I don’t understand why people share

Facebook profiles.

It’s a really psycho thing to do. Your name is not “Johnny-Beth”. You are not one merged identity, you’re two different people with different friends, interests, lives…

Some over lap obviously but that’s not the point of my post.

Just who does this? And why? Do you want us all to know how marvellously joined at the hip you are? Are you so suspicious of social media that you can’t maintain your own profile and need to share one to feel safe? In which case, why bother at all?

It makes me cringe when I see it.

YABU - sharing profiles makes sense for the time-poor and socially challenged
YANBU - only total weirdos do this

I assume that any couple who share a Facebook have had cheating in the relationship. Sorry! 🙈 Similarly I assume anyone with a hot tub is a swinger so I do have form for being a judge Judy.

Candleabra · 15/03/2024 11:52

Does anyone do this any more? It was definitely a “thing” about 15 years ago, along with shared couple email addresses but I haven’t seen it for years.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 15/03/2024 11:54

I see it all the time! Mainly hetero married couples who are quite…conservative. I’m in the UK.

I don’t think I’ve seen this. It’s a bit cutesy but otherwise wouldn’t bother me, I don’t think.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/03/2024 11:58

The only people I know who have this are retired couples, who just use it to see pictures of grandkids and to keep up with community events

Bournetilly · 15/03/2024 12:01

I’ve seen a few people do this, just makes me think they have trust issues.

ObliviousCoalmine · 15/03/2024 12:03

I know people who have this. It's horrendously cringy. I assume either cheating or sheer incompetence; neither are flattering.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 15/03/2024 12:05

I can't imagine even noticing this let alone being bothered by it

bananaboats · 15/03/2024 12:05

I've never seen anyone do this

kcchiefette · 15/03/2024 12:07

Its people who have major trust issues in their relationships.

Bizarre behaviour.

I have a couple of old work mates like this.

Wisterical · 15/03/2024 12:11

Yep, one of them has cheated.

hagchic · 15/03/2024 12:12

As both of your poll options are insulting and negative I cannot vote.

I think there are far worse facebook crimes than this.

SmallIslander · 15/03/2024 12:13

I always assume one of the two aren't very tech savvy and have little interest in managing their own account but like to Facebook lurk a bit.

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/03/2024 12:13

Every time I've seen this happen there has been an affair.

RJnomore1 · 15/03/2024 12:14

My friend had this. She had issues trusting her husband, not without reason, and he eventually left her for another woman.

Thars my non scientific sample of 1 though

BertieBotts · 15/03/2024 12:15

It's a Boomer thing, isn't it?

People who got facebook in about 2009 and accessed it from a single, shared, family computer and couldn't be arsed logging in and out of different accounts all the time so they just shared one. Like people used to have a shared family email address attached to their ISP.

They likely still have one account out of not wanting to go to the bother of setting up a second, even if they now use a smartphone to access Facebook (which they might well not).

Hellocatshome · 15/03/2024 12:17

The only people I know do this are older couples who don't really engage in Facebook but like to be able to see the photos their kids/grandkids post. They also seem to have shared email addresses as well.

Fully agree
The voting options are appalling.

I am friends on Fb with some Irish Travellers. Sometimes I have a nosey through their friends profiles as I find their lifestyle really interesting. Nearly every single one of them have joint profiles so definitely a thing in that community.

littleburn · 15/03/2024 12:23

I know one couple who do this. In their 40s and fairly alternative. I think it's a hangover from when they were travelling the world together. I find it odd. I'm more friends with the wife than the husband and it's not always obvious who's posting so I don't really engage with their posts. Also 'it's x and x's birthday, send them a message'.Which bloody one is it??

KreedKafer · 15/03/2024 12:24

I haven't actually seen a shared profile for years, but I did know someone who had one for a while in the early days of Facebook and every time I saw it, it made me feel itchy and claustrophobic.

Ultimately people can use their profile however they like. It's none of my business and don't think it means they're actually miserable or having an affair if they have a joint profile. Totally up to them and each to their own. But (like Oodies, camping and meditation) very much something I'd file under 'Not For Me'.

GasPanic · 15/03/2024 12:25

Some people want to present themselves to the world as a unit and some don't.

That's a choice we are all entitled to make - you could wear yourself out getting angry about stuff like this.

QOD · 15/03/2024 12:25

i have one friend who does this, she's an ex cop so likes to kind of hide but be findable. I hate it tho as her hubby is useless at passing messages on

Came here to say I've only ever seen Travellers doing it.

TheSnowyOwl · 15/03/2024 12:27

The only people I know who do this are in their 80s and likely had the profile set up by their grandchildren and it’s only ever one of the couple who logs on to see how the family are doing.
