People who drive 40 everywhere

Sorry this subject has probably been done to death but I let it really annoy me today so just want to get it off my chest 🤣
AIBU to be annoyed at people who drive 40mph everywhere? Following a car home today, I live in a small village of which the road to it varies between 30/60. It isn't a bad road, fairly straight on the 60 bits but I appreciate 60 isn't a target speed but it riles me up when said car is happy to speed in the 30 bits but not willing to go a little faster in the 60 bits.

Anyone else?

Drives me crazy but there’s nothing worse when you get past them, hit 60 and away….….then enter a 30 zone and you see them creeping up behind you. I bloody know what they’re thinking 😂

Purpel · 23/04/2024 18:54

I see this so much, the route I travel a lot is 60 for the most part but decent chunks of 20 too and I see so many people doing 40 ish through both the 20 and the 60.

Allfur · 23/04/2024 18:57

Are you in a rush?

IchWill · 23/04/2024 18:57

Drives me batshit. My hour's drive to and from work is mostly single carriageway, which is bit winding at times, so not many safe places to overtake. Just my luck I get stuck behind someone doing 37 the entire way, when it's perfectly safe to do 60, or even 50.

I sometimes look back exasperated at the huge queue forming behind us, which ends up slowly snaking all the way through the occasional villages we go through.

On the plus side, I get to see the sheep and listen to the radio. 😂

PeRiO · 23/04/2024 18:59

@Allfur i was 🤣 never happens when im not!

What’s wrong with being in a rush? OP has said nothing about speeding (other than the 40mph-ers speeding in a 30!)

Allfur · 23/04/2024 18:57

Are you in a rush?

There's always one.

No, not in a rush, just already factored in a bit of extra time to drive where I'm going and shouldn't have to add in an extra 20 minutes to half an hour on top of that because some twat can't read the road ahead. I also have a lot of single carriageway roads with not many overtaking opportunities.

And if I came up behind a tractor or other slow moving vehicle then it would probably be easier to overtake as they'd only be doing about 20mph tops.

80skid · 23/04/2024 19:25

I didn't know my MiL was out driving today!!!

Yanbu- if they're driving too fast to notice the speed limit is 30, they're driving inappropriately. And they need to get a wriggle on in the 60s too - awful driving, poor observations

ThursdayTomorrow · 23/04/2024 19:26

It’s fine doing 40 in a 60.
Not fine doing 40 in a 30.
So you are half right OP.

That's the best bit! I love that, then booting away from them again at the next 60 bit. They can't keep up.

OP they are indeed infuriating wankers.

Iheartmysmart · 23/04/2024 19:33

I feel your pain. There’s an old boy who I get stuck behind on a Saturday morning if I time my journey wrong. He probably does about 35 mph on a 60 limit road. Not really anywhere to overtake him so I have to sit behind him and seethe. Bloody idiot.

Bigcoatweather · 23/04/2024 19:35

I have similar irritation with people who try to do 60 on our narrow winding roads with umpteen blind corners because the speed limit says it’s okay, so it must be true.

MississippiAF · 23/04/2024 19:36

Yanbu. Plus they stop everytime a car comes in the opposite direction, even though there is plenty room for two cars to pass easily

If the road is clear with good visibility etc it really isn't fine to do 40 in a 60. Everyone should drive to the road conditions etc. Driving too slowly just causes frustration and encourages those behind to take risks to get past you. Driving too slowly is just as dangerous as driving too fast.

You'd fail a driving test for doing 40 in a 60 if it was safe to drive up to the speed limit. "Failure to make adequate progress"/"undue hesitation".

No it absolutely isn't fine to do 40 in a 60 🙄 As stated ⬆️, you'd fail your driving test for doing it so clearly not ok. If you don't feel confident to do 60 on a 60 stretch in normal conditions then you shouldn't be on the road.

Xmasbabyxmas · 23/04/2024 19:45

Ah yes, the mono-speeder. It's like they hit a speed and are too terrified to change it so stick there no matter what. Infuriating. It's the 40 in the 30 that gets me. Like you're so risk averse you can't possibly go over 40 on an empty country road, but fine to sail past a primary school at 40. Mad.

Tangled123 · 23/04/2024 19:45

I think some people always drive at 40mph because they consider 30mph too slow, but 50mph + is too fast. I can understand that. It’s the drivers that are always 10mph under the speed limit no matter what it is that annoy me.

@Allfur so what if OP was in a rush? Not everyone likes driving so want to spend as little time doing it as possible.

Yes! This is how I failed the first time. Twas Captain Slow!

I am not guilty of this now OP so please don't lambast me 😄

YoureAGoodManArthurMorgan · 23/04/2024 19:47

40 in a 60 isn't alright if you're impeding the flow of traffic. If you want to pootle, do it where people can overtake you.

There's a similar road near me which is an important route for getting in and out of the city. There's always some idiot doing 25 on it when it's 40. There are dozens of repeaters saying the speed limit too but bimble bumble brain drivers are oblivious to the fact they've held several cars hostage behind them. Drives me batshit!

LlynTegid · 23/04/2024 19:58

It depends, if they are hiding a medical condition then they should not have a licence. Mind you, not alone in that about a quarter of those who have one should not, some for medical reasons, others for conduct.

WhereIsMyLight · 23/04/2024 20:07

It drives me up the wall. Partly because they think they are safe drivers going well below the 60mph speed limit but failing to realise they are in fact incredibly dangerous because they do not drive to the road conditions. They’d still go down the 60mph road at 40mph when it’s icy and foggy with no lights on.

I think most of them stick at the same speed because they're completely oblivious to road signs, including speed limit signs. Those people are dangerous because they almost certainly won't be noticing all the other kinds of road signs too, i.e. harsh bends, side road junctions, etc etc.

You won’t be saying that when you’re stuck behind someone doing 40 in a 60 and get rear ended by someone who was doing 59 in a 60 who came round the corner and couldn’t slow down in time.

Wooloohooloo · 23/04/2024 20:18

A lot of people don't seem to understand national speed limit signs for single and dual carriageways. Drives me potty.
