To not be excited about light nights and summer?

hermithead · 31/03/2024 19:24

I keep seeing posts on SM about how the light nights are here, and the better weather.

I know this is obviously preferred by a lot of people.

Personally, I'm feeling a little like I'll need to force myself to embrace that.

I've been enjoying going out a walk in the dark, knowing I'll bump into few people and that I can hide under heavy coat and hat.

It's more acceptable to stay home for days on end in the winter, and I'm all for that.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it when I do get out and socialise, etc, but at the moment I'm feeling like it's something I'll need to really gear up to.

Am I weird? Or are there others like me?

OP posts:

I was definitely like that when I was younger but I've embraced summer as I've aged. I think it's needing the sun on my old lady bones. Saying that, first night of the lighter evenings and I defiantly closed the curtains at 5pm and lit all the candles and got under my blanket.

GoodnightAdeline · 31/03/2024 19:30

Of course there are others like you, this website is where they hang out. Everyone on here loves lockdowns/winter/rain/solitutude, and dislikes people/summer/light.

Gingernurt88 · 31/03/2024 19:32

I'm a bit of both. I've enjoyed the dark evenings running round our village not bumping into a soul. Now I'll have to dodge the unruly dogs and show my sweaty face to people I recognise

I prefer light mornings.

3BellyProblem · 31/03/2024 19:42

I’ve had periods of my life where I’ve felt like that. I preferred being cosy indoors and the lack of pressure to be social in the darker months.

I’ve grown to appreciate the lighter months, though. I find it easier to wake up when it’s light in the mornings and my evening after work feels longer and full of possibilities (that aren’t watching tv in the sofa!).

I think the trick with the seasons is to find the positives in each one and embrace them.

CountryMumof4 · 31/03/2024 19:45

I'm completely with you OP, although I do prefer commuting in the daylight. I did enjoy a nice walk with the dog in the sun today though, so it's not all bad. I just need to crack on with sorting black out blinds/curtains for the wee ones again - they're adamant it can't possibly be bedtime when it's daylight.

OhmygodDont · 31/03/2024 19:47

Noooo I’m happy about it. It been growing season is coming get those fruits and veggies coming up fresh in the garden.

I do like dark for sleep though but I find my body just sets me on winter or summer modes for sleeping. Wake me at 5am in winter and I’ll be an angry wasp 5am summer sun and it’s all cool.

Mushroo · 31/03/2024 19:50

I agree. I like the summer evenings but I hate all the noise that comes with it.

Loud neighbours hanging out in the garden really late, lawnmowers stupidly early. I love the peace and quiet of winter.

LondonPleaseButJustForOneDay · 31/03/2024 19:50

I absolutely love the dark nights, they are so cozy. Hate light nights, it's harder to sleep and I always feel like everyone is living a more exciting and fulfilling life than I am. When the sky is still bright at 8pm the world just seems bigger and so much scarier.

I do however love the light mornings and going out into the woods for a 6am stroll so I console myself with that.

But I'm always relieved when summer is over.

sanityisamyth · 31/03/2024 19:52

For the first time in months I've actually had any motivation to do anything! I bloody hate winter, darkness, rain and cold. Bring on more of spring and summer!

DappledThings · 31/03/2024 19:52

I'm with you. I hate the clocks changing in this direction and the slow creep to it being light far too late.

I would ditch BST altogether if I could.

Icantbedoingwithit · 31/03/2024 19:53

Dreading the light nights but I know I am in the minority. Dreading it!

romany4 · 31/03/2024 19:56

I hate the light mornings and evenings. I can't sleep and there's too much noise.
All I heard on Saturday were lawnmowers, people pressure washing their decking and neighbours bloody music!

When it's Winter, it's dark and quiet.
I'm also menopausal and too hot. I'm dreading the warmer weather

unlikelychump · 31/03/2024 19:56

We just played badminton outside in the first /light evening (camping). Amazing.

SecondHandFurniture · 31/03/2024 19:56

This bit's ok - pale watery sunlight, tulips and daffodils, birdsong, etc.

Then it turns shit. Sweaty nights with a fan and bedroom full of bugs. Washing your bras after every wear. Car windows open blasting crap RnB. Sweaty men in supermarket queues. And, in the SW, endless traffic.

Quizine · 31/03/2024 19:56

I think it depends on your personality. If, like me you are happy in your own company most of the time, then Winter is great for just doing things on your own, while others are roasting themselves under a heated blanket or freezing to death!

Summer can bring feelings of dread to some especially when it is EXPECTED that you will be oh so sociable and go to every BBQ and excuse for a piss up in the garden that's available. Summer can also highlight the fact that some people are lonely or alone, when looking at others out and about with family, kids, granny, dogs the lot.

It is easier to hide away in the Winter, not so easy in Summer and that doesn't suit everyone.

I both like and dislike parts of Winter and Summer myself.

Bootskates · 31/03/2024 19:58

I love the longer spring and summer days because it gets you down leaving for work in the dark and coming home in the dark so i do get a boost when its still light at 7pm. Same with the first few blue skies.

I just don't like the pressure of trying not to "waste" nice sunny days. Love the cosy winter days when it feels more acceptable to laze around under a blanket.

BeretRaspberry · 31/03/2024 19:59

I’m with you OP. Heat and sunshine knock me sick so it’s hell for me when it gets towards summer. I don’t so much mind this time of year when it’s not too hot and can sit outside for a bit in the fresh air.

I think it’s worse for us wintery people because people think you’re bonkers for not liking summer.

I’d rather be sat inside than outside when it’s too hot and I get comments suggesting there’s something wrong with me. I’m investing in air con in our house this year because it affects me that much!

Oh yes. And just about everyone's an introvert as well.

ilovesooty · 31/03/2024 19:59

Oh yes. And just about everyone's an introvert as well.

I hate winter and people. A sunshine loving introvert. I want to be alone in my garden 😂

Bournetilly · 31/03/2024 20:01

I used to be the same when I could stay at home / relax but now I have young DC I’m looking forward to the weather being warmer and being able to take them outside / more places. I’m sick of the soft play. I don’t like it when it’s too hot though, today has been lovely where I live.

I still like the dark nights / cold, cozy weather but after Christmas I get a bit fed up of it and it drags on. Autumn is my favourite.

EatCrow · 31/03/2024 20:04

I love summer or the idea of it. I miss the warmth and sunshine. And light. I love nature and birdsong. But things are different now. I welcome the anonymity of winter but dread it at the same time. I think I agree Op but I’m all mixed up nowadays.

PassingStranger · 31/03/2024 20:12

Yabu, we've had no spring so far, we are fed up of rain and cold.

We want to feel warmth on our bodies.

Bring it on.

Icantbedoingwithit · 31/03/2024 20:25

By the you are not being unreasonable, you simply have a preference but that enrages people on here for some reason 😂

Raggydollz · 31/03/2024 20:33

I feel almost depressed at the warm, light long nights coming.. I'm a winter lass, cosy dark nights, warm clothes.. roll on October
