The Only True Dinner Plates Are White

Mysterian · 08/02/2024 21:03

I was killing time in the homeware district of my local big Sainsbury's today when I stumbled upon the dinner plate selection. I was distressed to see such a myriad of patterns and hues flagrantly displayed. Why would anybody want anything but clean clear crisp white plates? I don't want to accidentality misplace a nugget or waffle fry amongst a geometric jungle of shapes and shades. Surely the beauty of a blueberry pancake would be dulled when presented on a blue and white oriental landscape? And you can tell when white plates still have congealed egg on them from the other day.

AIBU?

Obviously not, but why do shops sell stuff like that?

YABU. I loathe white plates. I think they look cheap and tacky.

SarahAndQuack · 08/02/2024 23:41

White plates are either practical when you don't have much money, or easy if you don't feel confident you're going to keep liking something - because that way, as a PP says, you can concentrate on the rest of the table and let the crockery just be a 'meh' backdrop. But they don't make food look very nice, do they?

I get that the OP is enjoyably tongue-in-cheek, but if you're worried your crockery isn't giving that 'clean crisp clear' vibe, the problem is that you're meant to wash the fuckers. Not that the colour is wrong.

Because I have cool ones from Asda. White with black print. They're forests but weird ones so owls have horns etc. then the next print was similar vibe but underwater

Oh I have them too! I don’t often pay them much attention (too hungry) but when I do they’re bizarre. Wish I’d seen the underwater ones too

Black = naff
Square = TOWIE
Pottery or Earthenware = gritty and unclean
Thick/heavy (even white) = cheap
Blue/White Cornish - Seaside AirBnB / Country Cottages only
Fine white porcelain / china = correct
Pretty painted botanical/jungle/french chateau/faux vintage = tea and cake only

I will be your worst nightmare, OP, as I have this collection, including the plates.

I bought some white plates from IKEA the other day for my mum and it depressed me.

Oooh! Where from?!

Or lick them really well..

Jojobees · 08/02/2024 23:51

I don’t want patterns but my sage green earthenware dinner service is my favourite.

Arabellla · 08/02/2024 22:27

Yes, plates too!

This is a stock image as mine are in the cupboard.

See these are great! Beautiful, fun, but the bit the food actually goes on is white, so you can see it. Perfect!

I hate black plates or square ones

😃 Ours are both square and black. Love 'em.

Zoomerang · 08/02/2024 21:05

Agree.

Mine are inherited and beige. They’re awful, but I can’t bear the waste of swapping them for proper white ones.

Life is far too short to have beige crockery. Send them to the charity shop and buy yourself something you actually like.

iknowimcoming · 08/02/2024 23:57

We're a plain white household (aside from some funky John Lewis party/bbq bowls and serving dishes) BUT on a recent cookery course the tutor told us that food always looks amazing on turquoise plates/dishes and that we should buy them whenever we seem them!

AllTheChaos · 08/02/2024 23:58

JanglingJack · 08/02/2024 22:44

I'd go with any colour as long as they weren't chipped.

I must wash up with all the grace of a hippo having it's first dip in weeks.

This is why I loved my dishwasher till it broke 😊 Am desperately saving up for a new one before I break all my lovely (mostly not white!) China!

Caroparo52 · 08/02/2024 23:58

The collection of Royal China on display at Windsor Castle is mostly all highly decorative and tastefully colorful

AllTheChaos · 09/02/2024 00:02

Aaaaah @Caroparo52, is that the the Windsors choice though? They may be royal, but the properly posh people I’ve met all consider them (the royals) somewhat déclassé!

maximist · 09/02/2024 00:06

I have tasteful Denby Regency Green crockery for 'best' but for everyday I have a wonderful set of retro Denby which I've bought from auctions and eBay, and just love!

Grin

Yep. Really aristocratic types probably get their dogs to give the plates the once-over before shoving them back for service.

(I do love how this thread has turned from 'what is aesthetically acceptable' to 'I am considerably posher than yow'. Not that it started from an, ahem, clean slate as regards snobbery.)

Elphame · 09/02/2024 00:10

Plain white ones from IKEA here.

The "posh" set is plain white from Wedgwood but does have a fluted edge.

mathanxiety · 09/02/2024 00:10

You're wrong, OP.

Blue and white is the Top Choice.

I hate all white anything. Plates, walls, towels, bedding. Boring and depressingly clinical all of it.

Worst of all is when people say a white babygro is the best outfit for a baby. So many beautiful patterns and colours I'm baffled when anyone chooses white.

I respect you but NO

Right back atcha! I know I'm right 😂

ThinWomansBrain · 09/02/2024 00:16

I prefer white plates, but not that passionate about it.
Mugs that aren't white on the inside however - the work of the devil, to be avoided at all costs, even dehydration.

TigerJoy · 09/02/2024 00:17

I actually think blue is a great foil to most foods which tend to the brown.

I have a gorgeous set of white plates with blue splodges across from Royal Doulton.

I think a pattern is a good way of bringing a little joy into your life.

Those are rather lovely.

I’m still very happy with my wedding china - plain white with a blue and gold border.

I wasn’t so happy to find DH used to like whizzing his cereal bowl up and down the breakfast bar in my absence.

Sgtmajormummy · 09/02/2024 00:39

In the 90s housekeeping magazines advised spending good money on plates in daily use and to get cheaper white serving dishes that came out less often.
But why???
My serving dishes are Pyrex. So practical and they go with everything.

I have the same Villeroy & Boch shape in white and coloured versions.
Plus red transferware (Spode Pink Tower and miscellaneous) for the kitchen.
Not fond of light blue plates.
