer not to have a Royal Family, but wonder what other people think.

YABU - Keep the Royal Family

YANBU - Get rid of the Royal Family

"Royal family also produced 2 exceptional sportswomen who won international medals for Britain, having been selected purely on merit."

But they reached the position where they could be selected on merit because of huge privilege and a ton of money. Obviously everyone n that particular sport is privileged and has a ton of money, but it's important to remember that.

As my mum once remarked “You can’t buy brains”. Substitute “sporting prowess”.

@BIossomtoes "As my mum once remarked “You can’t buy brains”. Substitute “sporting prowess"

NO, but in this case, you have to buy the opportunity to find out whether you have the sporting prowess.

The things that make me proud of this island are Shakespeare, Newton, Darwin, Jane Austen, George Orwell, Dickens, Wordsworth, Keats, Blake, etc. I take more pride in David Bowie and the Beatles than I do in the royals. How very Anglocentric

I wonder what would happen to them if they were abolished. People would still be really interested in them, they’d still be celebrities and followed around and photographed. Presumably, they’d live in private homes and have to fund their lifestyles somehow.

They are never going away, lots of people are obsessed by them.

They would go on the after-dinner speaking circuit and write coffee-table books (with the assistance of someone who can actually write, obviously).

Both Downing St and Bute House seem to have revolving doors 🚪. Don't both unpacking the boxes!

Buckingham Palace seems to be reasonably stable, even if Charles is ill, we know who's next and who'll step in should Charles be unfit to meet other dignitaries.

First Minister of Wales doesn’t even have an official residence.

They bring in billions a year so would definitely keep for now.

I do think it should be massively slimmed down though.

No titles except for those directly in line to the throne - so just William's family. And make everybody else pay for their own security, even on engagements.

Why would anyone 'carry out engagements' - also known as doing a days work - at their own expense?

Well that answers the question as to why I don't know what it's called.

Even if this were true (it's not), I'm dubious that profitability is a sound basis for making decisions on constitutional arrangements.

It is true

Howtoeatanelephant · 30/07/2024 06:34

Ask the people who lived through the interregnum about how the country fared without a Monarch
Then look at the other options:
President - America doing great at this aren't they (not)??
Dictator - Yep, great alternative.
Communism - see dictator (above)

Bit difficult. They’re all a bit dead.

@TedTheCat Royal family forum is that way 👉

I think it depends in which chair you are sitting in. To me, it is that way 👈

OonaStubbs · 30/07/2024 06:51

I would rather have the King than some lousy politician as HOS.

Obviously!! But I have a ouija board...😀

CurlewKate · 30/07/2024 10:15

I don't think we can call ourselves a proper democracy without an elected HoS.

Incidentally, France seems to have survived as a tourist destination without a RF.

HumanBurrito · 30/07/2024 10:35

However, I'd prefer King Charles to President Blair, Johnson or any other of the recent Prime Ministers.

Would you really prefer King Andrew on the throne for fifty years over President Major or President Wilson or President Attlee?

You do know what Anglocentric means, right?

cupcaske123 · 30/07/2024 10:41

Get rid off the monarchy and elect a Head of State

(Cue shouts of what you mean Trump/Blair/Boris Johnson 🙄)

Well as King Andrew would create a republic pretty quickly. (Nevermind how many would have died first, 7?)

But if we did become a republic Ireland seems to have the best model for a president

HumanBurrito · 30/07/2024 10:49

Andrew could easily have been the queen's eldest son, and would have been next in line now had Chas and Di not had children. You take what you are given with the monarchy.

Exactly. And if Andrew was next in line, do we think we'd know the truth about him?

OonaStubbs · 30/07/2024 17:53

If Prince Andrew was next in line to throne, he wouldn't be Prince Andrew.

We have enough scummy politicians thank you.

Look at America.

Look at the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Norway etc.
