Who else knew Depeche Mode were about 12!!!

I remember Depeche Mode songs really well from school discos & Top of the Pops etc in the 80s.

But I didn't really follow them, I was a bit young I think, I was more into Duran Duran, Adam & the Ants, Wham and Bananarama.

So I never paid them much attention. I just remember them as grown up men in suits.

This video popped up on Facebook today and OMFG they're babies, aren't they!! They look like they're about 12! I feel very old very proud of them all of a sudden Grin

Did anyone else not realise this, or am I the only one?

YABU - everyone knows Depeche Mode were teenagers in the early 80s

YANBU - OMG you're right, I had no idea how adorable they were!! (Fuck we're old now!)

Gosh I thought they were much older than me. I think it’s the suits that gave that impression. Love the way the lead singer danced.

Talking of deep voices, Tony Hadley was 20 when Spandau Ballet made their first appearance on TOTP. 20!!!

This is my favourite Spandau Ballet song of all time. Tony's vocals were outstanding on it and he can still belt out a tune to this day, putting younger artists to shame. Even Tom Jones, now in his 80's has still got it❤️

That’s not even their earliest times as that’s Alan “Wild”er (thanks Smash Hits!) on keyboards rather than Vince Clarke.

Love them!

"Crazy name, crazy guy!!" (Note the Black Type)

I had such a crush on Dave Gahan back in the day!

Mine never went away 😂

TheHardScab · 22/03/2024 15:44

My fav band, still listen to them now every day, I am 54😀

Nitgel · 22/03/2024 15:50

They were cool back then, i loved DM and saw them about 1984 at Hammersmith. We were all there in our v neck jumpers

Nitgel · 22/03/2024 15:51

he has the same moves as he did then :)

MabelMaybe · 22/03/2024 15:55

I knew they used to go to Top of the Pops on the train, with their keyboards. None of that "turn up in a limo" glamour.

I still do!

Howard Jones is 70 next year. He was 28 when he released this one (my favourite HJ song).

(Apart from the age - and good on him - Howard is one of those names you never see on the Baby Names board.)

I had no idea, mainly because everyone older than me as a child was obviously ancient!

TheMurderousGoose · 22/03/2024 16:05

They were marginally older looking than the Mini Pops.

EmmaEmerald · 22/03/2024 16:08

Your title confused me completely.

But also they weren't teenagers in the early 80s, Dave was born in 1961. I'm so confused. That gives them a max of one year being teens and they hadn't even had their first hit....

I don't like this time warp, I nearly went to check a load of dates after seeing this but no, my brain is working!

I need more coffee. Maybe you too OP, I'll make one for you!

LindaPen · 22/03/2024 16:12

I went to the same school. They were all in bands earlier, but didn't form Depeche Mode until 1980 when Clarke and Gahan would have been 17/18. Andy Fletcher was a bit older.

Teardrop Explodes

I have an ear worm now.

How is it that 80s songs that I’ve probably heard twice since the 80s play in my head as clear as day? Where was that data stored?

Best band in the world 🖤

Hoping they’ve got another tour in them!

I have the same thing; I’d have pictured them aged about 35 at the time even though that clearly can’t be right 😂 They were “grown ups” and that was that!

tothesea · 22/03/2024 16:56

Babies. And cute as all hell. I have seen them live many times but I so wish I’d seen them in those days.

Dave Gahan was born in 1962 so he was 18/19 when the had their first hits. Same age as my DS now. So very young.

feellikeanalien · 22/03/2024 17:05

Wow they're round about the same age as me and I'm sure I didn't look as young as that in the early 80s. (Rushes off to find old photos.)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/03/2024 17:59

Ah now who used to sing "I just can't get it up" to this ...........

DD was looking at the video He can't dance can he ?
I pointed out it was how we danced in the 80s keep your feet still and your body moves .

Dave Gahan was sooo cute looked like a nerdy bank clerk but the sexiest speaking voice

Bassetlover · 22/03/2024 18:12

Bloody hell! I feel ancient! Depeche Mode are amazing though!

EmmaEmerald · 22/03/2024 18:57

I think Blasphemous Rumours is my favourite.

Generally, I love the whole synth thing.
