I tried and failed to find a previous thread 😅. Aibu to ask for your recommendations for cover songs that are better than the original? One of mines is Miley Cyrus, Just Like A Prayer. It gives me goosebumps, not everyones cup of tea but I love it.

When You Were Mine Cyndi Lauper, it's originally a Prince song.

murasaki · 31/03/2024 23:17

Johnny Cash 'hurt' much prefer it to Nine Inch Nails. Although I do like that too, just not as much.

Same here.

Also Tainted Hate Soft Cell version.

Miley Cyrus’s recent covers are fantastic. Zombie is my favourite.

maudelovesharold · 31/03/2024 23:21

Very, very different, but at least as good as the 60s original by Them (Van Morrison) - Gloria by Patti Smith.

She's incredibly talented and her voice is beautiful . I think because she was a Disney star she doesn't get the credit she deserves but I think she's amazing and her voice really does give me goosebumps. Maybe it's because I'm 33 and loved Hannah Montana in my younger years 😅.

I love the White Buffalo covering The Highwaymen's (Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson) The Highwayman song. He has such a great voice.

brokenbox · 31/03/2024 23:31

Luke Burr covering Bob Marley - is this love

meganorks · 31/03/2024 23:35

Adele Make you feel my love. Not a particular Adele fan but I love that song

I really like Harry Stiles' live lounge of The Chain but I don't think it's better than the original, just different.

I'm sure there are more but I can't think now you've asked!

Scampuss · 31/03/2024 23:38

Nirvana's The man who sold the world

Johnny Cash's Personal jesus

Mumof2NDers · 31/03/2024 23:42

Disturbed. Sound of Silence. Saw them play it live at Download. Goosebumps!!!

AmaryllisChorus · 31/03/2024 23:43

Pet Shop Boys - you were always on my mind. They get the insincerity of it perfectly.

WrenNatsworthy · 31/03/2024 23:44

My first thought was Hurt by Johnny Cash.

I love him so very much - and that one makes me cry.

There's a band I loved in the 90s called Faith Over Reason who did the most beautiful cover of Nick Drake's Northern Sky.

Lastly, The Sundays cover of Wild Horses by The Stones. So beautiful.

She's definitely won a whole new fanbase. I am too old to have watched HM, but I saw Miley at Glastonbury 2019 and I was totally blown away. I've been a huge fan ever since.

Duran Duran - Make Me Smile

Showing my age!

NervousButExcited · 31/03/2024 23:49

Bit obvious and clichéd maybe but I love Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah

MistyGreenAndBlue · 31/03/2024 23:51

Speedway's version of Genie in a Bottle. Far superior to the ORIGINAL IMO

Spiderbait - Ghostriders.

Ah but it is a classic. Gorgeous.

FinanceLPlates · 31/03/2024 23:53

Amy Winehouse Valerie
Johnny Cash Wichita Lineman
Nina Simone Here comes the sun

rollerskatie · 31/03/2024 23:54

There are two great covers of Dolly Parton’s Jolene - one by White Stripes and one by Queen Adreena.

Furrydogmum · 31/03/2024 23:57

The Killers - Romeo and Juliet.

MoonlightMedicine · 31/03/2024 23:57

Suede's version of Brass in Pocket

MarmitePizza · 31/03/2024 23:57

Wherever I Lay My Hat by Paul Young. I also really like Hue and Cry’s version of The Man With The Child in His Eyes, but I suspect that’s not a popular opinion (I love the original of course though).

ThurstonArmbrister · 01/04/2024 00:02

Bob Dylan's original All Along The Watchtower is putrid in comparison with Hendrix's version.

Having been a 90's teenager I was astonished to discover recently that Step On is actually a cover 😲
