"A schoolboy is in a serious condition in hospital after being mauled by what is believed to be an XL bully.

Merseyside Police were called to Wadham Road in Bootle just after 5.20pm on Saturday following reports a dog had bitten an eight-year-old boy to the head in the communal area of flats nearby.

The boy was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries and required emergency surgery. He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition."

IMHO the ban doesn't go anywhere near far enough and all XL Bullys need to be put to sleep.

All dogs a toddler cannot beat in a fight can get in grave.

Grow up!

Grow up!

Indeed even a cat could if it wanted to really harm a baby or toddler.

How about all dogs that bite even a “hahahahaa playful little Pupper” (eg football sized dogs) get pts as soon as the first instance rather than its cute or it’s ok because they are little.

caringcarer · 11/02/2024 10:39

I agree. I can't understand why people would not prefer a smaller friendly dog in the first place. Those enormous dogs need to be walked miles and miles every day and I suspect many of them are shut up and not exercised enough.

Why would they need to be walked miles and miles?

All dogs need exercise but it's the active breeds that need the most exercise.

All dogs need mental stimulation too, but lots are left alone all day, with a quick trot round the block twice a day, but that's a different thread altogether.

All XL bullies need dragging into the streets and shot.

I expect you'd quite like to watch; you sound as if you would.

I'd rather that all XL bullies were taken to a vets to be quietly and painlessly euthanised.

OhmygodDont · 11/02/2024 15:44

I’m yet to meet an actual small friendly dog if you’re talking chihuahuas or those tiny little terriers. Hell even jack russels. All jumpy nippy little shits.

Emotionalsupportviper · 11/02/2024 15:44

Dear God - not another child savaged1

Sick of the it’s not the dog it’s the owners. In this case it goes hand in hand.

Exactly! In these instances it doesn't matter which of the two is "responsible". People are being killed and maimed - unfortunately we can't "cull" the idiot owners, so it has to be the dogs.

TripleDock · 11/02/2024 15:48

I would happily see this breed disappear. And their owners locked up and banned from ever owning animals.

However, I think the increased ownership and aggression of these animals is related to wider social issues. These idiots buy these dogs because they have nothing else to aspire to, have poor education and/or intelligence and have poor role models; they use these creatures as status symbols. Unless our country improves from a socio-economic perspective, I can see ownership of aggressive dogs just increasing. I do think these kind of people will move onto other vicious breeds and the problem will just shift around. Ownership of this kind of animal and poverty and deprivation go hand-in-hand.

Whilst I mainly agree it’s the owner, not the breed - if we look to the past when the scary dog of choice was a rotty or a gsd etc we saw far less dog attacks/deaths. The owners aren’t going to have become worse in all that time so I do think the breed is a factor

apparently searched for cane corsos have gone through the roof. They are big aggressive dogs too so will we have the same problem and the need for another ban?

Yup can see same thing happening with other scary breeds as they get banned one by one.

Dog. Licenses.

I’d like it to go further too

THIS I’m sorry but there is a strong connection between owners in poverty with drug use in depraved areas where they can’t even look after themselves! Council homes and HA should automatically ban them, I nearly dropped to my knees when I saw my local council had made it clear they would still be allowing xls in social housing!

People in social housing are usually there because of limited earnings/money which there is a huge connection with these dogs weather anyone cares to admit that or not I visit my mum she lives in a very nice area of town no social housing lucky if I’ve seen more than one, I go and visit my auntie in a very deprived area of town 90% is social housing and they are everywhere you turn with a tiny teenager being walked up the road!

Needless to say my auntie was furious having 3 very young children that this decision was made!

And IM sorry but people on here cant wait to denigrate social housing tenants We arent all one big homogenous mass you know I live in a social housing one bedoom flat (all im entitled to as i havent reproduced) and i have not seen any XL bullys here. Not saying there arent any but i havent seen them. My downstairs neighbour opposite has a cavapoo Are people really saying that her dog should be taken away. We had a cat who everybody else adored too She had to be PTS in 2016. Oh and the alkie who lives underneath us spends all his money on booze I seriously doubt he would get an XL bully as it would eat into his booze fund.

Im 50 years old and have never even been drunk...............not once How many of the middle classes on here can say the same.

Does anyone know out if all the attacks how many were 9+ years and brought up from a pup?

Just curious.

I dont know much about these dogs but I dont think many will reach past 9 with the size of them. Bigger dogs dont live as long

Emotionalsupportviper · 11/02/2024 15:50

Bargello · 11/02/2024 10:12

But these things are soppy, soft and wouldn't hurt a fly! They're nanny dogs, fur babies, the bestest boys ever! They want to lick you to death and not rip your throat out! It's the owners' fault, it's the deed not the breed. And what about chihuahuas?

(Just preparing the bingo card for when the apologists for these beasts turn up and try to defend their existence).

Poor wee lad.

You missed "velvet hippos" off your card.

Cane corsos, like other mastiffs or molossars are a recognised breed. They have already come under the previous dangerous dogs act and the latest exclusion ban description of XL bullies doesn’t apply to them (same as Rotties, English, Neapolitan mastiffs etc). @Bruisername Cane Corsos are not aggressive, they are protective guard dogs rather like GSDs, livestock guardians and rotties. Very different lineage (are breed established for 100s of years) and breeding purposes than XL bullies. It’s not a reasoned comparison.

i ended up in hospital after being attacked by GSD . Was very traumatic . He bit twice again then was put down .

DungareesAndTrombones · 11/02/2024 15:54

There's one at the top of my road and the man tends to walk it at dusk/dark. Chain collar (obviously) and the owner stands in a copse of trees in the local park while the dog barks its head off. I have no fucking idea what I would do if it went for my Golden Retriever??? Not a clue.

He was once coming down the road at the same time as me and my dog and he dragged his dog back to his house.

I've only heard it barking in the house since the ban. If I see it without a muzzle I'll be on the phone reporting it.

SkankingWombat · 11/02/2024 15:54

I'm confused by the PPs who have said licensing wouldn't work as it would be too costly: surely the cost of obtaining the licence would cover the cost to the government? It would be self-funding. I agree there might be a cost to the country up front in setting up the administrative infrastructure, but this would be recouped once existing owners start applying. After that, the system would support itself with new owners/dogs.

I would go further TBH: a DNA sample could be stored for each dog on its file (cost built into the licence fee), and used to convict owners who allow fouling. Again, the fine would be, as a minimum, enough to cover the full cost of collecting and testing the sample (ie wardens walking routes or responding to reports to find and take samples plus the lab costs), so the 'service' pays for itself. It could also be used where dogs have bitten someone but it has been difficult to track the owner.

bombastix · 11/02/2024 15:55

There is a solution to the where over a certain size are banned from social housing- the owners won't exactly be missed by their neighbours. Breach it and you lose your tenancy for life.

JenniferBooth · 11/02/2024 15:58

I find the 'I prefer dogs to people' thing rather irritating

Ive never seen or heard a dog judging someone for being a social housing tenant Or judge someones weight or size etc

Fishbones1 · 11/02/2024 15:59

Seriously, why don’t people learn? Are we really that stupid as a species that we continue to want to live with an animal that repeatedly kills and mauls people? Are some people just thick? Maybe they don’t care? You’d rather look hard and run the risk of your dog biting your kid’s head or ripping the throat out of your baby/toddler/grandma?

The sheer ignorance of it beggars belief. And people are STILL buying XLB puppies as evidenced on the first page of this thread. Just why why why? Surely ANY other dog will do? Why the fuck that one?? After news reports of almost weekly mailings and deaths???

I just can’t get my head around the wilful stupidity of some people sorry

Livelovebehappy · 11/02/2024 15:59

Again, crappy owners who just don’t know how to look after a dog. The type of people this breed attracts, are the sort who dont give a toss. Like the woman in jaywick who died after an attack last week - it’s since been said there was a litter of puppies in the house which she was poking with a broom handle to get a reaction from the mum. And it worked, but cost here her life. I say start banning people owning animals if they’re reported to the RSPCA or police. Or everyone has to pay a large licence fee to keep dogs. I reported someone accross the road from me who keeps their dog outside in the garden 24/7. The poor thing is out in all weathers and barks continuously. Ive even tried talking to the owners, but typically they’re as thick as pig shit and just answer with a load of abuse. Two months later no sign of any action taken by RSPCA or anyone else.

I don’t think that’s right. The owner had told her to use the broom to separate fighting puppies. As always a stupid owner and his mil paid the ultimate price.

i know a few people who have been bitten because the owner has asked them to take a bone or food from their dog. That’s why kids need better education around dogs so they know if asked to do that the answer is a resounding no.

RollOnSpringDays · 11/02/2024 16:02

Yes a lot of the attacks happen in the home surroundings so the ban will make no difference to the number of attacks. I’d go one step further and put them all to sleep.

JenniferBooth · 11/02/2024 16:04

BusyMummy001 · 11/02/2024 14:53

If my dogs have never even encountered a delivery person in their lives, merely been heard to bark when the motion detector on the drive sounds, then how I am responsible for any fear people walking to my front door may have? Am I not allowed to responsibly own dogs in my own home, even after coming face to face with two armed burglars in a neighbours home 3 days ago and now finding myself home alone for a week?

That people are afraid of mere idea of the possible presence of dogs that they have never seen means the issue is one of the media frenzy and a recent spate of aggressive dog attacks due to irresponsible owners - not my tiny dogs that are never even allowed to greet anyone inside my hallway. They are shut away… they are spaniels, not rottweillers.

Bully xls and similar dogs need to dealt with asap before we end up with a generation of unneccesarily anxious dog phobics.

THIS!

JennyBeanR · 11/02/2024 16:05

todayshappening · 11/02/2024 11:06

As an XL bully owner seeing this again saddens me. There’s a definite correlation between XL bully + irresponsible owner = dangerous dog. I know of a number of well looked after, well trained bullies who are so well behaved and none aggressive it shows how good a dog they can be.
BSL doesn’t work. Licence and background checks. It’s not difficult. If you want a shotgun or any other type of firearm you need to meet a certain criteria. Why not the same if you want a dog over a certain size and weight. The current ban is just a knee jerk reaction by a failing government to try and look like they’re doing something.

Because if your XL bully decides to attack there's absolutely nothing most people can do to overcome it. I'm anti gun but this analogy is ridiculous. The shotgun doesn't have a will of its own so of course background checks can be valid there.
How the hell can you try to justify owning these beasts?

I’m sorry… the grandma who was killed was poking the puppies with a stick to anger the mum dog?
