To not be excited about light nights and summer?

hermithead · 31/03/2024 19:24

I keep seeing posts on SM about how the light nights are here, and the better weather.

I know this is obviously preferred by a lot of people.

Personally, I'm feeling a little like I'll need to force myself to embrace that.

I've been enjoying going out a walk in the dark, knowing I'll bump into few people and that I can hide under heavy coat and hat.

It's more acceptable to stay home for days on end in the winter, and I'm all for that.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it when I do get out and socialise, etc, but at the moment I'm feeling like it's something I'll need to really gear up to.

Am I weird? Or are there others like me?

As I said upthread it’s a real first world problem to grumble about too much light ffs.

I find it so depressing on here these days, life is hard for everyone and I’ve got sympathy for those posting about rising costs or not being able to afford the basics - real problems in other words. But the increasing number of people who are too special to cope with normal life do my head in 🤦🏻

Grumbling about something hardly makes someone unable to cope with normal life. A few people have expressed a mild grumble and a preference. Far less vociferously than those who complain about not getting enough summer

It’s not a first world problem to know that you are about to spend a good 5 months unbearably uncomfortable due to hot flushes intensified by hot weather and a culture that doesn’t give a flying fuck and rarely accommodates for menopause symptoms

Delatron · 03/04/2024 16:41

When have we ever had 5 months of unbearably hot weather? Definitely not in this country.

It is if you suffer from persistent hot flushes

BigPandaTinyDragon · 03/04/2024 16:52

@YaMuvva that’s not a weather/climate problem then, I hope you can get some support - I was under the impression menopause symptoms are taken much more seriously these days

Ok then that’s very individual if you can’t cope with anything over 15 degrees and find it unbearably hot. I’m in the same phase but I’d never decide it was unbearably hot out at 15 and over.

Then get help for them. If you're having persistent hot flushes then you're also getting them in winter time. As from what I gather hot flushes aren't season dependent.

Im actually at a loss at having to explain this, as even my 7yo understand but here goes..

Hot flushes are easier to cope with when it’s cold indoors and outdoors.

When it’s even just warm, they become unbearable as there’s nowhere to go to cool down.

I mean it’s not rocket science. I was simply responding to the person saying disliking heat is a first world problem, when it’s really not for many people.

Sadly not always. You would not believe how hard it is to get HRT especially when you start peri menopause early. I could write a full rant about it but that’s another thread for another day

I hate the ‘cosy’ love on here. Haven’t you been all cosy and snuggled up for the last 6 months? Surely everyone wants a change. But apparently not. They just want to fester under a blanket in the dark indefinitely.

Yep

Auburngal · 03/04/2024 17:53

Two things I dread about summer

  1. More kids mucking about at work
  2. A couple of houses at the back of me think its OK to play awful music (imo) to 2am. One of the households and guests they sing so badly that I rather listen to cats hissing to each other than their singing. Those households and their guests have zero consideration to those who work early shifts, the elderly - the bad singing house have elderly people living opposite them. Know this as a friend's 90 year aunt lives in one of these houses.
IloveAslan · 03/04/2024 21:01

Never have I met anyone in real life who has said ‘oh I’m loving this endless rain and cold, really hope it carries on all summer. Only on Mumsnet.

I was just about to write that never have I met anyone in real life who has said "oh I'm loving the early dark because I can't stand the light". I have heard a few people say they quite like winter, and I know some people don't enjoy the longer summer evenings due to kids not wanting to go to bed, but I have never, in my almost 65 years, heard one person say they hate the light. Nor have I ever heard anyone say they love endless rain. I was trying to work out if it was a UK thing or a MN thing 🤔

Don't like July with heat over 22 degrees as work and home both get too hot plus am peri now...

Just shows how different we all are. It's autumn here and we are moaning because the temperature should still be in the twenties and it has been lower for weeks, and we didn't have enough 30+ degrees over summer.

RampantIvy · 03/04/2024 21:04

To be fair, I haven't seen many winter lovers on here saying how much they are enjoying all the rain. A lot of them have pets, and the endless mud and having to wash their dog after every walk is getting even the most ardent winters lovers down. It has been a nightmare for horse owners as well.

Yep. I've only worked for 4 hours this week, and during that time I met people coming in for free food because they can't afford to feed their families, and an elderly man looking for a sheet of plastic to cover himself with while he slept rough. No sympathy at all for people who, as you so rightly said, are too special to cope with normal life.

DrCoconut · 03/04/2024 21:14

I think the people who talk about cosy evenings, relaxing with a book etc don't work evenings or have children with additional needs who need to be exercised like puppies. Dark and icy journeys home from work and being trapped in the house from 4pm rather than down at the park burning off energy on non working evenings is not fun. The kids sleep so much better in summer, I sometimes even get to bed by 11 myself which is better for me than being up and down half the night as happens when everyone has too much pent up energy. I am really over winter weather now and really hoping for a good summer after the last couple of years, last year especially.

Mushroo · 31/03/2024 19:50

I agree. I like the summer evenings but I hate all the noise that comes with it.

Loud neighbours hanging out in the garden really late, lawnmowers stupidly early. I love the peace and quiet of winter.

I could have written your post!

NewYearTimeToChange · 03/04/2024 21:18

@Hoglet70 totally with you on this. Now I’m in my fifties I look forward to feeling the sun on my achy body where I used to dread hot weather. Lighter evenings mean I might stay awake past 9pm too. It won’t be long before it’s too hot probably but this bit is lovely.

Abracadabra12345 · 03/04/2024 21:25

flapjackfairy · 01/04/2024 08:42

@JJathome
I remember hearing an African preacher at church saying that where he comes from it gets light at 6 am and dark at 6pm all year round and consequently he finds the changing seasons v strange and I think that would be the perfect scenario ! I could embrace the heat and summer days more fully if I knew I was going to have a proper dark evening to look forward to even if it was still hot outside .and of course it would solve sleep issue.

Edited

Oooh I'm with you there! Remember how warm October was? I could cope with that because it got dark earlier than in summer

I hate summer. I’m near London and we have had some disgusting heat waves over the past few years.
I don’t mind spring but I despise summer

Yes, the same

I don’t see a lot of folks though saying I just love being out in the pissing rain, cold and dark. More folks seem to be saying they love it as they can shut their curtains, shut the world out, and stay home.

but I have never, in my almost 65 years, heard one person say they hate the light

When do you think that would ever come up in conversation? Literally only my closest family and a couple of close friends know about my aversion to bright light. It's not something I broadcast because for one, why would it be of any interest to anyone? and two, I don't need to give people any more reasons to believe I'm strange!

So when people talk about the "glorious weather" and the "lovely" light evenings. I smile and nod. A bit like how when you ask how someone is, they just say "fine" even if their life is falling apart! No one wants to know how you really feel.

Just surprised about your username!

I hear you @hermithead .

All seasons have their wonders, but I think, January and February have their merits, unlike most people!

I live near the sea and have I am sure once the sun comes it will be nice to take a dip.

However, I did a couple of coastal walks and beach walks at dusk in the coolness of February, and it was lovely and quiet and kind of magical as well. Also without loads of screaming holiday makers😱

Well it's come up in converstation on here! Honestly, people do talk about the seasons, and what they like about them so I'm sure if anyone hated bright light they would say. I'm not in the UK, maybe people just talk more honestly about things here. If someone mentions heat or cold and the person they are talking to doesn't like it then they generally say so (and, believe it or not, some people don't just say "fine" when asked how they are!).
