I tried and failed to find a previous thread 😅. Aibu to ask for your recommendations for cover songs that are better than the original? One of mines is Miley Cyrus, Just Like A Prayer. It gives me goosebumps, not everyones cup of tea but I love it.

I love The Futureheads version of Hounds of Love.

Not better than the original, but Placebo - Running up that Hill
Nirvana - The Man who sold the world

Placebo's cover version of "Running up that Hill" by Kate Bush. I original is fantastic of course but there's just something about the cover version that sends shivers up my spine. Brian Molko's voice captures the haunting spirit of the song perfectly. Seeing them do it live takes it to another level.

Billy swans version of Elvis don't be cruel. Johnny cash hurt as many other say too. Jeff Buckley hallelujah

There are a rock band called Our Last Night who do loads of covers - they do a rock version of Surface pressure from Encanto and it’s awesome. The rock vibe really gives it oomph.

Not a cover as such but a re imagined version… Falling in Reverse, Last Resort. Much better than Papa Roach

I think Bastille's MTV Unplugged version of "Killing me Softly" is the best of the 4 versions I've heard. (Roberta Flack's - that most people think of as the original - was also a cover.)

It is wonderful but I wouldn't say better than the original.

Nothing compares 2U by Sinead O'Connor.
Handbags and glad rags: both the Rod Stewart and Stereophonics versions surpass the original imo.
War Pigs: I prefer Faith No More's version to the original ( and accept that to most people, including DH, this is sacrilege).

Bryan Ferry's version of Jealous Guy far outweighs John Lennon's in every single way.

Lennon's original sounds weak, weedy and lacking.

They did a brilliant cover of iron maidens phantom of the opera as well
