"You look too young to have kids"

HT340 · 15/03/2024 13:10

People at work are always shocked when I say I have a 6 year old DC. Yesterday I was told "You look too young to have children". Previously, colleagues have said "I can't believe it" and were more surprised to hear of my DC's age.

I'm 32, so I do find these comments quite strange.

On top of the above, I find that my co-workers continually comment on my appearance - "you always look stylish", "you always look nice/well", "You're looking chic" etc. The other day, a female colleague looked at my face and then proceeded to say that her makeup skills are rubbish, again out of nowhere.

Bare in mind, I wear very minimal makeup up at work and by no means am I a fashionista. I have a simple and modest style.

As soon as I walk into the staff room, they all look at my body which makes me feel uncomfortable. This week a male colleague (who excessively compliments me) asked me out - again making things awkward.

AIBU to feel this is all too much?

Some posters have really made me chuckle! ❤

To the rest - why sooooo serious? it's just a post by a stranger on the internet..🙄

And I'm not a troll. I promise. I'm a woman of religion. I do not lie or make things up.

People are frequently shocked that I have kids the ages that I do (15 & 20) but then people often assume I’m quite a lot younger than I am too.

Take the other comments as a compliment, I’m not sure why you’d be bothered by nice comments, the only comments I frequently get about my clothes from colleagues is ‘jesus christ what the fuck are you wearing’ 😂

BirthdayRainbow · 15/03/2024 20:33

🙄🤔

AnnaKorine · 15/03/2024 20:43

Mumsnet gets very funny about any hint of Samantha Brickness. For what it’s worth I’m in my 40s and have the same, I find it a bit weird and don’t really understand why I am so different from other people. I don’t look like the back end of the bus but aren’t exactly a child version of Kate Moss either. It’s very peculiar I garner so much attention.

Threemusketeers80 · 15/03/2024 20:45

32 have a 13 and nearly 11 year old. Always get told I look too young to have that age children. Get ID most of the time. Just not stylish. Maybe that's why I get looked at in the staff room 🤔

Exhausting. Considering leaving my job if I'm honest. 😰😓

Is your new job being the next Kendall Jenner?

pleasecallmeback · 15/03/2024 21:03

Why are there so many women on here who look years younger than their age? I work in mainly female environment and I can't think of a single person who looks much, much younger than they are. I work with women aged from 19 - 70, and I never get the older ones confused with the younger ones. I, of course, am mid 50's, and frequently mistaken for a teenager on work experience.

That last sentence might not be true.

It's a mumsnet phenomenon,

we have penis beakers
we scream at the Sistine Chapel
we only eat "naice" ham
and would never own a loo brush
we all have the mumsnet haircut
saltwater sandals
and THAT Uniqlo handbag
sometimes we snap and fart
we ask "did you mean to be so rude?"
and declare "you're being a bit obtuse"
while we tilt our heads
do the Paddington stare
AND tinkly laugh
we draw diagrams about parking
and ask "who the hell is TESTING for Covid these days!"
but we are always "blue lighted" to hospital
sometimes for a SEVERE headache
or a SERIOUS chest infection
which ended in DOUBLE PNEUMONIA
and needing STRONG antibiotics
we earn in excess of £100k a year, each
but would NEVER send our children
Balonz
and
Persephone
to private school
our DH's have "hobbies" which are "too outing" to share
but we all secretly know that when it's OTHER posters DH's it's always, ALWAYS
Cycling
and they should LTB
But first, have my first Biscuit
and cancel the cheque!
make sure you have all your ducks in a row
and
here have an un-mumsnetty hug
sorry haven't RTFT but FFS RTFT or AT LEAST OPs UPDATES!!!

and we do all of this...ALL of this by being 47 (and being in the HEIGHT of perimenopause) whilst looking 16 and being IDd whilst buying wine in Waitrose.

And, as of today, with our 6 year olds tagging behind us carrying their own vomit in a bowl because we are destitute single friendless mothers with no access to a car, a bank account, cash, cards or Uber Eats. But, although we have just given birth to naturally conceived perfectly healthy triplets at 47...we still don't look old enough to be mothers.

I hope that's clear. It's just how things are round here.

Are you being deliberately obtuse, Kool Aid?

That would be thread about a THREAD!

And don't quote me again! You've made me derail the thread!

Disclaimer for the perpetually offended; the above is a joke and I am actually sorry for derailing the thread OP

I get that all the time.

Most people think my daughter is my sister - they always have.

I think because people without children can relate to me and let’s face it everyone has an opinion of what a mother should look like - sadly not always “well put together” not “ambitious” or not young - which I think is BS - but it’s the society we are in. Motherhood still carried stigma …

Nailed it 😂

Wishimaywishimight · 16/03/2024 12:07

I read a magazine article recently with a 50 something woman saying how people thought she and her 20 something daughter were sisters. It was utterly ludicrous and totally deluded - it was as clear as day that she was considerably older.

People say things to be nice or just to make small talk. People can look good for their age but they rarely look significantly younger.

Firawla · 16/03/2024 12:10

I find it hard to believe that you look too young tbh as most people who say this don’t.
32 is not young to have a 6 year old - sounds normal and average, there is nothing to over think here

Nannyfannybanny · 16/03/2024 17:18

DerekFaker, I am 73. No trolling. When I was pregnant with my last 41,a lot of people asked if it was my first. My 21 year old has a baby the following year.

Yeah every time I read articles like that it's always immediately obvious to.me who the mother is and they don't look like sisters
They may look good for their age but generally they look their age .

Nannyfannybanny · 16/03/2024 20:32

Being as Victoria coren Mitchell had a baby at 53, she will be getting in for 70 with a 14 year old.

It's a common question to ask when someone only has one child with them (like when the older ones are at school or are old enough to leave by themselves) .

I think it could be an upsetting question for someone who has suffered a loss.
