How many steps do you do a day?

No reason, just being nosey :) I work from home at a desk 5 days a week and average around 11,000 steps a day (barely anything during work hours but then make up for it chasing the kids around on evenings and weekends). I thought this was about average since I’m overweight and not actively trying to keep my steps up. Friend is shocked and says I must be cheating somehow. So let me know- what’s your step count average and do you work to get it higher?

@catotangent there has recently been a study that showed walking over about 4.5k steps a day has measurable health benefits, and these increase as step counts do, so it does make a difference!

Don't disagree.

I'm saying that tracking steps is overrated as I can get a few thousand not being very active at all. Just pottering or not walking at all ((steps are also picked up ironing or other similar arms only movement).

Please tell me what you use to count your steps. I'd like to start foing that.

I use an Apple Watch but fitbits etc are cheaper and do the job.

I hit 10k in an active job can hit 15-20k if I go for a walk at lunch but that only happens in the summer

Obviously any movement is better than none, but there's a difference between 2k steps pottering in the garden and 2k steps on a quick power walk.

antoinaphilo · 18/02/2024 17:54

If I'm not likely to hit 10, 000 I sometimes do a step routine (90s style !) on my stepper. Around 20-30 minutes gets me around 5000 steps. Not bad I think and great cardio.

Of course

I think a lot of step counters are inaccurate. I can’t see how you can do 11k a day working from home unless you’re literally walking in circles most of the day….! I go for a walk (1-2 hours) most days and average around 6k a day.

Indeed. I walk fast (at a set speed) on a treadmill down the gym and counted my steps for a minute, to get an idea of how accurate step counters could be. I can walk about 6000 steps in an hour. Fast.

I take step counter totals that people give me with a massive pinch of salt - my second cousin who is 78 and not well told me recently that he and his wife were regularly walking 18000 steps a day. Nah, you're not!

Your house must be massive?

On days I WFH, I struggle to get more than 5,000 (usually between 3-4k) unless I actually leave the house and go for a walk.

Same here (no children to chase!). For office days I can easily do 11000 steps without even trying.

TrollopHunter · 18/02/2024 18:03

Grapewrath · 18/02/2024 17:48

I do 10-15k in a work day- it’s a pretty active job and I take the dog out quickly afterwards
Weekends and holidays I go for longer walks and do 10-20k depending on my day.
On the rare occasion I have a couch day I do about 5k

If this isn’t just posturing, how does anyone get to 5k on a “couch” day? Sprints in the sunroom? Garden marathon? Loo patrol?? I do drop off, walk to work/shops, then chasing DD and chores in the evening and barely get to 4K most days.

NewName24 · 18/02/2024 18:05

Step counters are notoriously inaccurate.
I have one on my phone. I can do exactly the same walk as someone else in my family, and mine is always a much lower count than they display. This is despite me only having little leggies and knowing I will have done considerably more steps than them over 5km or so, as my stride length is quite a bit shorter.

I also go to an exercise class where we all do pretty much the same steps for 15mins, and every week there is considerable difference between the number of steps recorded by the people that are wearing fitbit type watches - like hundreds of steps difference, when the actual difference could only be up to a couple of dozen at the most.

WhatToDooooooooo · 18/02/2024 18:05

If you're going by a fitbit, it counts every time you move your hand. When staying with my mum, her fitbit can measure 3x as much as my clip-on pedometer (which I am very confident in as have checked it against route planners) despite us doing exactly the same thing all day.

She is very complacent as she thinks she's doing 15k+ per day, when in fact she's doing between 3 and 5k (5 on a very busy day).

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/02/2024 18:07

Every day is very different, but I aim for 50k or more a week.thus week I've had a 14k day and a 4k day, but it's looking like I'll be on around 68o for the week.

ClawdeenWolf · 18/02/2024 18:11

I walk everywhere so on an average day it works out around 11,000 to 12,000. If I'm at home for the day I barely crack 5,000. I use a Fitbit.

FinallyFeb · 18/02/2024 18:12

I always get to 5k on a couch day just by doing a bit of housework, putting some washing away, nipping upstairs to get something etc, etc. I do spend a lot of time on my arse but I also must do more pottering about than I realise.

Grapewrath · 18/02/2024 18:16

In Terms of accuracy, my Fitbit and I phone usually measure about the same. I phone slightly less as I don’t take it to the toilet etc. Fitbit also measured very similar to a friends pedometer on a walk we went one so I feel quite confident with mine. I do wonder if it depends on the model too

By couch day I mean a day where I sit around or chill most of the day- I obviously do housework and look after my kids 🤣. I might pop to the local shop too.
I don’t actually just sit on the couch the entire day.

PSEnny · 18/02/2024 18:21

I’m surprised you’re hitting 11,000 working from home. Do you walk the kids to school and back?
mine varies a lot. Usually around 10,000 on work from home day but this always includes a brisk 35 min walk and 15-20 mins walking for the school run. Today I’ve been out and about and it’s almost 16,000. Some days it’s 5,000 if I don’t make the effort to increase it.

Holly2285 · 18/02/2024 18:24

I aim for 8000 a day. I have a desk job and work from home a couple of days a week so don't get many steps in. I do the school run twice a day so that helps. If I am low on steps I try to walk at lunch or do a workout when finish work.

I'm not sure how you can do that many steps in an evening just running around after kids. That's a lot of steps!!

pinkhousesarebest · 18/02/2024 18:28

I park the car and walk to work, walk back, walk for 20 minutes at lunch, live in a three story house and am pretty active at work.
I find it hard d to get past 8000 steps. Don’ know what to do ( except give up work to devote myself to walking).

Ratfinkstinkypink · 18/02/2024 18:31

More than my device records as most of my walking is done pushing my small person's wheelchair (I do quite often record a bike ride even when I have been nowhere near a bike though)

crackofdoom · 18/02/2024 18:45

I went to a gig on Friday night, and was amused that my phone recorded me as having done 5400 steps from an hour's jiggling on the spot 😆

Well, my average is about 5800, but I don't carry my phone when I'm wandering round the house, when I'm working on the allotment, when I go for a run, so 🤷‍♀️

Paddingtonthebear · 18/02/2024 18:51

this is just from my phone so not entirely accurate, there will be times I don’t have my phone on me too. I do a desk job working from home 5 days a week, but rarely use the car in the week and walk everywhere (school run, dog walk, nipping to shops etc)

How many steps do you do a day?
BusySittingDown · 18/02/2024 18:57

About 11,000 a day.

I used to average about 16,000 when I used to do the school run but I don't do one anymore.

I have a sedentary job but try and get out for a walk each day to get fresh air.

KThnxBye · 18/02/2024 18:58

Average for this year is 14,648 a day
Highest day this year is 34,891
Lowest daily tally 9,226

I walk a lot and regularly get above 35,000 but I’ve only had a few days ever where I’ve got up into the 60,000 plus range (by walking 28-30 miles in one day, not by waving my smartwatch arm up and down)

PastTheGin · 18/02/2024 19:03

Around 10 000 every day - 2 dog walks per day.

RedBarnOwl · 18/02/2024 19:08

Normally between 15,000 and 18,000 but I rarely sit down. The dogs are walked for 2/3 hours in a day and I have horses as well as live on a farm so there’s always something to do. The can go up much further than that during lambing.
