How to appear rich?

happyasharry · 31/03/2024 17:58

I know this is crazy and it's a million miles away from how I normally think but I have a reunion coming up soon and I don't want to be the 'poor' one.
We have a 3 bed semi, a 3 year old Volvo and we're really strapped at the moment. I have a college reunion soon and most of my friends have travelled the globe, found rich spouses and live the dream.
Anyway, for one night only I want to appear like them. I love my life and I am proud of what we have achieved as a family but this is playing on my mind. Any idea how I can achieve this and just fit in a bit?

Don't. They will know, you'll be embarrassed. If you really think they will judge, don't go!

Notimeforaname · 31/03/2024 18:01

Watch Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. All the tips you need there 🤣 Just get a power suit and say you invented something.

Nicetobenice67 · 31/03/2024 18:02

Don’t try to be something your not

StarlightLime · 31/03/2024 18:03

Don't think you can fake it, op.

JJathome · 31/03/2024 18:04

dont try to do this op you can’t fake it, what you going to do turn up and lie? If you are actually proud then be honest.

TeaKitten · 31/03/2024 18:04

If they are as rich as you say they will no you are faking it. Just own it and be happy and confident with your life.

SheepAndSword · 31/03/2024 18:05

In my experience people don't ask questions like this at reunions - just wear a nice outfit and say you're happy and content!

CurlewKate · 31/03/2024 18:05

If marrying a rich spouse is the height of their ambition then why would you want to be like them?

Queijo · 31/03/2024 18:05

The richest people I know legit do not give af what they wear, what they drive and don’t care what people think of them.

So my advice would be stick an old battered Barbour over your outfit and exude confidence because at the end of the day what these people think of you won’t change anything about your life.

Nicetobenice67 · 31/03/2024 18:06

Just because there are rich doesn’t make them better than you …it’s shallow to fake it you won’t feel happy with yourself ..if there is a problem it’s there problem

She never said it was the height of their ambition?

User364837 · 31/03/2024 18:06

Rich classy people don’t always tend to flaunt it, so how would they know? Unless you get talking about jobs, spouses job, houses or cars. But even then how would they know if you’d had a large inheritance or not?

Viviennemary · 31/03/2024 18:06

Just don't bother. Quite a lot of fairly well off people are completely tight and don't spend a penny if they can help it.

Avatartar · 31/03/2024 18:06

just don’t - being healthy and truly happy with your life partner etc will radiate from you. So many people are false either with what they’ve done to their bodies or who they are trying to be bank account wise. Maybe be hire an outfit, otherwise be neat nails, hair not too much of anything make up or perfume and be clean, smile a lot and enjoy. Don’t get really drunk. Success doesn’t = rich

You will look like a twat if you do this, the poster has been reading too much jilly cooper. Wealthy people do not do this in reality.

If this were true you wouldn't want to hide it.

My parents are millionaires and are exactly like this 😂

MiddleParking · 31/03/2024 18:09

In the astronomically unlikely event anyone gave a shit about their former schoolmate’s Volvo, they’d probably think of a three year old one as relatively new.

Readytoevolve · 31/03/2024 18:09

Rich is loud,
Wealth is silent.
Broke is flashy

Less is more.
Don’t try, stay classy.

🤣 love that movie. But really OP just be yourself, if they look down on you then fuck them🤨

PermanentTemporary · 31/03/2024 18:09

I'd go very minimalist and go for a clean, solid look.

Go to bed earlier than usual for at least a fortnight.

Think posture. Do the 'thread pulling you up from the crown of your head' thing. Set your core. Do some pilates off YouTube to improve it further.

Can you spring for a good haircut? Go somewhere more expensive than you normally would if youre not 100% happy with your current one. I'm not brilliant at hair product stuff but others will be - smooth and shiny is your goal.

Do you have a lipstick you really like? The one that works for me is Bare Pop by Clinique - I get compliments when I wear it. And are you good at shaping eyebrows? Or would a friend help you with that? I'd do lipstick, mascara and nothing else. I might visit the testers and swipe a bit of really expensive moisturiser just beforehand. Maybe a spritz of a classic perfume- Miss Dior would be mine.

Maybe hire an outfit? Or borrow? If you have a reasonable pair of dark trousers that fit well, hire or borrow a posh shirt and an interesting jacket (maybe a separate thread).

A single substantial ring or bracelet in a precious metal would be the way I would go, or a big plastic cuff can work - pop art kind of vibe.

Comedycook · 31/03/2024 18:10

Am I the only one who thinks a three year old car is still virtually new?

JJathome · 31/03/2024 18:10

Queijo · 31/03/2024 18:08

My parents are millionaires and are exactly like this 😂

They go to evening events dressed up in evening attire, with old Barbour jackets on? Sure they do. I move in some very wealthy circles and no one does this.

GreatGateauxsby · 31/03/2024 18:11

I don’t agree “they will know” 🙄
this is up there with old money are all lovely benevolent sorts and have “whispering” money while scummy new money are vulgar rude trash whose money “shouts” 🥴

  • rent an amazing outfit
  • get your hair and make up professionally done
  • get some amazing jewellery
  • keep the backstory simple, my husband and I run a business it’s done quite well.
  • watch Romy and Michelle!!!!!

crack on with your fantasy life 🙌
