"You look too young to have kids"

HT340 · 15/03/2024 13:10

People at work are always shocked when I say I have a 6 year old DC. Yesterday I was told "You look too young to have children". Previously, colleagues have said "I can't believe it" and were more surprised to hear of my DC's age.

I'm 32, so I do find these comments quite strange.

On top of the above, I find that my co-workers continually comment on my appearance - "you always look stylish", "you always look nice/well", "You're looking chic" etc. The other day, a female colleague looked at my face and then proceeded to say that her makeup skills are rubbish, again out of nowhere.

Bare in mind, I wear very minimal makeup up at work and by no means am I a fashionista. I have a simple and modest style.

As soon as I walk into the staff room, they all look at my body which makes me feel uncomfortable. This week a male colleague (who excessively compliments me) asked me out - again making things awkward.

AIBU to feel this is all too much?

My friend is a bit like this.
She's young (34) well groomed, very fit, has a decent job & mum of 2 same ages as mine (45).

Frankly, it's weird 😂 she doesn't fit the young mum group, nor the old mum group. It's like she got her shit together far to soon IMO.

For reasons known only to herself, she's joined our school mum group (45+) & makes us do young person things like bottomless brunches.

But we don't compliment her & instead make her listen to tales of woe about terrible body stuff that happens when you hit 40+

Enjoy it. You're winning.

Always makes me laugh when people say you look too young to have children. I mean you can have children at 15/16 - do they really think you look like a teenager 🤣🤣

SabreIsMyFave · 15/03/2024 16:31

Errrrm, did you not read my post properly? I said I believe you! (That people think you - at 37 - look too young to have adult children - in their 20s.Confused)

Try reading my post again. I believe someone of 37 can look as young as 29-32, and if you have children in your 20s, you may not look old enough to be their parent (at that point.)

However, saying someone looks too young to have children - at all! - in their 30s, is just ludicrous, and untrue. Of course they don't look too young.

And I never said you have 3 children. You are responding to someone else's post here! 😬

Is this a humble brag 😂 good for you op but it IS unusual for a working mum to look great and well put together so I can see why people compliment and comment!

This is an interesting opinion. Is this yourself you are describing? I never let myself go! I'm exactly the same.. in fact I am self conscious so make some effort if anything.

I NEVER get bored of these humble bragging threads. Not even when there's been more than one a week. Nuh-uh!

I looked good, and stylish, and well groomed (as a working mum) and had got my figure back quickly, after the DC were born, and yeah, in my mid 30s I looked 26-28 (like many other 30-somethings.) I certainly didn't look 'too young to have children.' 🙄

The OP must look about 10! 😆

BobbyBiscuits · 15/03/2024 16:55

I'd think of something worse to moan about in regards to your workplace. The guy asking you out, bit cheeky. Just politely decline, and forget about it. They either think you're very attractive or are just being nice. I fail to see a downside. Unless it goes into sexual harassment territory of course.

x2boys, you've popped my bubble. The consultant didn't know I was an ex nurse. My daughter sat next to my granddaughter, I was the other side of the room. When I was pregnant with my first 19, pre-eclampsia had to leave my wedding ring off, the other patients were saying, disgusting me pregnant obviously only about 15.

But you're in your seventies! Unless you're trolling. It's hard to tell sometimes.

benjoin · 15/03/2024 17:59

My thoughts would be that they are overcompensating

Starspangledrodeopony · 15/03/2024 19:31

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Allfur · 15/03/2024 19:34

It's not unusual if you have kids young

ouch321 · 15/03/2024 19:37

Are you Samantha Brick's daughter by any chance?

GalileoHumpkins · 15/03/2024 15:23

I absolutely feel your pain OP.
I'm 55 and constantly get told I look years younger. Only this morning I was out shopping in Dunnes and had an assistant grab my hand and walk me to the tills where she announced over the tannoy that I was lost in the store and could my mammy come and get me. Mortifying.

Would most likely be in a similar situation to you when I'm 50. Considering people think I look about 12 now. Need to start mentally preparing myself.😢

Clearly with great difficult. My day is definitely harder than everyone else's. Poor me!😓

All2Well · 15/03/2024 20:16

I think you're being quite silly.

I'm 40.

My friend's grandaughter is 7 and constantly says, "I wish you were my sister" to me. Sister. As if I'm 10.

I don't get upset, I just think it's funny.

It could be worse, they think you're young and stylish - would you prefer them to say you look old enough to be a grandmother and that you're frumpy? People say all sorts of things. At least they're complimenting you.
