Gender assigned at birth

Ketchup100 · 09/04/2024 12:13

Just applied for dd’s 11+ and the online form asked what was my child’s “gender assigned at birth”. AIBU to find this insulting both to my intelligence and to my daughter? She was not assigned a gender at birth. She is biologically female whether or not she chooses to currently follow any particular gender stereotype. Nobody said at her birth “congratulations, your child will like pink and wear makeup”. They simply looked at her genitals and declared that she was (biologically) female, which she is and will always be.

Yes I think this language is dangerous. Sex is observed. Gender is not assigned.

The reason I believe it’s dangerous is because I can see an entire generation are frighteningly ignorant because of the lies they have been told about transwomen. Wherever there is a transwomen on a social media platform, there are so many questions such as, “do you have periods? Can you have a baby? Can you get a uterus transplant and have a baby? Can you breastfeed? Etc etc.

So many young people truly believe there are physical differences between men and transwomen they don’t realise they are the same sex class. The TWAW lie has really taken hold.

Seeline · 09/04/2024 12:23

Is it for a single sex school?

FuckOffTom · 09/04/2024 12:25

YANBU
Someone I know recently completed an online form to have a consultation to get access to a medical abortion from home (the so called ‘pills by post’ scheme) and she had to actually answer the question ‘what sex were you assigned at birth’ as well as answering what her sex is now. For a termination of a pregnancy FFS.

Seeline · 09/04/2024 12:23

Is it for a single sex school?

No, it’s just an application to do a test. Not school specific. The school we intend to apply to is mixed. In any case, they should ask child’s sex, not “gender assigned at birth”.

The world has gone completely batshit crazy.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 09/04/2024 12:28

Doesn't bother me.

Beryls · 09/04/2024 12:28

I'm so sick of all this shit. My workplace now has a menopause group, stating that it is for women AND trans people because then taking hormones is the same as menopause apparently. Also a ridiculous article published on the works intranet about how biology is wrong regarding sex.

This is the civil service. What the fuck has any of that got to do with the job? And it's not like you can publicly disagree because I need my job.

Sorry for the rant I'm just sick of it, years it's been getting worse and I honestly think we need a massive event, like a war or something to prevent this constant naval gazing. The west has clearly had far too much time on it's hands for too long. We obviously need bigger things to worry about.

I'm in such a bad mood today!

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 09/04/2024 12:30

It's a good reminder of how much most people struggle with structured thinking.

YANBU OP

That's absolute gobbledegook. YANBU.

Blackcats7 · 09/04/2024 12:35

I think everybody who believes the truth of basic biology should refuse to answer such questions. Put a line though it and write sex is female.

unpleasantindividual · 09/04/2024 12:36

another new phrase that gives me the Rage, along with bloody shine a light🙄

NO, your sex is what you are born with, there are male and female and humans cannot change sex

nothing is assigned

TheProvincialLady · 09/04/2024 12:38

I want to know the name of the healthcare professional who assigned my gender, since it’s such an important attribute apparently. I want to know what evidence based criteria they used to inform their decision, in line with standard healthcare practice.

CaterhamReconstituted · 09/04/2024 12:38

You are not being unreasonable. This is dangerous political language. There is boy and girl, man and woman, male and female. Nothing is assigned.

MinnieMountain · 09/04/2024 12:41

I read lots of old documents at work. I long for the day when “sex” and “gender” are interchangeable again.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 09/04/2024 12:41

Is there an option for assigned on scan? If its only assigned at birth then it wouldn't be possible to tell before birth. Stupid phrase

It was an online question with male/female responses only. Had it been paper I would have definitely written my thoughts on there!

This language is all over the place these days.

Hopefully the fact that society is waking up to the fact that this language stands for the removal women's rights and for harming children will lead to it being quietly removed over time.

If you feel you can, complain.

I know someone it happened to. Born with ambiguous genitalia (think that was what parent said) due to surgical options it was decided the baby would be assigned female at birth. She now identifies as lesbian but is interested in transitioning. I don't know if they would do that now, it was a few years back.

I assume that is rare.

I thought this might be useful for your thread OP

It's time (well overdue) to stop saying "assigned at birth". The medical establishment needs to get back to biological reality. Alan Sokal & Richard Dawkins in the Boston Globe. Archived link below

https://archive.is/5vNbq

"A baby’s name is assigned at birth; no one doubts that. But a baby’s sex is not “assigned”; it is determined at conception & is then observed at birth..."

This was also interesting.

"It is never justified to distort the facts in the service of a social or political cause, no matter how just. If the cause is truly just, then it can be defended in full acceptance of the facts about the real world."

"And when an organization that proclaims itself scientific distorts the scientific facts in the service of a social cause, it undermines not only its own credibility but that of science generally. How can the public be expected to trust the medical establishment’s declarations on other controversial issues, such as vaccines — issues on which the medical consensus is indeed correct — when it has so visibly and blatantly misstated the facts about something so simple as sex?"

It doesn't bother me too much and I don't tend to rant about this sort of thing - but maybe I should!

Because it is possibly just one more step in the slippery slope of absolute nonsense. When you look at all the problems we have right now - accessing care, support, medical help on the NHS, getting assessments for the mountains of kids who need one for SEN, yet the impetus is instead upon this? I've changed my view a little recently and become less woke like I guess.

I've always been a lefty and of the live and let live mentality but it is going way too far really. I have listened to Douglas Murray recently and think he is the most articulate speaker who challenges all this nonsense without appearing to me to be prejudice.

So after writing all that, I'm not too bothered on a personal level but it is absolute nonsense really.

Now if there is an obvious medical condition, they will generally do the tests and scans to establish which condition it is. And the parents will know whether their child is male or female. Because a great deal is now known about the conditions and most of them are sex specific.

bakewellbride · 09/04/2024 12:52

It is ridiculous. My daughters nursery application form ask for her 'gender' it's infuriating

0.0018% of humans have DSDs, so yes extremely rare. And each and every one of those people are either male or female, all DSDs only affect either males or females. If you actually know someone who was assigned a sex you are either extremely old (no offence) or are talking about someone born in a remote part of the developing world. Hospitals can and do test chromosomes etc in the extremely few cases of babies with ambiguous genitals, and have done for many years.

It is extremely disrespectful of gender ideologues to take the rare medical condition of others and use them to prop up their beliefs.

1stWorldProblems · 09/04/2024 12:54

Legally I believe they can only ask for your Sex (as a protected characteristic). Schools are not required to collect Gender info. Do complain if you can. I particularly dislike compulsory online forms.

I work in a school & have complained to the DfE as even they have been asking us to collect Gender rather than Sex info for primary school children. This sort of linguistic creep undermines the law
