To not be excited about light nights and summer?

I keep seeing posts on SM about how the light nights are here, and the better weather.

I know this is obviously preferred by a lot of people.

Personally, I'm feeling a little like I'll need to force myself to embrace that.

I've been enjoying going out a walk in the dark, knowing I'll bump into few people and that I can hide under heavy coat and hat.

It's more acceptable to stay home for days on end in the winter, and I'm all for that.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it when I do get out and socialise, etc, but at the moment I'm feeling like it's something I'll need to really gear up to.

Am I weird? Or are there others like me?

I always love the change, I look forward to Autumn and then by the time I’m going through Winter I start to look forward to Spring.

icelolly12 · 31/03/2024 20:47

It's been dire for five months with rainand grey weather. Each to their own but I need some sunshine and love long nights where I can have a life after work, and everyone I know irl feels the same

PullUpTheDrawbridge · 31/03/2024 20:49

I know what you mean. I feel like i have to drag myself into the light. As my natural inclination is to hunker down, light the fire, draw the curtains etc but im telling myself the obligation to socialise is in my head and on a practical level it just means more time on the garden.

User1786 · 31/03/2024 20:52

I do know what you mean but I’m ready for a change. This winter has been so long and wet and I’ll enjoy lower heating bills! I do love the light evenings but not the early sunrise. Can’t have it all I guess!

I hate the summer! Already can't wait for the clocks to change back and have dark mornings and early dark nights

Read an interesting article recently about suicide rates in Finland, some of the highest in the world.
Was intrigued to learn that rates are far higher in the lighter months and not in winter as one might assume.
Will see if I can find it.

Please don't link that here, if you don't mind.

This time of year is lovely. I adore the blossom coming out and the glorious feeling of being contentedly warm when outside. The sunshine is watery and gentle and everything feels fresh. But I HATE the clocks going forward because that means summer, and its associated heat, sweat and headaches, is imminent.

I can manage June and part of July but beyond that I tend to feel exhausted, parched and fed up. August is just a month to endure before autumn. The first days of autumn are joyful because I start to feel a bit more alive again.

DH loves summer! He cannot understand me at all!

picolosmum · 31/03/2024 21:43

It’s not weird, I get nervous too but that’s mainly body and image related as summer means shorts T-shirts etc not hiding in sweaters and leggings! I also get bad social anxiety and understand your need to build up again xx

AntonFeckoff · 31/03/2024 21:47

YANBU. I struggle with depression every spring. I just want to hibernate until autumn.

Foxlover46 · 31/03/2024 21:48

I love winter , autumn because similar to you I like walking the dogs in the dark at night , not having to be bumping into other people etc , but a lot of me not loving summer I think is due to body confidence and that only. I mean I don't like heatwaves etc but for the work I do with the horses and dogs it's nicer to see the sun than the constant rain and mud , I do love spring though the baby animals and new blooms etc

Of course there are others like you, this website is where they hang out. Everyone on here loves lockdowns/winter/rain/solitutude, and dislikes people/summer/light.

I feel seen Grin

I quite like winter and nights in. Summer is for younger folk.

I love getting home from work and there's still hours of daylight left. Bring on the light nights.

CB2611 · 31/03/2024 22:02

Summer negative nelly here..... I hate summer clothes, I hate evenings feeling like afternoons when really I want to close my curtains and put my pyjamas on but even 8pm feels too soon for that. I love the cosiness of winter and putting my pyjamas on the minute I get home from work. Wearing jumpers and boots.

I hate being cold though 😂

RedMark · 31/03/2024 22:03

I used to be like this. Such a winter person. Now I have two small children and can't wait for spring and summer this year. We've just gone through a winter of illness hell. So hoping for less viruses and being able to get out with them makes life easier..

Caravaggiouch · 31/03/2024 22:04

I find summer harder work in a lot of ways. More pressure to always be doing stuff and be out. I just want to wear a nice coat and a nice pair of boots over my usual scruffy clothes, not have to arse about putting actual outfits together.

Each to their own op many people feel depressed in the winter and the light helps them to feel more upbeat. As a pp said, try to find the positives.

What why? I’m 50. I love spring and summer. I’ve been counting down till the clocks went forward, constantly commenting on when it gets dark, yesterday was off to the garden centre to buy tomato plants and strawberry plants, to bring on in the green house. And Today power washed the patio.

i love it, meals outside, sitting outside with friends, drinking wine, listening to music, chatting, lighter clothes, no heating on.

and the best part is wandering round the garden and seeing everything starting to bud and bloom. Everything springing back to life. It’s so joyous.

at what age am I supposed to stop enjoying that and stay inside.?

Edited

I do try and find the positives.

But now I'm in considering that summer is hard for some in the same way that winter is hard for others.

But I feel there's less recognition of that.

Yes I think you’re right in that it’s more acceptable to be down about the winter. Maybe the lighter mornings will mean you can get out before people are up and enjoy the peace in a safer way. I often feel happier to stay home in the summer as I can use my garden. 🪴

BeeandG · 31/03/2024 22:33

I've been looking forward to the lighter nights for weeks. Spring is joyful. The sunshine makes me feel happier and more motivated. We have very busy lives and the longer days, warmer weather and time outside make it all more manageable.
