How many steps do you do a day?

SteppingStonesOfDoom · 18/02/2024 15:12

No reason, just being nosey :) I work from home at a desk 5 days a week and average around 11,000 steps a day (barely anything during work hours but then make up for it chasing the kids around on evenings and weekends). I thought this was about average since I’m overweight and not actively trying to keep my steps up. Friend is shocked and says I must be cheating somehow. So let me know- what’s your step count average and do you work to get it higher?

I've done 2 really active gym classes this morning, 90 mins in total plus walking into gym from big car park and back and that's just over 10k.
Think I need to try WFH and borrow a couple of kids each evening!

Weepingwillows12 · 18/02/2024 15:43

If in the office about 5-6000 unless I go out for a walk specially. WFH days when I am doing school run usually around 11,000 then weekends when I am out and about usually between 11-16,000. I make an effort to walk though so could easily do less.

Applespies23 · 18/02/2024 15:48

I walk to work and back. Chase DC around in the evening. Am on my feet all day as a teacher. Still only do 7000 steps on average. Only get above 10000 if I do a long walk at the weekend!
I tell myself my Fitbit is broken or I must have a very large stride length! I do have long legs 😂

NewName24 · 18/02/2024 15:50

On a working day ?
Usually under 1000

On a NWD ?
Usually 6000 - 8000

Projectme · 18/02/2024 15:51

My watch shows a daily average of 4955 per day 😱 that's been over last 4 weeks. (i really don't know why I have a fitness watch, I don't use it for anything other than telling the time!) I sit at a desk for 5.5 hours a day. I have plenty of time to be active before/after work I'm just bloody lazy...might explain why I'm overweight 🙄

FabFebHalfTerm · 18/02/2024 15:55

@SteppingStonesOfDoom

do you eat a lot of omelettes?

im not sure at the moment as I need a new Apple Watch/fit but/something, to count my steps.

i had a cheap 'fit bit' for years that worked perfectly, when it finally died I ordered another, it was shite, so got another one, which died very quickly.

I don't know what to buy now?

my latest 'thing' is committing to walking at least 11 minutes a day. It usually ends up being around an hour, but as long as it's 11 minutes I get my ✅ for the day.

any comments for fit bit v Apple Watch etc welcome!!

@Applespies23 yeah my little legs get more steps in, but the downside is I have to walk a lot faster to cover the same distance!!

I can match taller people step for step and fall behind all the time!

Goldenmemories · 18/02/2024 15:58

20 000 to 30 000.

Tisfortired · 18/02/2024 15:59

I agree that sounds a lot for somebody working a desk job FT from home. I don’t drive and have a 30 minute walk to my sons school. There and back x 2 and a dog walk my Fitbit tells me I do 13,000 a day.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 18/02/2024 16:01

Anywhere between 12-20k a day. I'm a dog walker.

SteppingStonesOfDoom · 18/02/2024 16:06

FUPAgirl · 18/02/2024 15:17

I don't understand how you cover 5 miles 'chasing' the dc around in the evening, it definitely doesn't sound accurate - I can see your friends point

I don’t manage it on an evening, but it ups my steps during the week so the weekend averages it out to 10k? I probably only do 5,000-8,000 during the week and then 15,000-20,000 on a weekend day?

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 18/02/2024 16:07

I'm really surprised your count is that high OP if that's an average day. I would be at a maximum of 5k with that sort of day so I think your friend has a point!

If I'm being lazy I'm at about 3k but a workday is probably 14k. I walk to and from my office and although it's a desk job I'm reasonably active moving about the building throughout the day.

SteppingStonesOfDoom · 18/02/2024 16:08

AHFaemale · 18/02/2024 15:24

Please tell me what you use to count your steps. I'd like to start foing that.

There’s a step counter on my phone so I just checked that? I did have a watch but it counted every time I moved my hand as a step so I was doing thousands when I typed or washed up 😂

Harrysmummy246 · 18/02/2024 16:08

I work on my feet, all day, so usually 10k by lunchtime. Think my highest ever was 26k.
'Only' on 8.2 k today as I went rowing instead of running and the dogs only had a short walk before we went out for lunch. It'll be past 10k before the end of the day I'm sure.

Sparklfairy · 18/02/2024 16:10

20,000-25,000 on days I exercise (3-4 times a week). Today I've done just 2066 and I doubt it'll go much higher than that Smile

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/02/2024 16:11

About 590 as I wfh

SteppingStonesOfDoom · 18/02/2024 16:12

No? Why? I like them but maybe eat them once or twice a year?

SteppingStonesOfDoom · 18/02/2024 16:14

To everyone asking, I do the school run twice a day which is usually about 1k there and 1k back, then again in the afternoon? Then walk the kids and dog on an evening. Like I said earlier, I don’t usually manage 10,000 on a work day, but do enough on a weekend to pull the weekly average up?

OP posts:
Pickingmyselfup · 18/02/2024 16:15

On average I think it's about 15,000 but my days vary wildy.

On a day where I've walked the kids to school then back to work, done my shift, gone back for the kids and then an evening run it's close to 30,000. On a weekend day when I've just been lounging and pottering it's less than 5,000.

I use Google fit to track mine through my phone, my watch thinks I do steps when I move my arm. It's probably fairly accurate, I pretty much always have my phone on me.

socks1107 · 18/02/2024 16:23

Around 18000 per day

FoodieToo · 18/02/2024 16:26

About 18 k a day . That includes daily walk and I am pretty active in my job as a teacher . Still a little overweight though.......

Fitbit should replace your device for free if it breaks within its warranty and you have bought it brand new. It’s a long warranty (if I remember rightly 2 years) I had my charge 3 replaced once and my versa 2 was replaced 3 times! It was shit and claimed to be waterproof but the evidence said otherwise.

I have an Apple Watch now and I love it, I love my gadgets and try to use as many features as possible and use it for calls, to listen to music and books, to measure my health and fitness etc…
I bought my partner the basic SE watch which is the much cheaper version but does what he needs and is more like a very fancy Fitbit. If you wouldn’t get the full use of an expensive Apple Watch then the SE would be more reliable then a Fitbit. It’s also more accurate as I swim for an hour 5 days a week and my Fitbit counted that as steps, the Apple Watch counts calories, lengths, meters, strokes etc…

OP said she averages 10,000 steps a day but that doesn’t mean she’s doing that a day. I have days where I’m very active and do over 20,000 steps because I’m trying to lose weight. There are also days I only do 5,000 - 7,000 but it can average as 10,000+ because of the days I do more.
I have to walk 4-5 miles to do 10,000 and certainly couldn’t do it in my small house! Even on the days my Apple Watch says I’ve been standing over 12 hours and I’ve spent hours cleaning it’d only be 4,000 - 6,000 steps.

Since I had my Apple Watch from last June I’ve done a lot more exercise then before because I like to close the rings that are for daily goals of hours standing, calories burned and time moving.

Gophering · 18/02/2024 16:30

I feel disappointed if my step count is lower than 15k per day. I add steps wherever I can to try to be more active so I can eat more.

EC22 · 18/02/2024 16:30

For me to get 10000 steps I need to walk for 90 minutes.
I only get it if I try to.
I average about 5 getting 10 about twice per week.
