Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

Have never heard it called Pancake Tuesday. Pancake day is fine-I like pancakes and am not religious.

I didn't realise til now that the UK didn't call it Pancake Tuesday!

couiza · 07/02/2024 16:57

But it is ALWAYS on a Tuesday!!

So people who this is important to (religion) can call it Shrove Tuesday.

I'm an atheist, so it's pancake day in our house.

bakedpotatoforlunch · 07/02/2024 16:58

Side (but related) question here. Why does my first pancake never work? 🤔

Yes I don’t see the requirement to use the religious term

We never say Pancake Tuesday though it’s Pancake Day here

Deadringer · 07/02/2024 17:02

Pancake Tuesday followed by Ash Wednesday, it's an irish thing.

It's the rules that you throw away the first one! ( or your pan isn't hot enough)

LlynTegid · 07/02/2024 17:03

I call it Shrove Tuesday or sometimes refer to it as Mardi Gras if referring to carnivals that are held in several countries (that in Binche in Belgium is probably where the word binge comes from).

Never heard it called Pancake Tuesday, just pancake day.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/02/2024 17:04

I have never heard it called Pancake Day but I'm Irish so obviously different traditions. It has been Pancake Tuesday for as long as I can remember and I'm coming up on 60 so that's neither today nor yesterday.

It was only ever referred to as Shrove Tuesday in Christian Doctrine classes in school or at mass and even then the teachers would call it Pancake Tuesday otherwise.

Goldenboysmum · 07/02/2024 17:04

I've always called it pancake Tuesday, I'm Scottish, everyone i know calls it pancake Tuesday.

My late dad, when asked when something would get done, would always reply, next pancake Tuesday 😅

Verv · 07/02/2024 17:04

I call it pancake day.
Delighted that this thread has alerted me to it being next week.

neverbeenskiing · 07/02/2024 17:04

We're not religious, but we do like pancakes so it's Pancake Day in this house. You can call it whatever you like.

scrambledeggsandbeans · 07/02/2024 17:05

@KreedKafer nope I just see it as commercial crap every day is mother's day HTH

I know! Pancake Day just sounds so weird to me, particularly as it is always a Tuesday.

Must be a Q-Celtic thing then as it's the same in Ireland.

What's it called in Wales?

I'm surprised i didn't know. I spend ages on here like! That's my 'learn one new thing every day' i suppose!

Moveoverdarlin · 07/02/2024 17:09

Never heard ANYONE call it Pancake Tuesday.

Shrove Tuesday or pancake day is what people call it.

I am so glad you posted that ! I thought I was a weird outlier.

Also Scottish and we always called it Pancake Tuesday, and my mum made lovely little Scottish pancakes , which we ate as fast as she could drop them.

Despite an extensive church going childhood, I never understood why it was a thing, but the pp explanation of using things up before Lent makes sense. ( We were Episcopalians so not entirely committed to confession and fasting)

SoupDragon · 07/02/2024 17:09

To me it is Pancake Day. A day to celebrate pancakes.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/02/2024 17:10

KreedKafer · 07/02/2024 16:47

I bet the OP also throws a strop about saying 'Mother's Day' instead of 'Mothering Sunday' and calls Boxing Day 'St Stephen's Day'.

It's Stephen's Day in Ireland. No St. We're very familiar with the saints here so we are.

Desecratedcoconut · 07/02/2024 17:12

Meh, pretty sure I've always called it Pancake Tuesday. And I like Halloween and Mother's Day too. Easter is okay, fish and chip Friday - even better. 😋

Stephenseseses Day 😂

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 07/02/2024 17:13

We always have pancakes on a Sunday for breakfast and that is our pancake day.

I'm in a dither now what to call next Tuesday? We're not religious. So is it "an extra pancake day that's not on a Sunday?"

Pan not hot enough? The first one is for practice anyway 🙂

saladcruncher · 07/02/2024 16:51

This thread is literally loads of us being introduced to this new 'Pancake Tuesday'

I agree OP, Pancake day or Shrove Tuesday are fine, but not Pancake Tuesday

Nope. Pancake Tuesday or, if you're discussing religion, Shrove Tuesday, but never Pancake Day. It's not as if the day changes. It's always a Tuesday.
