The Only True Dinner Plates Are White

Mysterian · 08/02/2024 21:03

I was killing time in the homeware district of my local big Sainsbury's today when I stumbled upon the dinner plate selection. I was distressed to see such a myriad of patterns and hues flagrantly displayed. Why would anybody want anything but clean clear crisp white plates? I don't want to accidentality misplace a nugget or waffle fry amongst a geometric jungle of shapes and shades. Surely the beauty of a blueberry pancake would be dulled when presented on a blue and white oriental landscape? And you can tell when white plates still have congealed egg on them from the other day.

AIBU?

Obviously not, but why do shops sell stuff like that?

I do think blue and white Cornish ware is lovely if you live in a diddy cottage , it’s very charming I think

We do and have some creamware and Dorset Delft

moggerhanger · 08/02/2024 22:25

I have Blue Denmark interspersed with charity shop Willow Pattern and I love it. White plates are fine for restaurants, but rather dull for home.

Is that Pip Studio? They're really lovely 😊

Thanks, it's the Maxwell & Williams Enchanté collection.

I'm so surprised people like it!

DappledThings · 08/02/2024 21:40

Assuming it was @Arabellla's post you meant to quote she said she had the plates too. Which are going to be 1000% more attractive than anything white!

Yes, plates too!

This is a stock image as mine are in the cupboard.

Black = naff
Square = TOWIE
Pottery or Earthenware = gritty and unclean
Thick/heavy (even white) = cheap
Blue/White Cornish - Seaside AirBnB / Country Cottages only
Fine white porcelain / china = correct
Pretty painted botanical/jungle/french chateau/faux vintage = tea and cake only

JanglingJack · 08/02/2024 22:44

I'd go with any colour as long as they weren't chipped.

I must wash up with all the grace of a hippo having it's first dip in weeks.

Maireas · 08/02/2024 22:44

@SlightlyJaded - I think we were separated at birth.

QuestionableMouse · 08/02/2024 22:46

Because they're full and it's nice to have colour in our lives?

Agree ,mine are Wedgwood bone China and used every day, bowls and side plates to match. All bought in sales or as seconds and have lasted for years. If I want to make the table look special I do it with tablecloths, candles, flowers, and delicious food.

JaceLancs · 08/02/2024 22:48

I cannot imagine plain crockery in my life

Meant to say my first dinner service, back in the day, was from habitat, plain white China with an orange band round the edge, all gone now, but every so often I come across a shard that has been used as a crock in the bottom of a pot and migrated into a flower bed, always makes me smile at memories. I was so proud of it, though carrying it home on the tube nearly killed me!

GodspeedJune · 08/02/2024 22:56

Yanbu. Plates, towels and bed linen should all
be white.

sesquipedalian · 08/02/2024 23:03

JaceLancs, you are clearly a girl after my own heart. Mine is blue and white - mostly Spode Blue Room, because I just love it, and I like the fact that my plates are the same but different. I also have a German Christmas set. But I come over all covetous when scrolling through e-bay - and to those who say they couldn’t justify getting rid of an old set to replace it with a new one, who said anything about getting rid? (I have a large collection of jugs, too.)

All those things in white look so sad and clinical. I can't imagine ever choosing them.

I was given one white babygro. I dyed it a lovely emerald green.

No, no. Crisp and fresh. You’ve reminded me of my bias for white and cream baby clothes too.

White and cream baby clothes make me genuinely a bit sad!

Ghuunvg · 08/02/2024 23:11

White dinner plates = lower/middle middle class

Moier · 08/02/2024 23:18

Distressed???
I can't get over that bit to be honest.
I don't like white plates.. reminds me of hospitals.

fitflopqueen · 08/02/2024 23:25

White bone China plates & bowls for everyday but also have mix of Spode - blue & white and coloured/patterned serving dishes to cheer it all up.

Lilyhatesjaz · 08/02/2024 23:32

My plates are all patterned all the same type but different patterns it Makes dishing up easy as I know which plate belongs to whom
I have about 20 bowls no 2 are the same.
Non of my bed linen is white.
Non of my walls are white.
Maybe I'm still living in the 80s but I don't care, colour makes me happy, some colours I can just look at and absorb.

YoongiMarryMe · 08/02/2024 23:36

I hate white plates! I can never find colourful dinner plates that I like - so many have pretty edges but are mainly white. So we now all eat off side plates Grin

This is one of the sets, we also have a colourful dog set and a set with different animals (giraffe, toucan, etc) Makes me happy!

Agreed.

I just bought a new set, as my old set we had had for nearly 20years.

White, porcelain with a slim gold edge trim. gorgeous. can't use in microwave tho. and coat about 9million quid even though they were from an outlet store.

NannyGythaOgg · 08/02/2024 23:39

Mine are all white and I wouldn't have them any other way.

I have voted that you are being unreasonable for 2 reasons

The most important one being that I love mine, I think they are classy and they work with everything

BUT

I love eating at friends houses who don't have all white plates. All my friends have more money than me - BUT I have white plates and they don't - so I am more classy

Not serious in any way - but I do love mine even more after visiting others
