To find this kind of smile annoying?

There's a certain smile a lot of young women use in photos on social media and something about it is irritating me. I guess because it looks posed rather than a natural smile. Or maybe I'm wrong and it IS their natural smile, but I'm seeing it more and more so I believe it's a trend. It's hard to describe but it looks like just the corners of their mouth are curling up... I tried to find an example but without doing screenshots from social media which isn't cool, I can't find one. Does anyone know what I mean and why am I seeing this smile a lot?

ffs now women can’t even smile without someone moaning about it. ‘Smile love, it might never happen. Oh no, don’t smile like that.’

Sonora25 · 10/03/2024 14:38

Can women do anything right?

AuContraire · 10/03/2024 14:39

I th him I know the type you mean. A bit more smirky than a smile?

jellyfishbubbles · 10/03/2024 14:39

Stop looking at people's faces if you can't handle it.

jellyfishbubbles · 10/03/2024 14:39

Very much a "you" problem.

NoddyfromToytown · 10/03/2024 14:40

It’s FaceApp

pinkyredrose · 10/03/2024 14:41

Can we see the smile you mean? Or better yet show us your own smile.

Do you mean that weird Joker smile?

AvonleaHeart · 10/03/2024 14:43

I knew what it was before I finished reading 😹

Yes, I hate it too.
It (to me) feels very patronising and forced.

There's a certain Tiktoker who I have blocked because she does it constantly.

It's definitely a bit of a trend at the moment but will soon disappear like the duck pout did.

It would help if someone posted a picture of the smile. The rest of us have no idea what anyone is referring to

PeggPuff · 10/03/2024 14:49

It will soon disappear just like the duck pout and tribal tattoos (well, outdated tattoos don’t disappear obviously but it’s in the same category..).

mathanxiety · 10/03/2024 14:50

"Smile, luv."

"Smile properly, luv."

3luckystars · 10/03/2024 14:52

I’d love to see this too.

There was a post last week naming celebrities that had this DONE to their lips surgically.

PeggPuff · 10/03/2024 14:53

The idea is that a youthful mouth would point up rather than down I guess. But it looks creepy af.

AhBiscuits · 10/03/2024 14:54

I've got no idea what you're talking about.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 10/03/2024 14:55

I don't know what you mean - could you post a picture of just a mouth so it doesn't identify the smiler?

SerenChocolateMuncher · 10/03/2024 14:57

I don't know the smile you mean, but I do remember a few years ago how young people (male and female) would take selfies pulling a strange face that made them look like they were straining to do a poo. My daughter and her friends used to do it. I called it the "constipated pose" and suggested they include more fibre in their diets.

Well exactly. If someone holds a camera up, then I'm going to pose for the photograph. It's quite obviously not a natural smile, and I don't particularly care if people can tell it wasn't a candid moment of genuine happiness.

Just another thing that we women do wrong I suppose.

NoddyfromToytown · 10/03/2024 15:02

Definitely FaceApp… just did this to my own face, think that’s the sort of tight smug smile OP means

I didn't want to post a photo of another woman as that's a bit mean (and I can't do it with ny mouth shape) but yes!
Like what Noddy posted, but often even more exaggerated.

Brindle5 · 10/03/2024 15:34

Oh wow is it an app? Yes Noddy that is the kind of thing I mean. Sorry to those who don't know what I am talking about. I agree it's frustrating to not have given an example, but googling didn't bring up anything useful and I am absolutely not posting a picture from social media.
Yes, Hermit, I think it could be the joker smile! It has that unnatural quality to it!

I understand people smiling for a photo are going to pose. I'm not talking about that. If people are making this smile in real life rather than using an app, I can't believe it's a face they make without practising in a mirror. I can't even work out how I'd make that face if I wanted to.

Offended by a smile. I've heard everything now. Only on mumsnet 🙄🤦‍♀️

Aviee · 10/03/2024 15:44

It's Face app.
