"A schoolboy is in a serious condition in hospital after being mauled by what is believed to be an XL bully.

Merseyside Police were called to Wadham Road in Bootle just after 5.20pm on Saturday following reports a dog had bitten an eight-year-old boy to the head in the communal area of flats nearby.

The boy was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries and required emergency surgery. He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition."

IMHO the ban doesn't go anywhere near far enough and all XL Bullys need to be put to sleep.

How do other countries manage dog ownership? Or are they like this country where dog owners are so entitled to think their pet trumps everyone else? (Not all owners of course)

One thing for sure, an XL bulldog, humanely put to sleep, will suffer a hell of a lot less than the people maimed and killed by them.
I can't say XL "bully" it's just too cutesy, they aren't cute.

I think Pitbull type is a fairly good general term for these dogs, agree with you that bully is a bit too cutesy!

abesnt · 11/02/2024 14:18

Does anyone know out if all the attacks how many were 9+ years and brought up from a pup?

Just curious.

It seems to me that when given free reign humans are very prone to being overly anthropomorphic about dogs, not such a problem with a small dog but lethal when it comes to Pitbull types and other attack dogs.
I don't know what the answer is, dogs are the human companion animal and deeply woven into human society. Let's hope we don't end up with a worst case scenario where we have packs of feral fighting dogs roaming around.

If dogs are so great why don't you go and live in dog city where all the businesses are staffed by dogs all the cars are driven by dogs etc.

This is what I’m picturing and it sounds amazing. I’m packing my bags as we speak.

Just wait until the warmer weather when many people are out for a walk etc and then note the idiots where the dog is taking them out for a walk, an no muzzle on the dog that is - IE against the law re XL

IMO, all large, strong dogs must be muzzled in public and on a short lead not one of those where the do is more than 7/8 feet away from the owner.

I've always said and sadly this is another example in the making, no good having new rules/laws when they are hardly to be enforced

megletthesecond · 11/02/2024 14:23

Yanbu. But the idiots who own those dogs don't tend to pay any attention to the news or laws. They live in small houses with their pets cooped up.

Sadly the failure to nip this issue in the bud is impacting the perception of all dogs and their owners. I now have a ‘note’ on my Amazon Prime delivery record that we have ‘potentially dangerous dogs’ - when we have a 6mo spaniel puppy and an adolescent sprocker who barks when the doorbell goes (given my neighbour was burgled this week, I am not inclined to discourage the barking).

Neither are allowed into the hallway when we answer the door out of consideration for delivery staff who may be wary of animals and - frankly - because it is easier to take parcels in without tripping over two excited dogs.

However, we have had staff refuse to come onto our driveway and literally call us from outside to collect items from the pavement. I’ve had to stop using them as a result - irritating as hell for us, but clearly fuelling anxiety and fear-inducing for delivery staff.

It is irresponsible dog ownership that has got us here - and the desire to own a Bully XL is a major indicator of that mindset.

If people afraid of your dogs, that's on you, not random other dogs around the country.

YesSirMam · 11/02/2024 14:27

They need to go. Owners need to be jailed & all XLB need to be removed off streets.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 11/02/2024 14:34

Meadowfinch · 11/02/2024 13:52

Yes, they are need to be PTS.

We aren't allowed to keep lions in domestic homes and these creatures are equally dangerous. They all need to be euthanased now. We can't wait the 15 years for them all to die out.

On the up side, hopefully this couple will be imprisoned, then banned from ever keeping another dog, making the local community safer.

Perhaps the boy's family can bring a civil suit against them too, and bankrupt them, if they haven't bothered to get insurance. Penalties need to get MUCH harsher to get through to these selfish idiots.

It shouldn't be civil, it should be criminal with time in prison for attempted murder.

I my home country, indivdual concils have dog licences based on size of dogs and stricter rules on keeping certain types of dogs muzzled and on a lead. Often, you are also restricted to how many dogs you can own.
However, the mentality around dog ownership is also vastly different...

I own dogs, I love dogs but I am totally in favour of licences. I am also in favour of having any type/ breed of dogs that have been developed for fighting muzzled and on lead when outside. That is regardless of size.

Sadly I agree with others that all XL bullies should be pts asap.

The type/ breed is unpredictable, so even very experienced dog owners will not be able to know for certain if their dog will turn until it has happened.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 11/02/2024 14:45

Part of the problem is the UK has high population density so all these dogs are more in your face. Maybe also because mutts don't seem to be a thing anymore and they're generally more chilled out.

Also people here are a very soft touch with animals in general. However, they train their animals very well compared to what I've seen in pretty much every other country I've been to or lived in, sometimes when I read threads on here (of course not the tragic ones) moaning about out of control dogs I think these people don't know how good they have it !

Bruisername · 11/02/2024 14:50

Respect goes both ways as well. The way some parents let their kids behave around dogs is totally unacceptable. And that’s before starting on the adults!!

they are not teddy bears waiting for a cuddle!

BusyMummy001 · 11/02/2024 14:53

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 11/02/2024 14:25

If people afraid of your dogs, that's on you, not random other dogs around the country.

If my dogs have never even encountered a delivery person in their lives, merely been heard to bark when the motion detector on the drive sounds, then how I am responsible for any fear people walking to my front door may have? Am I not allowed to responsibly own dogs in my own home, even after coming face to face with two armed burglars in a neighbours home 3 days ago and now finding myself home alone for a week?

That people are afraid of mere idea of the possible presence of dogs that they have never seen means the issue is one of the media frenzy and a recent spate of aggressive dog attacks due to irresponsible owners - not my tiny dogs that are never even allowed to greet anyone inside my hallway. They are shut away… they are spaniels, not rottweillers.

Bully xls and similar dogs need to dealt with asap before we end up with a generation of unneccesarily anxious dog phobics.

It sounds like you’re trying to place the blame on an 8 year old boy who was mailed by a dangerous dog, from a known breed of dangerous dogs. Really? That’s were you want to take this?

No sorry I wasn’t referencing this attack. My posts through the thread have all been about better regulation. These breeds are not acceptable

I was more responding to other posts saying all dogs are a menace

and in terms of respect going both ways - dog owners need to be responsible as well nd I support better regulation

GreenClock · 11/02/2024 15:02

I’m an animal lover and don’t say this lightly, but it’s time for these dogs to be euthanised humanely. I think that the recent laws have done nothing to curb the chavscum folk that own them. In fact, maybe XLBs’ status has actually been heightened? These people love to flout the law.

OhmygodDont · 11/02/2024 15:07

So relevant to this attack but I’m on some camping pages and xl owners have been asking what sites will still allow them. Some have said they will be.

Do these Xl’s will be muzzled full time for upto a week or two to be able to be on the family holiday in a tent… which when it’s hot it’s boiling. Or are they going to break the law and not muzzle. Neither sound like good owners tho.

The Cane Corso will likely come under XL bully anyway if it meets the measurements(most do). They are not a recognised breed in the UK. Decent owners should have exempted them. But they won’t have done.

Cane corsos, like other mastiffs or molossars are a recognised breed. They have already come under the previous dangerous dogs act and the latest exclusion ban description of XL bullies doesn’t apply to them (same as Rotties, English, Neapolitan mastiffs etc). @Bruisername Cane Corsos are not aggressive, they are protective guard dogs rather like GSDs, livestock guardians and rotties. Very different lineage (are breed established for 100s of years) and breeding purposes than XL bullies. It’s not a reasoned comparison.

ScruffMuffin · 11/02/2024 15:19

Haven't RTFT, but I'm sure someone will be along in a minute (if they haven't already) to say they're misunderstood, great big softies, great pets, etc. That begs the question of why anyone would choose to own one, when plenty of other breeds make excellent pets too.

In most cases, out of control dogs = irresponsible owners and inadequate training. In this case, the dogs have been bred for their size and strength. I don't think we should have them at all.

redboots765 · 11/02/2024 09:22

That's three attacks in the two weeks isn't it? I'm in the put them all to sleep camp. I see a couple walking one, they have a tiny baby in a pram. Makes me shudder every time I see them. (haven't seen them since the muzzle rules came in)
You have to wonder how many are not being walked now and that will lead to a very frustrated dog.

Have you reported them?

Oh god my NDN just got a pup XLB these news stories are worrying me :(

He’s broken the law. Report him.

PotentialQuitter · 11/02/2024 15:32

Also tired of the 'it's the owners, not the breed argument'. Based on this principle, why not let people keep tigers as pets?! Because it would be too dangerous.

Think there needs to be an anonymous reporting hotline set up with local task forces to take action.
