The Only True Dinner Plates Are White

I was killing time in the homeware district of my local big Sainsbury's today when I stumbled upon the dinner plate selection. I was distressed to see such a myriad of patterns and hues flagrantly displayed. Why would anybody want anything but clean clear crisp white plates? I don't want to accidentality misplace a nugget or waffle fry amongst a geometric jungle of shapes and shades. Surely the beauty of a blueberry pancake would be dulled when presented on a blue and white oriental landscape? And you can tell when white plates still have congealed egg on them from the other day.

AIBU?

Obviously not, but why do shops sell stuff like that?

I bought this set in 1995 in Makro. Got rid of most of it when I moved house years ago but fell in love with it again. Have got a full set & then some on ebay. I dont care if noone else likes it - I love it ☺️

Predominantly white and with a simple border looks nice with the widest range of foods but I'm not super fussed as long as they're not dark colours.

Cups though, they have to be white on the inside or they make tea look wrong

IloveAslan · 09/02/2024 01:45

I've never bought plain white plates, and never will - I think they are awful. I get a lot of pleasure from my blue and white Johnson Brothers Indies ones, I've had them for many years and don't plan on replacing them, ever (I have many, many, plates!)

Overtheatlantic · 09/02/2024 03:19

Every day plates are from White Company and yes, they are white. However, for special occasions we will drag out my DH’s great aunts set of crown ducal orange. I love to see a slice of red velvet cake on these lovelies. (Photo to show pattern)

I'm not a huge fan of coloured or patterned plates, but no- I think food looks better on a black plate.

This.
We have black

Rattenbury · 09/02/2024 03:47

This thread has just reminded me of the plates we had growing up in the 1990s which were most definitely not plain white (just fell down an eBay rabbit hole browsing the pattern!)

I have Fiesta ware a gift from my husband one mother's day. They are Scarlett and Sunflower. You would have a fit at my daughter's dishes. An assortment of Fiesta ware colors

WaltzingWaters · 09/02/2024 04:10

Plain white ones are so dull. I just got the dark blue set from Sainsbury’s. Matches my new kitchen.

Somepeoplearesnippy · 09/02/2024 04:34

Plain white anything is depressing. It reminds me of being at the dentist where everything is designed for hygiene and practicality not for pleasure.

KimberleyClark · 09/02/2024 04:38

Well I love my inherited Portmeirion Botanic Garden stuff. Different people like different things shock horror.

Highlighta · 09/02/2024 04:52

Oh no. Are crisp white plates the crisp white shirt?

How can a plate be described as crisp?

I have a mixture. You cupboard sounds quite boring OP.

The pair of you have swept me back to 2002 corporate flatshares 😮 the rough black ikea plates that make a scraping sound that sets your teeth on edge!, the polite conversation while watching big brother with people you didn’t really know!

I need to lie down now

My black crockery is expensive, smooth and shiny, and I am delighted to say that I have never watched Big Brother, nor any of the subsequent copycat programmes, in my life.

marshmallowburn · 09/02/2024 06:03

Yes sorry pp, not a fan of black or square, or a hexagon. Love white with a beautiful patterned edge.

Lwrenn · 09/02/2024 06:06

Shocked at the blatant platcism going on here.

Sorry 😁

I hate all white anything. Plates, walls, towels, bedding. Boring and depressingly clinical all of it.

Worst of all is when people say a white babygro is the best outfit for a baby. So many beautiful patterns and colours I'm baffled when anyone chooses white.

Not that is sacrilidge babies under 6 weeks must be dressed in white babygros it is the law [gravel]

I would have to use that everyday, it would make my heart sing.

Oooh! Where from?!

Gosh, I bought it online 10 years ago, I think it's long since been discontinued.

greenacrylicpaint · 09/02/2024 06:21

white plates have the wibe of school cantine for me. with grey cuttlery marks of course...

our plates are a very light sage colour.
and if we need more our reserve plates are classic churchill stoneware similar to this.

This is Peak Mumsnet. It's like some fearsome ancient Greek punishment for MNers. Condemned to suffer the indignity of non-white plates forever because you "hate waste" just that much.

I'm bedridden with covid and this has cheered me right up 😂

Crying. Prometheus had his liver eaten by an eagle every night. Modern women have beige plates.

theywenttoseainasievetheydid · 09/02/2024 06:31

@LunaNorth Eternal Beau was much sought after I remember and top of the wedding lists!
I had Denby Baroque for over 30 years and replaced it with Denby Kiln. Big expensive mistake and my husband eats of a melamine plate I keep for the grandchildren.

Simonjt · 09/02/2024 06:36

Traditional metal silver tone plates and bowls here. The only plates I dislike are matte effect plates, I don’t know why, but I prefer a shiney plate.

Ohyoudodoyou · 09/02/2024 06:54

We had a cream ridged edge Waitrose set for years for daily use, m and s white maxim for dinner parties/ Christmas.
We chipped and smashed the cream so took the remainder to charity shop.
Filled the drawer with all the white maxim crockery and now I love opening it to see how clean and tidy it is for daily use. M and s no longer do the side plates so big mistake m and s!
I like cake and puddings on pretty plates/etched glass.
I personally dislike eating meals from patterned plates but each to their own. I like some of the vintage sets shown here.

ChocolateCandle · 09/02/2024 07:06

We used all white M&S for years alongside a collection of blue and white. Now have several collections - Emma Bridgewater (various red and green motifs), green and white, plain white. Blue and white, pink and white and various for light lunch or tea. I love having a choice, depending on mood, food and occasion. Must stop collecting now, though!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 09/02/2024 07:12

Denby imperial blue here (for the last 25 years or so), the set will outlive us all
