"You look too young to have kids"

People at work are always shocked when I say I have a 6 year old DC. Yesterday I was told "You look too young to have children". Previously, colleagues have said "I can't believe it" and were more surprised to hear of my DC's age.

I'm 32, so I do find these comments quite strange.

On top of the above, I find that my co-workers continually comment on my appearance - "you always look stylish", "you always look nice/well", "You're looking chic" etc. The other day, a female colleague looked at my face and then proceeded to say that her makeup skills are rubbish, again out of nowhere.

Bare in mind, I wear very minimal makeup up at work and by no means am I a fashionista. I have a simple and modest style.

As soon as I walk into the staff room, they all look at my body which makes me feel uncomfortable. This week a male colleague (who excessively compliments me) asked me out - again making things awkward.

AIBU to feel this is all too much?

I’m 30 and constantly get referred to as my older girls big sister- doesn’t help that my oldest is almost my height 🤣

They are all really well and truly jell @HT340
It's not your fault you're so teeny tiny and delicate and ridiculously good looking!

Mid 20s is an odd age to be a mum now. Round here other mums are either much younger and a bit rough, or in their 40s wearing cloth dungarees and speaking to me like I’m 11. I hear you.

Is this a humble brag 😂 good for you op but it IS unusual for a working mum to look great and well put together so I can see why people compliment and comment!

existentialpain · 15/03/2024 13:24

I had my DC in my early 20's and people generally thought I was about 14/5. I got a lot of disapproving looks and comments.

I sympathise. People here might think it's a 'good' problem to have, but in my experience it was downright horrible at times dealing with people's perceptions of me.

I used to get comments like that when mine were little (and I was your age) and I used to love it tbh. Now I'm 44 and they are 18, and don't get comments like that so much, and I miss it because I'm a vain cow. So my advice is to enjoy it whilst it lasts.

Things were never like this in my previous workplace. I'm also average looking so I don't understand all this happening now.

Maybe they're just shock, horror... nice and saying things to make you feel good?

Anoisagusaris · 15/03/2024 13:31

Maybe you are so hideous looking that they feel they have to overcompensate?

Maybe your new colleagues are just uglier than average so you stand out?

I'm 5 ft 6 so not teeny tiny. And far from being ridiculously good looking.

I know how you feel. I too am just incredibly average and everyone stares at me and compliments me everywhere I go! It’s such a drag! So glad to find someone who understands my struggle ❤️

Possibly. I haven't done my roots since October last year. I've not had my face waxed in a while (I'm quite hairy) so a great possibility actually.
