To find this kind of smile annoying?

There's a certain smile a lot of young women use in photos on social media and something about it is irritating me. I guess because it looks posed rather than a natural smile. Or maybe I'm wrong and it IS their natural smile, but I'm seeing it more and more so I believe it's a trend. It's hard to describe but it looks like just the corners of their mouth are curling up... I tried to find an example but without doing screenshots from social media which isn't cool, I can't find one. Does anyone know what I mean and why am I seeing this smile a lot?

I don't think anyone has mentioned being offended 😂
I'm irritated by it. Like I'm sure we all are by countless petty things.

Why not stop mindlessly scrolling on SM?

... works for me!

just need give up MN !!

Offended by a smile. I've heard everything now. Only on mumsnet 🙄🤦‍♀️

Op didn’t say she was offended. She said it is irritating. Which is fair enough especially as it is not a real smile but a fake FaceApp smile so that you look like everyone else.

phoenixrosehere · 10/03/2024 15:56

Aren’t the corners supposed to naturally turn up when you smile even if there isn’t any teeth showing?

HermioneHerman · 10/03/2024 16:13

I'm not exactly irritated by it but I do know what you mean. It's absolutely ubiquitous these days and a bit boring, the aim just seems to be to look the same and do all the same things. Like the influencers waving their shoes/ jewellery/ handbags up close to the camera as they get dressed and then doing the same full-length poses in their outfit, kicking leg up behind them, blowing a kiss etc. Or the beauty ads with some zen-like bare-faced model slowly and ecstatically dotting and then massaging moisturiser into her face. Is anyone really that joyful about their skincare routine? I just find it dull and fake.

Cheeesus · 10/03/2024 16:21

That’s fillers isn’t it? Oh, odd, a few responses hadn’t refreshed.
I was commenting on the last photo.

Brindle5 · 10/03/2024 16:30

Is it, Cheeesus? I don't know. If this type of smile is being caused by fillers it explains it.

Smiling bitch face?

Isometimeswonder · 10/03/2024 16:36

Wtaf are people moaning about now?! Jesus wept.

GinBlossom94 · 10/03/2024 17:24

Is that not just smiling? I don't show my teeth when I smile as I don't like them/feel self conscious about them

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/03/2024 17:26

NoddyfromToytown · 10/03/2024 15:02

Definitely FaceApp… just did this to my own face, think that’s the sort of tight smug smile OP means

It's Botox in the corners of the mouth to lift them slightly.

tittybumbum · 10/03/2024 17:32

Where are people seeing these sinister semi smilers? I haven't seen any

NoddyfromToytown · 10/03/2024 17:33

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I’ve never heard of anyone getting Botox in that area, certainly not something my practitioner would offer.

@Brindle5 yes it’s an app, you can try it for yourself for free. I do use it on my pics but I’m careful not to change my face too much - a lot of influencers just use the same preset which is why all their faces look the same. I never do anything with the smile bit as it does always look so unnatural!

Why not do the same yourself? Stop scrolling and reading about something that clearly doesn’t interest you. I find trends interesting!

You can see the blurry paint tool edit line around the mouth on the close up pic she attached in this thread, so it's pretty clear that it's a filter/fake addition rather than an actual smile.

edited for clarity - I mean the photo close up op attached as an example of what she was talking about

That was from a tabloid photo - would they use filters? I thought the explanation of lip filler made more sense.

@Brindle5

It's the feminine twist to the Joker smile of batman's villian,

they think 🤔 they are being alluring and sexy or suggestive
but it's the opposite of all that...

Whoknowswhatthefutureholdshey · 10/03/2024 19:51

What app is it?

FaceApp

BeretRaspberry · 10/03/2024 19:56

I know what you mean. I only ever notice it because I think it looks unnatural and forced. Also makes me think that’s probably the same face they pull when straining for a poo.

theduchessofspork · 10/03/2024 20:00

Is it meant to be like ‘a slight smile played around her lips’ Babs Cartland esque

rooftopbird · 10/03/2024 20:03

Irritated by women's mouths when they smile, fuck me get a life. I don't think I've ever studied a picture long enough to notice.

minipie · 10/03/2024 20:05

Is it basically do a little pout, and then smile while maintaining the pout (impossible with a real smile)? That’s what it looks like.

3luckystars · 10/03/2024 20:07

Is it like the Joker?

Pussycat22 · 10/03/2024 20:10

God in heaven!!!
