The Only True Dinner Plates Are White

I was killing time in the homeware district of my local big Sainsbury's today when I stumbled upon the dinner plate selection. I was distressed to see such a myriad of patterns and hues flagrantly displayed. Why would anybody want anything but clean clear crisp white plates? I don't want to accidentality misplace a nugget or waffle fry amongst a geometric jungle of shapes and shades. Surely the beauty of a blueberry pancake would be dulled when presented on a blue and white oriental landscape? And you can tell when white plates still have congealed egg on them from the other day.

AIBU?

Obviously not, but why do shops sell stuff like that?

Those are colourful cups and teapots, which is different. More ornamental. Dinner plates are different.

Lizzieregina · 08/02/2024 21:40

@Arabellla they’re lovely!

I actually do have white corningware. They’re
virtually indestructible and also really lightweight. I have arthritis so find chunky dishes heavy to manage.

I do have lovely fancy China that’s got a grey/orange/gold pattern. And I have gorgeous Christmas China that I use from November to NY.

Assuming it was @Arabellla's post you meant to quote she said she had the plates too. Which are going to be 1000% more attractive than anything white!

I'm a private chef and use clients own plates when I go to their houses. I don't mind coloured plain or white but hate having to use patterned crockery as the food presentation is never as good. The only exception would be if I'm doing Spanish or Mexican food as authentically the cuisine is served on brightly patterned plates

I will be your worst nightmare, OP, as I have this collection, including the plates.

I bought some white plates from IKEA the other day for my mum and it depressed me.

Edited

Is that Pip Studio? They're really lovely 😊

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 08/02/2024 21:42

Ah, but-what about white plates with a different colour back?

turkeyboots · 08/02/2024 21:42

I love a patterned plate, but not for eating off. Sadly its taken me years to realise that so I have lovely patterned collection which takes up all cupboard space while we eat off £1 white IKEA plates which mainly live in the dishwasher.

DuchessOfSausage · 08/02/2024 21:42

Mine are plain round white ones
from IKEA

LunaNorth · 08/02/2024 21:45

You need some Eternal Beau, OP.

SlightlyJaded · 08/02/2024 21:49

OP I WILL BE YOUR FRIEND

White. Round. And importantly, fine/thin. Porcelain or china but not pottery or stoneware.

I too have no interest in searching through a botanical garden, neon kaleidoscope or Batik print for the last pea. I do not want to see my beige chicken breast looking dull because it is set against a vomit of colour, thank you very much.

HOWEVER

I have a set of Sara Miller for Portmerion china - side plates, cups, saucers and teapot from set attached. I love them with all my heart and these are allowed out for tea and cake.

Mine are a nice, deep emerald. Don’t scream.

Isseywith3witchycats · 08/02/2024 21:20

sorry NEW2024 we have Denby but ours are a compromise plain white in the middle with a dark green rim

That sounds nice, it’s the very chunky ones I’m not keen on

Absolutely.

There is a big difference in plates you eat lasagne or shepherd's pie off of and ones for French Fancies and cherry bakewells. The former must be white, the latter can look like a lingerie shop window if you must.

mine are off white does that count ? I agree though, one of my friends has coloured weird textured plates and I hate eating off them it's just wrong.

YNK · 08/02/2024 21:58

I have willow pattern.
I love it!

bridgetreilly · 08/02/2024 21:58

Why have boring when you can have fabulous?

BreakfastAtMimis · 08/02/2024 21:58

Are you all old? Wink White plates are terribly old-fashioned. I'm 44 and my favourite plates are purple.

Mysterian · 08/02/2024 21:58

Textured earthenware is worse. Hate cups like that as well. The feeling as my lips touch a rough rim is horrid. Smooth and glossy is the only way.

I've had for years an ivory corelle set with blue flowers around the edge. Plain enough, and I like that they are light and thin. I have been eyeing up a white set of Maxwell Williams, but just can't justify getting rid of something perfectly serviceable.

I don't like square plates either!

Rufilla · 08/02/2024 22:00

My crockery design pet hate is the chunky yellow, blue and red stuff with faint brushstroke look that was around late 90s to early 00s. I loathed it then too. I saw an episode of Friends the other day and seeing them all drinking out of big, thick yellow, blue, whatever mugs brought it all back.

Matt black is my favourite.

NewKingontheBlock · 08/02/2024 22:00

Plain white all the way for me but don’t mind a colourful vintage tea set when partaking in tea and cake, adds to the old fashioned ambiance, would be completely wrong if I served up the breaded cod I had tonight though.

NewKingontheBlock · 08/02/2024 22:05

I do think blue and white Cornish ware is lovely if you live in a diddy cottage , it’s very charming I think

Same, I have only ever had black crockery since the 70s. Food looks so much more colourful on black plates.

The pair of you have swept me back to 2002 corporate flatshares 😮 the rough black ikea plates that make a scraping sound that sets your teeth on edge!, the polite conversation while watching big brother with people you didn’t really know!

I need to lie down now

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 08/02/2024 22:08

You are 100% correct on this. Don’t listen to everyone who’s wrong. Fully correct.

IndividualApplicant · 08/02/2024 22:11

Mine are all grey. As is most of my house Shock
