I remember Depeche Mode songs really well from school discos & Top of the Pops etc in the 80s.

But I didn't really follow them, I was a bit young I think, I was more into Duran Duran, Adam & the Ants, Wham and Bananarama.

So I never paid them much attention. I just remember them as grown up men in suits.

This video popped up on Facebook today and OMFG they're babies, aren't they!! They look like they're about 12! I feel very old very proud of them all of a sudden Grin

Did anyone else not realise this, or am I the only one?

YABU - everyone knows Depeche Mode were teenagers in the early 80s

YANBU - OMG you're right, I had no idea how adorable they were!! (Fuck we're old now!)

Argh! This makes me feel so old!!! They are babies!

OldTinHat · 21/03/2024 20:41

Oh, bless their cotton socks!!! They're so young! (Jeez, I'm fucking old!!)

stayathomer · 21/03/2024 20:42

What?!?!?

Rosestulips · 21/03/2024 20:44

Love this song 😍

ISeeTheLight · 21/03/2024 20:46

No I didn't know this either (I was born in the 80s though so that's my excuse 😅).
One of my favourite songs ever is Somebody. Just stunning. I love the lyrics.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 21/03/2024 20:48

I grew up in their town and they practiced at my school youth club. They really were just like "boys next door" and Dave Gahan was always friendly and smiley if you saw him around town even after they got really famous. I met them a few times in the early years. I'm a huge fan even now and go to all the concerts.

PatellaBella789 · 21/03/2024 20:49

😂😂. YANBU

GreenSmithing · 21/03/2024 20:49

Oh God! They're basically the One Direction of synthpop!

Blackcats7 · 21/03/2024 20:49

Depeche Mode were the first band I ever went to see. They were great!

It’s supposed to be a sign of your age when the police look like children, not bands……

Teardrop Explodes

Needesppressonow · 21/03/2024 20:55

Love this song, totally agree! I’m old too 😩

OldTinHat · 21/03/2024 20:55

Oh look at them now! Wow!

EVHead · 21/03/2024 20:57

That’s not even their earliest times as that’s Alan “Wild”er (thanks Smash Hits!) on keyboards rather than Vince Clarke.

Love them!

Needesppressonow · 21/03/2024 20:57

I had such a crush on Dave Gahan back in the day!

Omgwhatthehell · 21/03/2024 20:59

I saw this somewhere the other day and thought exactly the same! They look about 16.

Fitzbillie · 21/03/2024 21:01

Oh wow! They looked ancient in their suits to me at the time. Ancient like 30! 😂

Did anyone else think, “I play synth, we all play synth…” while watching the video? 😂

tracktrail · 21/03/2024 21:08

OMG, I was teenage then, but for some reason, I didn't 'get' that a lot of these bands were pretty much contemporary to me, I always felt 'younger', I guess they looked more sophisticated and adult style cool..oh god, how did I miss that??

Teardrop Explodes

I'd forgotten about them!!! Wow!!!!

Riverlee · 21/03/2024 21:15

Wow, I feel old.

takemeawayagain · 21/03/2024 21:19

The lead singer had the voice of a 30 year old despite only being a kid. I always thought they were old men when I young (born mid 70's).

mrsfollowill · 21/03/2024 21:23

Still playing it live in 2024! I saw them a couple of nights after this in Manchester was epic,. Sadly only Dave and Martin left from the original band but they have still got it and are still writing original material year after year. Love them and have been a fan since the 80's

Depeche Mode - "Just Can't Get Enough" The O2, London, Monday 22nd January 2024.

Conversely, I’m always aware hiw old some pop stars are now.

Paul Young, for example is now 68, so he must be late twenties when he had hits as a solo artist in early eighties when I was a young teen.

Talking of deep voices, Tony Hadley was 20 when Spandau Ballet made their first appearance on TOTP. 20!!!

I remember them on TOTP
