How many steps do you do a day?

No reason, just being nosey :) I work from home at a desk 5 days a week and average around 11,000 steps a day (barely anything during work hours but then make up for it chasing the kids around on evenings and weekends). I thought this was about average since I’m overweight and not actively trying to keep my steps up. Friend is shocked and says I must be cheating somehow. So let me know- what’s your step count average and do you work to get it higher?

I work overnights at a nursing home so I usually hit 10,000 when I’m walking home from work at 7 am. After that I take my watch/pedometer off usually and usually forget to put it back on, so depending how lazy I am after work it could average anywhere from 12k to 20k probably.

Garlicnaan · 18/02/2024 16:38

My days vary wildly from about 2k to 20k+. A couple of active days or a few slobby or sick days can really skew the average.

JaneLawrence · 18/02/2024 16:53

I average about 12 - 13k a day, but most days I’m out and about a fair bit.

If I have a day where I’m just staying in the house I struggle to get above 5 - 6k.

I don’t manage it on an evening, but it ups my steps during the week so the weekend averages it out to 10k? I probably only do 5,000-8,000 during the week and then 15,000-20,000 on a weekend day?

Oh I get you, that makes sense!

Goneforaride · 18/02/2024 17:01

I've done 11,300 today, (at time of typing) but it's been a fairly "quiet" day. Walked dog twice, went food shopping and did some house stuff. I can get up to 15-18K or more on a good day.

SoulMole · 18/02/2024 17:01

I aim for 12k but it takes an effort in a lone-working desk job. Dog walks, the odd run / class.

FLOWER1983 · 18/02/2024 17:11

18-20000 Monday to Friday and 12000 on Saturday/Sunday, but i don't drive, do 4 fitness classes a week and on my feet most of the day

LastRites · 18/02/2024 17:15

Varies: Mondays & Tuesdays I don’t work so anything between 15-25,000 steps. I go to the gym but most just housework / putting laundry away!

Wed-Fri are work days so I’m usually on around 5/6k by the time I get home but always hit at least 10,000 by bedtime

Weekends vary but usually at least 10k (more if I go for a run) per day!

460000 inbetween eating massive salads and week old mutant chicken.

I win the thread with 47, 000 steps a day and I only eat a small salad. 😀🏆

angerelle · 18/02/2024 17:21

I walk to and from work, 20 minutes each way, and walk for half an hour at lunchtime and that's usually enough to do 10k+ a day with general walking round the house/office. I used to wear my Fitbit on my bra, so I think it was pretty accurate, now I wear it on my wrist my average is slightly less.

Your school runs plus dog walk sound easily enough to do those steps, OP.

catotangent · 18/02/2024 17:22

Seriously though I think the steps are overrated. I can sometimes get 10 000 steps just pottering. Not very active at all. It's exercise that's more important.

Ironing, and other sorts of tasks using arms, also adds on a lot of steps 😀

angerelle · 18/02/2024 17:29

@catotangent there has recently been a study that showed walking over about 4.5k steps a day has measurable health benefits, and these increase as step counts do, so it does make a difference!

RomeoandJomeo · 18/02/2024 17:31

Typically around 13,000, though some days I'll do much more than that. A dog walk or two, popping to the shop, and walking around at work. I'm often surprised how it tends to be a similar number of steps each day regardless of whether they are mainly from walking between buildings or round classrooms at work, or from pottering around at home and taking the dog out (unless I go for a long walk, in which case it'll be closer to 25 or 30 thousand).

Spendonsend · 18/02/2024 17:36

About 7-8000 a day, 8-10,000 at the weekends.
I have a desk job. I do potter about but obviously not as much as others on here.

I then take the dog for a minimum 20 minute walk, often twice a day. Im quite impressed by the high figures from people who dont go for an actual walk everyday.

Diamondcurtains · 18/02/2024 17:37

3 days a week I run and even in those days I only do a maximum of 6k.

Ilovesandwiches · 18/02/2024 17:39

It does sound like maybe your watch isn’t accurate?

I work in childcare 8-6 so chasing kids around all day and get about 10,000, about 12,000 if I’ve been to the gym that day too.

awitchoftroubleinelectricblue · 18/02/2024 17:41

Depends on whether I'm at work or not. On a working day, it's usually about 9-10,000. On a day off, like today, it's usually less than 4000.

Mummadeze · 18/02/2024 17:45

12,000 a day most days. Commuting, playing tennis, going to the shops and back.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/02/2024 17:45

I have no idea! I don’t wear a watch and often leave my phone on my kitchen worktop, or desk at work. At the gym I leave my phone in my bag in a locker.

Am I the only person who doesn’t track their steps?!

TheMoth · 18/02/2024 17:46

About 6000. I teach secondary, so rarely sit down. I'm a pacer too, so I'm not sure how it's so low. I've got a big stride though and always do less than other people if I'm out on a walk with smaller friends.

Did the garden today, so hit about 6000 again, just carting shit back and forth.

FinallyFeb · 18/02/2024 17:46

Around 6,500.

VimtoEverywhere · 18/02/2024 17:47

I work on my feet and can do 20,000 during a shift

However, I have a fitbit and it once registered 50 steps while I was using the toilet so I don't think these things are accurate

diamondpony80 · 18/02/2024 17:48

firef1y · 18/02/2024 15:17

I average around 20k, but it ranges from 15k to 30k depending on the day of the week and whether I've had a long run. Most I've done is 75k and that was when I ran a marathon

Wow, I've done that much today for the first time in many, many months (my average is about 7-8k) and my feet are killing me! I only did that much because my car is at the garage. Maybe I'd get used to it if I did it more often though?

Grapewrath · 18/02/2024 17:48

I do 10-15k in a work day- it’s a pretty active job and I take the dog out quickly afterwards
Weekends and holidays I go for longer walks and do 10-20k depending on my day.
On the rare occasion I have a couch day I do about 5k

BookSpines · 18/02/2024 17:48

I have an app on my phone called Komoot, the basic version is free, I average about 9,000 to 11,000. Once or twice a week with an actual walk/ hike it’s more like 18,000. I do go for a walk every day.
