To find this kind of smile annoying?

There's a certain smile a lot of young women use in photos on social media and something about it is irritating me. I guess because it looks posed rather than a natural smile. Or maybe I'm wrong and it IS their natural smile, but I'm seeing it more and more so I believe it's a trend. It's hard to describe but it looks like just the corners of their mouth are curling up... I tried to find an example but without doing screenshots from social media which isn't cool, I can't find one. Does anyone know what I mean and why am I seeing this smile a lot?

Oh look another thread to mock women and put down make up/fillers/anyone who dares to put any effort into how they look.

JiraffDeSaki · 10/03/2024 20:13

Oh thaaaat smile, yes I keep seeing that around and thinking it was the new duck face!

There is a tik-tocker who does it endlessly, I'm mostly mesmerised by their impeccable ombre lip colour but the joker smile does make them look a bit odd.

karma3 · 10/03/2024 20:19

I feel like I smile like this but I don't use face app 😅 I hate smiling with my teeth

FerryBerryHerry · 10/03/2024 20:21

There is a particular kind of smile that people do sometimes when taking a selfie, which looks a bit weird because the point is really to make your cheekbones look more prominent, and in order to do so you have to pull a slightly smug smize face (or even more alarmingly, combine with an ‘eye flash’). You’re pulling your cheeks upwards while keeping your mouth closed (remember, the point isn’t to smile, it’s to look better looking), so your mouth unintentionally pulls into an tight little upward-turned pouty smile. I know because 7,000,000 of my selfies from 2003 onwards look like this 😆😂😂

I had no idea it might be fillers that caused this smile and I don't see what make up has to do with it. To me the smile looks odd and contrived and I couldn't understand why I was suddenly seeing it all over the place. Seems like a couple of possibilities.

Is that not just a basic smile with your lips closed? Or is it something different?

Pepsipepsi · 10/03/2024 20:32

GinBlossom94 · 10/03/2024 17:24

Is that not just smiling? I don't show my teeth when I smile as I don't like them/feel self conscious about them

Same.

The example pictures posted are my natural closed mouth smile. I have massive buck teeth so you better believe I'm not showing those in photos posted online. I've never had fillers/ cosmetic surgery or use face apps. IT'S JUST MY FACE! 😂 Don't give two hoots what randoms think of my profile pics tbh.

Literally this kind of thing is what causes so much of my anxiety as an autisic person. People say "no one's paying attention to how you smile/walk/talk." "People won't remember long enough to criticise you to other people." When actually, no that's not true. People absolutely do criticise others over the tiniest thing, they remember and are bothered by the slightest difference to what they beleive as "normal". I get so anxious over how I smile so thanks for showing that I am absolutely right to feel self conscious when I smile.

Is this an autistic thing? Coz I spend A LOT of time worrying if my expression looks how it should and my DH thinks I have autistic traits and keeps pestering me to see my gp

scotmam925 · 10/03/2024 20:45

Is it a smize

IamaRevenant · 10/03/2024 21:01

Oh one of DH's (female) friends does this all the time! She kind of flattens/pouts the middle part of her lip and turns the ends up - it looks so affected and somehow smug and patronising, not helped by the fact it's always accompanied by a weird lifted chin and head tilt pose.

She does it in every photo and in 90% of real life situations which might call for a smile. She's honestly really nice and looks completely normal when she forgets herself and does a genuine smile or laugh but that fake smile... ugh! Just don't smile if you don't feel in a smiling mood, it's fine to not be constantly faking it!

ancienticecream · 10/03/2024 21:03

I wish FaceApp and all that crap would just disappear. Imagine how much better most people's self-esteem would be we got rid of it all.

It's an autistic thing, but I don't know if it's JUST an autisic thing. It may be something non-autisics experience but it's definitely a common experience among us.

Same as how we're often quite monotone. Our faces and voices just don't move naturally with our expressions so we end up looking or sounding "wierd" when having conversations.

Newsenmum · 10/03/2024 21:08

I still don’t get it! Can we get a picture next to a ‘normal’ smile?

Thank you. Yes my DH is diagnosed autistic and I get what you're saying there

No because it is a normal smile

Garlicking · 10/03/2024 21:25

To be fair, I do think she's smirking!

😂😂

soupfiend · 10/03/2024 21:28

Having seen the photo, my smile is a bit like that because I dont like my teeth so I keep mymouth shut while Im smiling.

I always look a bit smug and smirky, cant help it. Its my face.

betterangels · 10/03/2024 21:29

And yet I get grief about my resting bitch face. Women can't win.

"Come on, smile! No, not like that!"

Bloody hell.

No. You need to recognise the difference between sad little people who really have nothing else in their lives than looking at someones smile, how someone eats, what they're wearing etc etc

And the rest of us!!!

The vast, vast vast VAAAAAAAST majority of the population are not looking at you or interested in you, be confident in that.

HermioneHerman · 10/03/2024 21:37

I really think it's just a social media/influencer thing? No one really cares at all in real life, where it actually matters!

Slippersareindeedsexy · 10/03/2024 21:45

No I don't know what you mean. I've never thought about how people smile. In another thread today, people were saying Prince William's children smiled too much and showed their teeth and the backs of their throats. These days you can't do anything, like smile for a fucking photo, without backlash.
