How to appear rich?

happyasharry · 31/03/2024 17:58

I know this is crazy and it's a million miles away from how I normally think but I have a reunion coming up soon and I don't want to be the 'poor' one.
We have a 3 bed semi, a 3 year old Volvo and we're really strapped at the moment. I have a college reunion soon and most of my friends have travelled the globe, found rich spouses and live the dream.
Anyway, for one night only I want to appear like them. I love my life and I am proud of what we have achieved as a family but this is playing on my mind. Any idea how I can achieve this and just fit in a bit?

My friend is far from tight, but not 'in your face' with it either. Very lovely people.

They’re understated. I suppose tight was a bit harsh. What I meant is they can be careful with money - one older man married a much younger woman, had 4 boys, sold his Cheyne walk house (mostly as it had loads of off street parking space) bought one abroad and sent his boys all to Charterhouse. So of course it was a bit tricky financially especially when the boys were younger and they lived in Chelsea.

I love my life and I am proud of what we have achieved as a family

So show them that.

If you love your life and are proud of your family, why would you want to pretend to he something you're not?

BurgerBuns · 31/03/2024 19:15

3 year old Volvo sounds new to me 😁

tartlets · 31/03/2024 19:15

@nojudge because turning up in a muddy ridgeline smock and 'seen better days' boots tends to put people off socialising with you at a posh event Wink it's not a conscious effort, I have the accent from school days- I don't rent outfits, cars or talk about my fictional wealth- however people judge on appearances and we all want to be seen to fit in on some level hence wearing appropriate outfits for the occasion.

theduchessofspork · 31/03/2024 19:15

People mostly take other people at face value, if you present as happy and fairly fulfilled then that’s how people will see you. No one is going to get into what you earn or how many bedrooms you have. For sure hire a dress because you’ll get a better one.

OMGitsnotgood · 31/03/2024 19:17

Talk to people about how happy and content you are. THAT is success.

I think this is a bit granny cruise wear, I’m in my 50s and wouldn’t wear it.

Rent something nice.

juniorspesh · 31/03/2024 19:23

I’ve got one of those One Hundred Stars kimonos and I don’t think they’re posh because every time I’ve worn it down the pub some other 40-50 year old woman comes up to me and says “ha ha! I’ve got that at home!”

Taxidriverinfront · 31/03/2024 19:24

If you darn a jumper you could go as old money.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/03/2024 19:24

Look poor.
Speak posh.
Act entitled.

DanielGault · 31/03/2024 19:28

Wax jacket?

JJathome · 31/03/2024 18:07

You will look like a twat if you do this, the poster has been reading too much jilly cooper. Wealthy people do not do this in reality.

have you looked at Warren buffet lately?

I think it really depends person to person.

some care a lot, some care a little and some don't give a toss.

people with money are just people in the end of the day

ReadingStruggles · 31/03/2024 19:44

I met with a friend recently who has done well for herself. Good haircut, nice makeup, well cut clothes and put together. That's all you need!

I am a povvo by comparison (I'm not but am very ordinary financially). She's a friend, we don't talk about money. I talk about our holiday to wales, she talks about hers to Dubai. Children, jobs, worries and ordinary chit chat. It's not a competition 🤷‍♀️

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 31/03/2024 19:47

Just be you. You sound happy.....half of them might not be! Social media is very deceiving.....

Coconutter24 · 31/03/2024 19:48

”I love my life and I am proud of what we have achieved as a family”……

Yet here you are asking for advice on how to fool others into thinking you’re rich. If you’re so proud and love your life why are you trying to appear bigger and better to people who you haven’t seen in years?

TurnTheTap · 31/03/2024 19:57

Sorry, is a three bed semi and a three year old car considered poor these days?

I must be in the gutter

CagneyAndLazy · 31/03/2024 19:59

What's the "tell them you invented Post-Its" skit?

Is it a joke from a film or something?

Surely unless they're all ancient they'll have been using Post-Its since school, and OP is the same age.

Lanterns12828 · 31/03/2024 20:12

They will probably be able to tell you are faking it.

ohthejoys21 · 31/03/2024 20:16

Avatartar · 31/03/2024 18:06

just don’t - being healthy and truly happy with your life partner etc will radiate from you. So many people are false either with what they’ve done to their bodies or who they are trying to be bank account wise. Maybe be hire an outfit, otherwise be neat nails, hair not too much of anything make up or perfume and be clean, smile a lot and enjoy. Don’t get really drunk. Success doesn’t = rich

This 💯

Definitely.

Comedycook · 31/03/2024 18:10

Am I the only one who thinks a three year old car is still virtually new?

Me too! I can’t imagine owning such a new car; I’d assume you were rich just for this TBH 😂

bonzaitree · 31/03/2024 20:48

Fuck it. Rock up and be yourself. No need to pretend to be something you’re not. Wear a nice dress if you like.

zurg123 · 31/03/2024 20:52

Why do you care so much? The most important thing is being happy in life regardless of how much money you have.

trekking1 · 31/03/2024 20:54

You'd have to dress classy, but not flashy (think how the royals dress) and from there it's about talk, not looks. Mentioning your ski trips, little Josh going to private school, lie that you live in an expensive area etc. And just pray you won't get found out!
